Whose Still Playing?

BissrokBissrok Member Posts: 1,002

Obviously, there's some people still playing. Otherwise, they would have shut the game down by now. But I can't imagine anyone actually playing this. Fans wouldn't want to give money to people who ruined their game. So, I was just wondering whose still playing and, more importantly, why? Is it all just people who got the free trial, played a couple minutes and foolishly assumed there was more content in the full game? Vets with no where else to turn?

This is a loaded question and you will no doubt take offense at whatever I answer, but I'm going to go on the record. I still play it and I've been with the game on and off since launch, and a permanent fixture since SWG was added to the Station Pass. I also play Everquest 2, and occasionally MxO and the first EQ. I don't like all of the games all of the time, but the Station Pass allows me to pop into games when big patches hit, special events, and stuff like that without having to constantly weigh the cost versus my curiosity. I bounce between MMORPGs I have active subscriptions to on a monthly basis. Last month was Guild Wars. Starting tomorrow, I'm going back to EQ2 to start some alts, and I'll hit SWG when Pub27 hits. Then perhaps EQ2 again if the expansion doesn't suck for mid-leveled characters.

As you can see, I don't live or die based on the success of a single MMORPG. If SWG disappeared tomorrow, I'd still have plenty to play. That being said, SWG is still my favorite MMORPG, due primarily to the setting, space, and frankly, familiarity - as in lack there of. SWG constantly changes, so there's always a reason to return to the game, so I actually play it more than anything else out there. Plus, Ithorians in assault armor kick ass.

I like the NGE. I did the test center thing, which was an exercise in frustration (if you got stuck at the ramp with C3P0 bitching in your ear, you know what I'm talking about). Though there was a lot to get used to and the combat felt weird, I loved the new station and pushed through it. Eventually, I became more comfortable with the new system, and when it hit live, I dropped my character down to level 1 (keeping possessions and space xp) and essentially started over. The newbie missions aren't bad and provided direction and addiction which were rare for SWG.

There were many bugs, and the lag at first was absolutely terrible, but these got fixed fairly quickly (especially by SWG team standards). There are still some outstanding bugs concerning space and whatnot, but according to dev posts in the forums, these will be corrected in pub 27, so I'm thrilled. I've honestly never seen the SWG team work this hard and they've been fixing things faster than I've ever seen them. They've even pushed back pub27 so that they could do more testing and bug fixes before sending it even to test. People say that doing stuff like offering JtL for free or second character slots are backpeddling, but the fact is, we got JtL for free and second character slots. If the terrible backlash was what it took for the SWG team to get off their ass, then that's exactly what they did.

I find most of the anti-NGE forum bitches to be little more than attention whores stuck in an endless feedback cycle of encouraging each other to be bigger and bigger jerks. One person says the NGE suck and SOE sucks and everything sucks, so the next guys says NGE REALLY SUCKS and SOE SUCKS BALLS, and so on. It just builds up and up, and now, months later, the public opinion of SWG, the team, and SOE is WAY out of line with the reality of it all. There were valid complaints against the NGE, but many of them have been perverted into sick vendettas as they've been left to fester in angry forum communities.

The NGE has problems, but MY current major complaints will be addressed in pub27. I wish that they'd put pub27 out quicker, or get that producer's letter out yesterday, but I can't complain about the content or direction of the publish. When it hits test, we'll see if I can complain about the quality, but until then, I'm obstaining from speculation. The NGE is not a completed game, and it is very different from what's there, but I enjoy playing it a great deal, and with a Commando main and a spy alt, pub27 affects me completely. Were I a trader or a entertainer, maybe not so much, but I'm not and I'm not going to adopt someone else's righteous indignation over something which doesn't affect me (I don't care that creature handler is gone either).

There's still quiet a bit of variety in the game (nothing else has two significantly different major game systems like ground and space), it's still Star Wars, the team demonstratably isn't slacking off, and I don't disagree with the direction of the NGE. In short, most of my complaints are in the process of being addressed, and while I could choose to believe that to be a lie, I have been plenty happy with the increased communication and hotfixes made to the game since the NGE. I wish they'd work faster, but that's more my fancy than a requirement. I know how slow development can be.

You know I haven't seen so much emphasis on fixes being in a single publish since the combat upgrade.

And that was worked on for well over 6 months.

I can't get over the number of veteran player that actually like the NGE better than pre NGE. It boggles my mind. I sadly, and reluctantly hit the "cancel" button shortly before Christmas. It was like breaking up with a long time girlfriend. Not an easy task by any means. You just want to hold on to the relationship, even though you know it's going nowhere fast. I went back to my active EQ account, and I'd cancel that too if I hadn't invested so much gameplay into it, and SOE hasn't royally screwed it beyond logic and reason yet, so I guess I'll wait till they eventually ruin that also.

I decided to try The Matrix Online, but when I found out it was SOE, I changed my mind fast. I won't buy any SOE game again for the duration of my life.

I went even further than simply cancelling. I gave away everything I had accumulated on every character on the 4 servers I played on then deleted each character before cancelling. I did the same thing in EQ. That was hard. When I played that, I was in (the best at the time) full Kael armor/epic etc for my shaman. All the lvl 65 spells etc etc.

But, much as it pained me to walk away from two games I loved so much and introduced me to friends I still talk to even now, (6 years later for EQ), I did it knowing that it was for the better. The company that runs these games is out to make money, just like any other company. It's the manner in which they do it that decided my course in both. When the needs of the people that pay your salary (so to speak) are no longer important to taht company and they are willing to sacrifice an established player base, it's time to walk away from said company and find another one.

SWG will always have a special place for me as the mmorpg that was the most fun and relaxing for me. I was able to get away from daily stress for awhile and let my imagination run wild. Sadly, one company's vision, or lack thereof, killed that avenue.

Well i built a guild hall shrine to one of my chars before killing him off. As an AS, his basement is full of as many newly made suits of armor as i could fit in there.(at the time selling for 150k a suit, wonder what they're worth now?) And gave my other char access rights, before he became padawan and rode of onto the distance on his Barc with his spiffy new outfit.

Can't see coming back unless professions are sorted, mine being AS and swords, the other Mcm Mbh and nov pist.

The only people playing "Star Wars Battlefront Beta for the Mentally Challenged" are DEVS, or maybe it's a new torture method they use on prisoners in Guantanamo bay?

"Tell me what you know, or You'll be forced to play a new char on Star Wars Galaxies!"

"You scum! My training has prepared me for this though!"

"Very well, did I mention you'll be a trader?"

"Nooooooooooooo, you bastards how did you know my weakness?"

"Spill your guts now and you won't have to grind entertainer!"

    whimpers

    "ok"

I think you just described SOE in a single word, congratulations!

Wait a second... You don't play SWG, but you came to the forum for it, then clicked on the topic asking "Whose Still Playing" and then used dictionary quotes to flame the people that are on topic?

Hmm... Deep. I guessing you're also 15, but you're much, much smarter than these other 15 year olds.

Anyway, my point is, cancel your subscription if you really want to get this game shut down. I know almost everyone here has canceled their subscription already and even if no one subscribes they'll still think they were doing the right thing (and that we asked for it). But... ah hell, I'm not much for thinking. It'll piss 'em off and no one will want there game associated with them. And that's what they get for f**king up my favorite MMO.

Not me. 3 accounts canceled, not coming back until the NGE is gone, or negated.

Quick math question for ya ! :how old does that make me ? What year was i born ? Tell me if im moving to fast for you I"ll slow down .

I am at a transition myself. Because I did cancel my account after giving the NewGameEnhancement a try, I was giving it all its worth. But I just couldnt stomach it, after being whats done. But now I am partially wanting to go back to Star Wars Galaxies because it was the first MMORPG I jumped into, and was there Pre-Combat Upgrade. I really really am considering going back even maybe before the Publish 27. Even though it means going into the NewGameEnhancement, which in all intent and purpose had some good idea's but they destroyed the profession to much, and I couldnt even if I wanted be back at my Teras Kasai ways to not feel so guilty about being Jedi as its the only melee class as I am not one for gunner. *shrugs* Just never floated with me.

As I said, I am very tempted but on the other hand not wanting to because of whats been done to the "Star Warsy" experiance I was already happily enjoying and actualy spent many hours to play on gaining Master Teras Kasi. (Man all those buffs! @_@ )

the game is dead to me, its not the same game i started playing, the nge swg is for a diff cast of players and does not fit well with the older players, some people will love the nge, esp people whom never played the origonal, so be it, but the origonal was by far best as it was player driven, it seems now it is all quest rewards and the crafter is mostly limited to and cant keep up with looted weps and ect.., i remeber selling firesprays for decent credits or cool stuff,, then bang came the grevious ship reward and that killed any value and rarity that players worked for to obtain those rare player made items. I can go on and on and complain more and more, but im not gonna , oh well rip swg, welcome in the nge, bows head sais prayer,
