The latest Destiny patch has gone live that addresses some of the concerns players have expressed about how Engrams are earned. The team is making strikes more rewarding and predictable. This is the latest in a series of weekly patches to address the most common concerns and issues within the recently released title.

I must say it's indeed a nice patch.
"Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas."
The problem is, that you are completely focussed on the grind. And then it really does become a grind.
It's the same with every single MMO on the market. If you solely focus on grinding, it becomes a grind.
I just log in to play and have fun.
Every time I log in, I just grab some bounties (the ones I like), do some patrols, grab some Events along the way and if I am in the mood, I do a Heroic Strike (maybe even two).
After a couple days doing this, I have easily acquired 65 Vanguard Marks to purchase a piece of Level 20 Legendary gear from my Vanguard Vendor.
You only need to be Rank 2 with Vanguard to buy the gear. I was already halfway towards Rank 2 by the time I hit Level 20. So the remaining just came by itself in a few days playing.
But Yeah, a lot of people seem to have rushed through the Story missions, without doing anything else in between. Then you end up being close to level 20 with zero Vanguard reputation and not a single Vanguard mark.
I have over 40 hours in and still haven't completed the story missions. Still have one side mission and the end mission left. Also still haven't done all the Strikes.
I just did a lot of exploring in between, patrols, tons of Public Events (love them), finding chests, harvest materials to stock up (as I knew I would need lots of them at Level 20).
By playing like this, I am now level 26 With full Legendary armor, without the game ever feeling like a grind.
And now with the last patch, gear is basically thrown at you. Especially doing the Heroic Strike playlist.
PS. Regarding Queen event. You don't need a single piece of legendary gear to Reach Level 24. I managed to do this with a full set of Level 20 blue gear fully upgraded.Beyond 24, then you really need legendary.
Sorry, but Destiny is much less grindy than the majority of MMOs. For people to be posting on MMORPG.com that Destiny is grindy is actually pretty ironic.
I probably have 40-50 horus into the game and I'm level 27 with a full set of Legendary gear.
Queen's Wrath was an event that, in my opinion, was only released to answer the call for more steady gear progrssion. So it bridged the gap between back then and now. With the 1.0.2 changes, it should be pretty simple to get the gear you need to progress.
Also, since you won't be let down, anymore, when you get a Legendary Engram, and since they've increased drop rates in strikes, etc., this progression ramp should taper off.

Destiny is nothing but a gear grind after you finish the story progression. A story, I might add, that's incredibly short and not very engaging.
Not sure where you're seeing folks here claiming it's a grind is ironic. I think most MMOs are grindy, too. But Destiny, beyond the aforementioned half-assed story, is nothing but grind. It doesn't even attempt to disguise it (save for the limited events you mentioned).
If you enjoy the grind because you like shooters and the sci-fi, good for you. But attempting to claim it's anything but, or that it's anything but expected for folks here to claim it's an obvious gear grind, is looking at the game through the best of rose-tinted glasses.
