Stumped AA or ESO

DonY81DonY81 Member UncommonPosts: 398

I like both games and am a point now where sinking my teeth into an MMO is great for this time of year. The problem I have is that ESO is really questing heavy and ill be honest it kind of makes my brain glaze over a little these days. On the flips side I really like AA with housing, crafting etc.

Another problem is I play casually and run my own business so most of my time is devoted to work but I do want a good ol mmo to play in my spare time.

So my questions are:

Can AA be played casually and possibly as a single player game a bit like ESO gets touted as.

Any other help / feedback would be appreciated.

I would read the Reddit and official forums for both and then decide.

Well, that would have been incorrect as well, should be moved over to Looking for Game actually.

Better decide on what you like.... deep story telling, 3 faction PVP, heavy on the solo experience and a long quest grind, go ESO.

More into crafting, more open world 2 faction PVP, with strong dependence on your guild mates to really accomplish great things, go with AA.

They really play quite different from each other, and for some players have almost mutually exclusionary features.

I'm so sick of tab target lifeless combat so I prefer ESO over AA.

Depends on what you want or expect from a game.

AA - pay to win or at least enjoy the game while progressing at a normal pace.

AA - housing is fubar - all land has been claimed already due to an exploit of some sort. Only from what i read -  kind of pointless

AA - Open world PvP and ganking by justice system or not people will eventually have 2 accounts - gank with 1 loot with the other or other things. Point for me here is hard to move along if you are constantly in a war footing / attack setting. this is my opinion though

I was really looking forward to AA about 6-8 months ago, then the pay to win cash house comes out and this housing stuff - im staying away and enjoying ESO. Maybe ill look at it 6 months down the road.

Just installing ESO. Im really casual and because of that even if the game doesn't have a heap of content I probably wont keep up anyway and by the time I do get further on possibly more will happen with pvp etc and im hoping the game will mature a bit.

ArcheAge. Played both, I was bored of ESO after 3 weeks, but I'm not even close to that point in AA yet.

ESO is good on paper only. The combat seems very deep and fun but once you understand the mechanics after a while you realise its redundant and not that fun after all.

class balance in 1vs1 is bad. For exempe 2 good players can fight each other for 3-4 minutes and end up giving up because they cant kill each other.

Dk being able to chain root and go behind your back out of your line of sight and there are no cc immunity or diminishing returns.

sorcerers blinking all across the map.  Everyone using staves in end game  pve because stamina builds are a joke. The holy trinity is also a joke in the game.

    --------

Archeage combat on the other hand is very well done the sandbox aspect and the open world makes you feel like you are playing a real MMO all over again.  Deep amd fun pvp crafting system. The quests are straigt foward and dont feel like a chore and you only have to do so many of them ... If you want you can grind xp with mobs or many other ways.

on the other hand the game is not very well scripted and most spells are client sided making the game EXTREMELY easy to hack and exploit. The boters are cheaters are ALL OVER THE PLACE. There is also no more land to get a house AND the cheaters are getting the one that free up as soon as they do. No exagerating there. Also the game has its fair share of bugs and graphical bugs and latency problems and connectivity and queue time.

I personally went back to guild wars 2 and I am very happy with all the changes they made. The game doesnt feel old and its probably the best choice for casual and semi casual gamers.

Well, ESO combat might not be the best but AA's combat certainly feels worse. In AA there are tons of CC which often result in whoever throws the first CC wins. So 1v1 is not the best there either.

@OP, I played both games and liked both games for a time. And I don't think that, as some people in this thread argue, that people who like one will not like the other and that some how if you enjoy a good storytelling game then you are definitely not going to like sandbox features.

Having said that, I think ESO is better. The actual gameplay in ESO was more fun to me. Combat is more fun. Character customisation seems better done to me and the stories they tell are quite interesting. The game looks significantly better than Archeage and the world's atmosphere and lore is more intriguing, probably because I love the TES series.

And don't worry, you will not run out of content in ESO any time soon if you play casually. It has loads of content. I think more so than Archeage. The zones in Archeage are not as densely packed with content and if you are not into long ass grinding when it comes to crafting and farming, you will probably not like it after 3-4 weeks of playtime.

The leveling pace in ESO is quite slow, so as "real" casual player you have several months of content to look forward to before you reach the normal Level cap.

I played both games pretty much from release. From my personal perspective, I did enjoy the leveling in ESO 100 times more than in AA. I got to V1 in ESO and level 35 in AA before I quit.

I quit ESO because the group system did not work properly, which meant that I had a hard time finding groups to gear up.

I quit AA because of the queue time and I could not be arshed to level any more. It is the same quests over and over, just different environment.

In the long run I think ESO is a better choice. It has the potential to be great if they fix a couple mechanics and keep fixing the shear amount of bugs and wrong tooltips.
