But after reading about the amount of botters, gold sellers, hackers and griefers I decided to pass. The griefers I can deal with, the botters & hackers I cant. Especially since trion is limited by XL games on what they can actually do.
Try it out, it's free after all. Don't spend any money on it until you have got to at least 15-20. By that time you will get a feel for the game and whether you like it enough it to subscribe. I wouldn't pay for more than 1 month sub if I were you.

Agree with previous posters, try it now for free. But know it's not really the full game until Auroria opens up. It's a whole continent that is not released. Also, there are tons of bots and hackers. I would save spending money for a month or so for the auroria release and see if xl/trion gets the bots and hackers under control.

Well they have shipped their anti bot systems from Rift or something similar to XL and they are working to implement it. Hope it helps.

Like others have said, dont buy Patron right off the start. Jump in as F2P and check things out. Right now land is mostly locked up but I am starting to see small plots open up and I imagine in a month or two getting land will be much easier as many of the one month subbers drop the game.
What is nice about the game is you can play it F2P and earn enough gold to buy Patron for free. Do some research on trade-packs, use public farms to grow your materials or look around for good hidden spots where you can drop some things down in the open world. Find a trade guild on your server that does runs across the ocean on a semi-weekly basis and you are set. Trade packs take 50 of one item and 20 of another (roughly) and if you have the time to walk slowly, you can make 19 gold for one trade run across islands. To put that in perspective, an APEX is selling currently around 50 gold and two of them will buy you patron status for a month. Four ocean trade runs plus selling extra mats on the AH can easily earn you patron status. Access to the AH is less than $5 in the shop.
By myself, no guild and not playing more than 20 hours a week, I earned 50 gold in 10 days and never touched the ocean. I just leveled through the missions and planted 10 items in the public farms when I could and did a few trade runs on my island. After that I decided to buy Patron and was lucky enough to buy a medium farmhouse plot for 90 gold. I'm having fun doing different things, right now my favorite is sailing with guildies doing inter-island trading and fighting off pirates.
I'm having more fun in this game than I have in any MMO since SWG.
"Sean (Murray) saying MP will be in the game is not remotely close to evidence that at the point of purchase people thought there was MP in the game." - SEANMCAD
This. Since its free, try it and within a few hours you will buy patron status.
Agreed.
I'm normally a slow leveler, and I'm also playing this game for the crafting and trading. I had the headstart but didn't actually start playing until a few days after release. I'm level 36 with a small farm, a farm wagon and a niche of the market that's making me some decent gold. The guild I'm in gets together for trade runs, crafting sessions, ship construction, raids and PVP. That means for someone like me that's not into raiding and only minimally into PVP, there is still plenty for me to do collaboratively with the guild, even at my level.
I look at free to play as an indefinitely trial, as the game is most enjoyable when subbed.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
Before you spend any money or do the download, I recommend reading the forums and the reddit for general information about the game and its fundamental mechanics. ArcheAge is a PvP game. If you don't like PvP, you can engage in strictly PvE activities but you will miss out on seeing much of the world. The other big things are:
Labor Points Labor points are a fundamental game mechanic designed to pace progression so that the economy is not unbalanced. All crafting activity consumes labor points, as well as opening coin purses dropped from mobs and delivering trade packs. Labor point regeneration happens through a passive tick while in game (and offline for patrons) and/or by consuming a "workmans compensation" potion that costs gold, credits or loyalty.
Housing As you will find in many posts, there is a significant housing shortage in AA and it is intended. If you care about housing and not having it is a game breaker for you, then do not proceed any farther. Same with farming, though there are workarounds for that.
Cost (Patron) If you cannot or will not spend any money on AA, then you need to know up front what your limitations are:
1) You cannot pay taxes, therefore you cannot place a house and you cannot place a farm. The Blue Salt questline will give you two farms for free, but you cannot place them.
2) Your labor points will be limited to 2000. Your in-game regen rate will be 5 points every 5 minutes and -0- offline. Some players find this too limiting to be enjoyable.

Goodluck in finding an mmo without it o/
I know there wont be any MMO free from botters, hackers & gold sellers. But the F2P MMOs seem to draw them like flies and have very little in ways to combat the abuses. Archeage being a prime example. One of the reasons I personally prefer sub based MMOs is that while the botters are there, they seem to be fewer and the company at least makes an effort to control the sheer amount of them.
Personally I started playing Mordor and forgot all about MMO's for a while. I played ArcheAge till I found out how limiting the farming system and other very rigid systems were. It's fun for a while but it got annoying very quickly.
As others have stated DO NOT START THIS GAME AS A PAYING PLAYER!
For one, the issue of the game content and the mechanics might not be to your tastes, but the most important reason is
THE GAME CRASHES AND LAGS!
I am not joking about this. Take a look at the forums and you will see the Support section has the 2nd highest number of threads with the Bug section in 3rd place. I've been playing for two weeks and I have spent more time reading up on fixes and tweaks than I have on classes and game mechanics. The population on the servers has started dropping and it's not just because of how crippling the labor point system is to free players, but a lot of paying players are dropping the game because the game crashes so much that they can't play. When I first started, the game ran smoothly, but then they did a patch two days in a row and the game started lagging and crashing. After this last patch, the game freezes within minutes of logging in. The crashing has been so bad that I haven't been able to play for days and the last time I logged in today I got the BSOD. The guild I'm in is losing players because of the same problem and two of our patron players are dropping their subscriptions until the game is fixed, which I wouldn't count on being anytime soon since the only response to the problem was for players to restart their routers.
If you still want to pay for a subscription or buy cash shop credits, be warned, the purchasing side of the game has also been causing problems. Players either can't buy sub/credit because of errors on the site or are managing to purchase patron status, but it's not taking affect in the game and the CS is taking days to respond to tickets.
I agree: Try AA as F2P till you're up to Lvl 20-25. What do you have to lose? It's a great way to "test drive" the game before considering to go sub.
For myself, I started playing AA F2P about a week ago and I'm having a blast. I'll probably end up subbing because I see so many things to do in the months ahead...and I'm totally hooked on hand gliding off tall mountains.
