Want something hard and fun

TsetsuTsetsu Member Posts: 9

I have been desperatly playing every mmo I can trying to find a game with a specific type of game play. I want to try to reach out here and see if anyone knows of a game that fits what I am looking for.

I am going to describe what I want in priority order to help define what I really want and what I would like to have

Overall best descriptions of what I would like

I would like to find a game where the end game is not centered around getting gear but is instead centered around a story or some sort of progression that is hard and you get gear to get through that story. I use to play FF11 back a long time ago and I always really enjoyed the concept of how it worked although I think the implementation needed a lot of work. Each expansion had this hard storyline to get through it and took a good amount of work to finish the expansion’s story. One of the main reasons people did Sky, Sea, etc.. was to help get through this storyline with friends and get the pieces required to for example beat the shadow warriors, superman fight, or promethea. I would like to find something like this where the gear is only used to get through the main story and the purpose of the game is not just to get gear.

Really like to have or not have

  • Hard boss fights that focus on strategy and not mashing 1 and 2
  • NO gear to get gear end game. I don’t mind gear upgrades but I don’t want to get gear just to get more gear.
  • WoW or higher level graphics (not asking for much here)
  • Story
  • No repeating a dungeon 100s of times that ends up more a chore than a game
  • No token grinding, I don’t mind getting tokens for rewards but I hate running simple dungeons 100s of times just to get gear.
  • NO pay to win

Nice to have

  • Class customization, interchanged skill, cross class, cross purpose classing
  • Decent crafting system, something useful is nice here as well and not just something that becomes useless other than 1 item at top level.
  • The classic tank healer dps type system (ie not guildwars 2)
  • Housing system / guild castle system
  • skill based targeting system, something where you have to aim or use an ability to attack (smite type combat would nice in an MMO)
  • swords, maces, magic, etc.. world , not a big fan of space or modern but if everything else is right I can ignore this

Bonus but not needed

  • drop in drop out system
  • PvP (I don’t need this, I can just play a moba for PVP)
  • player integrated cutscenes
  • fun things like instruments and minigames
  • Exploration : I remember in FF11 exploring areas that very few people ever made it too with things like invis and sneak. This was fun and highly risky

Here is a list of the MMOs I have played and some of my thoughts on them  to get a better handle on what I like and don't like

There's not a single game with everything you like. You always have to bear with something bad.. You just have to take all the weights and pick a game.

And by the time you decide there's already 10 more games to try out.. oh well

So you want a game where the developers put in a huge amount of effort into making highly challenging PvE fights but then don't turn around and reward those fights with gear....  only thing that comes to mind is gw2 but you don't like other aspects of that game.

    Something I might have miscommunicated

    1. I have a list of what I like not everything the game must have. The thing is finding the closest fit. I have searched for this and nothing so far.

    2. I don't mind getting the gear rewards but I don't want to get gear just to get more gear. I want a reason to get gear. For example in FF11 you got gear to complete the story from the expansion not just so you can get the next piece. In FF11 I remember going years before there where any real upgrades to armor and I would still use 90% of what I had before when they did upgrade. A lot of the big fights got gear but for example in Chain of Promethia you did the entire story line and got an earing that was really nice at the end. I just don't want the WoW get a piece of gear so we can go to the next dungeon to get the next piece of gear with no real reason or story.

Maybe to sum it up in a nicer way would be a game focused around hard boss fights with a story instead of repetitive dungeon grinding for gear.

Ahh, so you want a FFXI replacement, no luck, they don't make them like that anymore.

"Hard and fun" . I think you are talking non-gaming and real life at this point.

    @op...

This is why i am not playing a single rpg right now,it is because no game has come close to what FFXI did. Some have sparkled a tad bit close but only remotely close.

EVERY and i mean EVERY single game is about practically ignoring the main game to rush to end game which then becomes nothing more than a gear grind, even Square has gone that route with FFXIV.

NOBODY was more creative than Square over the years but now EVERYONE developer still looks at Blizzard like there is some magical formula.

There is no magical formula but we still see  every developer copying the exact same design.I think eventually all bad ideas make a turn around to where it all started,so one day we will see a return to creative thinking.

There are a few arguments to triple A but imo all these games are AA at best and just rely on marketing/advertising and timing.

OP the best we can do is patiently wait and wait and wait until there  is some classy new producer who is given a free realm with a developers money to be creative.

As to story, what devs are doing now is telling you their content involves the story, there is no real LORE or background to the whole story it is just a mixed bag of content called a story.Of course it helped FFXI being that their lore goes way back and using known mythology also helps a ton.Devs now a days are using stupid gimmicks like "season 1" or season 2" it is like  they have been watching too much TV.

So to distill it down what you want is a game where seeing where the story leads next is the motivation for participating in PvE rather than to get more gear?  The only game that has done that for me is SWTOR though that is a very specific setting and not to everyone's taste.  Also the boss fights aren't that hard unless you are doing hard mode raids in which case you've already seen the story in... story mode.

To be honest I can't think of any remotely recent game that gates story with hard fights, usually all the story fights are very easy to allow everyone access to the story.

You need to think 3 dimensional instead of 2.  MMO's aren't what they used to be.  If you want a fun hard game to play with, play Divinity : Original Sin, it's your best bet.    Over 80 hours of game play in about 2 weeks, still far from finishing and unlocking all the achievements.   It's like Skyrim + Diablo + HOMM + FF mashed together for the dream RPG, RPG fanatics have been craving for years.  And with DLC's, the game will keep you busy for months, plus you can play online. :D

If the only option is single player games I will just wait and play my mobas till something comes out.

    Kyleran

I was really hoping FF14 was the replacement for FF11 but seems they just went the way of popular development.

    flizzer

    Been there done that

    Wizardry

This all the same game issue is becoming ridiculous. One of the major issues with the all the same game model is no one really has a reason to play another game. I miss the days when the story was the main drivers in RPGs but I think the occupation of non-typical people now playing games they got rid of the geeky story and lore and accounted for the lowest common player. I am going to keep waiting and not going to give my money to any more of these cookie cutter MMOs. I am going to try out EQ next because it at least shows something unique but I don’t see anything else in the future that looks all that great.

    reeereee

Yep basically I wanted a game that is story driven. I don’t know why the story got lost from the games. I would guess people saw WoW do it without a story driven game and the others followed suite.

    LeGrosGamerV2

when I posted this I was not limited to MMORPG but I did want online games and typically MMO covers that realm. I have looked at divinity Original Sin a few times and have not tried it yet, I will give it a shot this time.

    hcoelho

Have not tried that I will look it up

Well, it seems you have completely missed Firefall.

    1. Very fun, huge boss fights. You will WANT to repeats these dungeons because you will think they are awesome!!!

    2. Gorgeous graphics if you like anime style, but character portraits do like kinda silly. I don't care since I play first-person.

    3. Main story campaign, haven't finished so I don't know if it's good. Also there are a lot of side quests you get from cities and community events similar to Rift. You will always stop for 2 even 3 events on your way to your destination. Players can create such events by thumping (mining) and attract other players like magnets. The rewards from events are equally balanced.

    4. The crafting system is very complex and meaningful. The quest rewards, from what i've seen, are crafting materials and the equipment received (if you receive any) is crappy, good for salvaging to get components. Best way to get gear is by crafting. Sometimes it can become frustrating, because you advance very quickly in this game and you feel obligated to update your equipment every 3-4 levels. It's insane and quite expensive to do so.

    5. The holy trinity tank/healer/dps is there.

    6. There is no cross class like in Runes of Magic, but there are hybrid classes. There are 4 main classes and each of them have 2 more advanced ones. For example Biotech (main class) is pure healer, Recluse (biotech advanced) is AoE/DPS and Mosquito (biotech advanced) is Healer/DPS. I haven't played other classes, but they follow the same pattern. Important to keep in mind is that you can only create one character and you can use it to unlock every class in the game. Every time you reach max level with one class (40) you receive enough points to unlock another. Don't worry, as I said you advance extremely quickly in this game.

    7. I must warn you this is not you average tab-targeting MMORPG. This is a first/third-person shooter, sci-fi...MMO of course, but I'm sure you can ignore this ;).

    8. Exploration at it's finest

First game that came on my mind while reading your post was LotRO, then Path of Exile, but it seems you already consumed those. I recommend you to return to these fine games because they do fulfill most of your requirements. I do hope you will also enjoy Firefall. Have fun!

I wanted to update this thread with some info since I posted it. I spent a lot of time going through what is available now and coming up and here are some things I found interesting

Things I have tried and have potential

    • Archeblade , this seems really fun, nice combat style and challenging skill based pvp
    • magicka wizard wars , very fun game, takes high skill to play
    • ZMR, still testing but seems really fun, some of the battles can get hard.
Things I am looking forward to coming out that could have potential
    • Skyforge , This looks awesome but still waiting for more details
    • Bless , great reviews but might never make it to the states
    • Black desert , This is making it to states and looks awesome.
    • Blade and Soul , Might never make it to states but looks like a really cool combat system

I think part of my problem with some games is I don't have a group of people to play with and everything is more enjoyable with friends. I made a post on this forum looking for some others to play with that might also make this more enjoyable as well.

Oddly enough that is actually my friend's petition which was created to try and make that happen. Sadly we kindof gave up promoting it for 2 reasons (1. people were trolling it. 2. The people who DID want it refused to support it because they had already decided it was an impossible task (which they couldn't know without the developer comment I made the petition in order to attempt to draw out)) so sadly that dream is all but dead with the devs refusing to comment on the matter one way or the other.

On topic, from the OP I have to side with a lot of the posts in here saying that something like what you were originally asking for doesn't really exist outside of what ffxi was (and no longer is). Lucky for you, you seem to also like some of the other things out there like your mobas or what have you. Im pretty much left with no mmos or online games I like playing because the style of mmo I enjoy the most has been abandoned.

Your concentration on getting gear just to get gear is the problem. It sounds like you need a game with combat that you enjoy. If you had to run a dungeon a hundred times, it wouldn't be a problem if the dungeon was a fun experience each time.

Games developed with a long lifespan in mind have to hook you with something. The most popular, easy, and familiar way is with gear. The point is for you to play through the game as you want, and acquire items along the way that EVENTUALLY add up to enough to go do some other fun activity.

Honestly, if you enjoy Halo combat mechanics, play Destiny. It has a gear grind, but you don't feel it if you're just having fun getting headshots, and it still feels like an MMO to me.

too bad people decided to waste the time to troll this instead of letting the people serious about it just have fun. The toxic community sometimes is depressing.

Yea i am lucky to have mobas or really my gaming rig would be going to waste right now with the poor performance in the MMO realm. I hope there is a company that realized some day there is a demand games like I described in my OP.

I wanted to add some updates to this thread. I recently picked up DCUO and am having fun with it. It is a completely different feel than what I have played so far and the combat is entertaining. I like that there is a rich lore in the super hero world and reading comic books as a kid allows me to enjoy some of the lore without it having to be long and drawn out. It is action style combat with an interesting take on class building. I also like that everyone looks different in the game and there isn't a town of people wearing the same armor as you.

    Wizardry Online.

Unfortunately it's shut down now by SOE.  It's the closest thing I have found to classic FFXI (I searched for a long long time too).  The challenge and difficulty and emphasis on teamwork was very strong in that game.  The permadeath was a minor and ignorable aspect, and so was the PvP pretty much.

It had the potential to be the ultimate PvE game.  Unfortunately, it never got a chance.

I see threads like this all the time (I've even posted a few of them myself).  I've conceded that everyone else is correct: It doesn't exist.  It never will.  Wizardry Online was the closest we got to filling that void, and nobody liked it.

The audience just wants EASYSOLO, and CONVENIENCE.  It's why I haven't touched another MMO since.  They're no longer Massively Multiplayer Games, they're just theme-parks.  No adventure, no risk, no sense of danger... just Disney Land Meets Lord of the Rings or (star wars in swtor's case, except even Disney Land's star wars ride was better than that).  :

Sorry dude.  :(  I really wish the world was different.  There is no game dev or company out there that cares what we want.
