Did Mike Donatelli want to strangle Stephan Frost ... Wildstar Nexus Report

BukkerzBukkerz Member UncommonPosts: 177

I watched the Nexus report a couple of days ago and the tension brimming within Mike Donatelli was incredibly obvious to witness. .. here is the link ..

I really felt for the guy and his honesty was great to witness which actually makes me believe that he will drag the team kicking and screaming and slap them into reality until the Wildstar flower blossoms. I could also sense that Stephan Frosts smugness towards his pre- determined departure only fueled the fire further and reading between the lines you could sense that Mike would have liked nothing more than to strangle him .. thoroughly .. with an occasional slap.

The tension really smoldered when Stephan assuming Tony Ray also thought Mike to be a buffoon along with himself incorrectly brought Tony to his bossom by calling him 'Homey' .. oop's .. the conversation and comeradery seemed to switch and then Mr Donatelli immediately started to command the high ground.

Bearing in mind that Mr Frost is leaving for an offer he can't refuse .. his words .. all I can say is that with all of the sudden departures maybe the job 'will' start to get done. I am surprised that Mike has any teeth left with all the grinding. It was very refreshing to witness real life working frustrations and not the ridiculous veil of BS that we are usually fed.

I personally have far 'more' faith in Wildstar becoming the game it set out to become. Maybe not in the next 6 months but by this time next year and bearing in mind there are no more AAA titles on the horizon ... and I also mean Everquest Next which is 100 years away .... the game may well become a swan.

It seems to be a thing now for people to bail out when a game launch doesn't go so well. To me it doesn't prove they weren't the ones to blame. If anything it's kind of a big risk. If the game turns it around after they leave and becomes something better than it was....who should fans point the fingers at ?

SWTOR sure got a lot better once Daniel Erikson left.

I agree entirely. It was not hard to to that Mike Donatelli was clearly frustrated to the point of annoyance that clearly part of the development team were not doing their jobs. It seemed to be the constant battle of releasing clean un-buggy content that has slowed everything up. Also it becomes clear that the decision to recreate vanilla WOW at least from the Raid perspective was internally a contested one.

I think the game plays exceptionally well and if anything they have put too much for you to do ... but the efforts and small touches are huge and they do deserve more recognition that they have received. The negative opinions towards all new MMO's does seem to be incredibly brutal of late ... it's almost fashionable to be negative.

Of course we will never know but by the look of the problems they now have the game was clearly released too early...it would be interesting to find out whether or not the powers that be put their foot down. I certainly am not an expert but I did think that June was a ridiculous time to launch and the game seems to have gone a very similar way to that of The Secret World which also was released as everybody started to enjoy the summer.

..This lack of common sense frustrates the hell out of me frankly. All that time spent and then slam ... stupid.

I have to disagree with your assessment that June was a bad time to launch. In my opinion, Carbine's timing couldn't have been better. ESO was on the wane, ArcheAge wasn't a thing yet, and WoW wasn't expected to launch until the fall. Carbine had the entire MMO sphere talking about its game, and a sizeable number of players trying it out. Hitting that June launch date may have meant making some compromises, but I hardly think those compromises are responsible for WildStar's declining popularity.

I do agree with you though that there was probably a lot of internal discussion/disagreement about the direction the game should take and continues to take. It's all too possible that the actors who pushed for the product we have now are starting to exit the stage.

Ah.. but your looking at it from the point of view of an empty gap. I am looking at it from the point of view of the human psyche and wallet.

June from a Film or Movie release point of view or game release must be one of the worst. Sometimes it is better to compete with others at a time when a higher population of people are actually looking than in an exceptionally quiet period where the sunshine utterly obliterates those dark long evenings etc etc.

Christ I'm old and do not go out that much (I have a huge fridge) and even I know that June was a nonsense .. if your in your late teens or early twenty's like my son's ... schools out for summer ... and MMO's have a high intellectual demograph...the maths is obvious ...unless your an over paid salesman who has climbed the ladder of authority and sit on an NC Soft pedestal wearing a Mortarboard that is.
