SWG had it's issues for sure but no other MMO has matched what it done even after all these years since it was released. It had the best player housing and cities to date especially when you could decorate it however you liked and even set up shops in them.

The crafting was the best yet with better products made when the resources were of higher quality and using better equipment.

You could be any class you wanted with the huge class system it had which I know had a lot of balancing issues but it was still great fun and you didn't even have to be a combat class either as many took up crafting profs or just became entertainers.

With the JTL expansion you had space which was not on rails and with the Shipwright profession you could really make some truly awesome ship parts which made space pvp great fun too.

Another part of SWG I loved and have not experienced in any other MMO was it's PvP which would last hours upon hours which would take you all over the planet and then to the next while you took over enemy bases etc, fighting in their towns and cities which was so much fun.

Even with the bugs SWG had, the game was still fun until SOE ruined it but I would rather play it today than any other MMO today and a gaming dream come true would be SWG 2 and not that turd known as SWTOR which is a travesty.

Final Fantasy being bad wasn't a surprise.

A good Final Fantasy (or any J(rp)G for the matter) would be.

Vanguard did have some amazing features. It could have been a great game but it never recovered from a failed launch.

LOL yup, the moment I clicked that article and saw SWG on there I knew there'd be some rage heading this way.

The vast majority of people may have found it a flawed game, but those who liked it, REALLY liked it.

I think if SWG were released today .. with the right team and the right direction .. you may see something truly the best out there.

Something also to remember is that SWG was a sandbox ... not a theme park (which it became after NGE)

I think the potential of the game was never fully tapped and for that I blame SOE.

The reason SWG was a disappointment for so many wasn't necessarily the bugs.....and calling it a disapointment also doesn't necessarily mean it was a bad game. SWG was a dissapointment for so many, because so many hoped of playing a star wars MMO where they could live out their star wars fantasies....SWG at launch could barley have even been called a star wars game. Imagine mr star wars geek getting super excited to finally be a luke skywalker, darth vader, the emporer, or han solo....boots up SWG....and can be a crafter, moister farmer, beast master (beast master?????)....

Admittedly I did not even read past the SWG paragraph but considering that I see SWG as one of the greatest MMO's of all time I think that your views and opinions in this matter are greatly skewed.

Yeppers. $OE was the reason SWG ultimately failed. $OE was so busy working on the next "cash grab" (expansions, Jedi class), that it never bothered to address the problems/bugs in the core game. Even with the problems, SWG did extremely well given that the internet was not so easily available to gamers when it launched in 2003. $OE found it easier to revamp the game (CU) than fix it, then decided it would be more profitable to chase the WoW players with the NGE, but those players never materialized. All $OE accomplished was alienating the loyal players SWG had, especially with the NGE.

There is little doubt that SWG made the list to motivate discussion given there have been many more serious MMO disappointments/failures since WoW launched.  In fact, it would be harder to list five MMORPG's that have been truly successful since 2005 (without having to go F2P).image

The best aspect of Vanguard was the Sky, this beautyfull, volumetric clouded, lightened Sky.

No other MMOrpg i know has such a Sky and if you ask why the Sky is an urgent Feature its bcs it has the Task to enhance the mood of the game, the mood of the Player, break up the environmental/ambience monotony and that was among some nice idead the best part of Vanguard.

That is another Point why SWTOR sucks so bad, its allways static, never changing daytime and mood of ultimate monotony.

EVE online has a lot of great features, but ultimately I was disappointed in the bad ship designs that are not varied or customizable enough. You end up fighting and running the same ugly ships over and over. That and a lack of a human avatar made the game feel like a strategy game more than an MMORPG to me.

Guild Wars 2 disappointed me with thinly veiled Theme Park mechanics and world. Some of the Asian silliness didn't help it in my book, but it was mainly the limited world and the "Run in circles at all times" combat that killed it for me.

RIFT was boring in a can, despite having been advertised as dynamic. When I had reached the last land on day 3 I realized the game would be done for quick for my group.

SWTOR was something I followed for a long time before launch, and even bought one of those $150 collector's editions. The game was ultimately so bad that I ended up hating it for the total fail that it is.

EQNext was announced at SOE Live 2013, and at that point it became clear that it was going to suck, as a minecraft hybrid with Disney Graphics and console combat.

From pre-launch til months out, 99% of my playtime was perfect. 1% of the time I had framerate issues, or fell through the world, or crashed due to memory leak. I quit because of WoW-like gameplay. But woW players were playing WoW and lacked the cpu horsepower to play VG.

If there were SWG haters, they were scant and spoke softly; I only ever heard praise spoken of SWG (until CU/NGE).

YMMV, but I believed the hype and switched to iPhone (5s) from android last year. Big mistake; I curse my iPhone frequently and will dump this phone the minute my contract concludes.

    1. Iphone UI (texting, dialing, etc) is disgustingly plain compared to android
    2. The camera takes comparitively crappy pictures
    3. It's proprietary as shit; pain in the ass getting stuff on and off the iphone. My Android in contrast was like a portable computer.
    4. Maps and navigation are terrible; I never got lost by a navigation system prior to getting an iphone
    5. The UI naviation on built-in and purchased apps are just the worst. To navigate you have to click a tiny link on the top of one page, and then on subsequent pages click another tiny link at the bottom of the page. Links don't stand out, either, so you really have to look hard at your screen. I've no doubt the majority of smart-phone related driving accidents are caused by the iPhone and not the android.

Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

I was really surprised to see SWG on someone's list. I never played it because i was into Anrachy online big time back then. DCUO was a huge letdown for me. It was a console mmo and still plays badly on pc. Eve online was just and still is a griefers game.
  • ryuga81ryuga81 Member UncommonPosts: 351

There's no doubt SWG was buggy.

But it had more features at release date (or shortly after) than ANY MMO I had the chance to try. ANY.

Player housing, player built/controlled cities, sandbox player-controlled world and economy, the most amazing resource gathering/crafting system ever (no other MMO I know of had come any close, ever).

It's probably the less disappointing title I could think of.

World of Warcraft, for me..... is the biggest disappointment.

The game started so awesome, became so popular, and over the years Blizzard took in billions. After all that money, look at what the game is today.

    I'll agree with that.

When I bought WoW... I was coming from WC3. I was expecting a lot of open-world PvP. I was expecting raids on enemy towns, griefing, camping... PvP. And there was some at first. However, within the first year, the community learned that PvP was not what WoW was about. Open-world PvP was in fact a complete waste of time.

I don't think WoW ever lived up to the promise of WC3. Or even its opening cinematics. When you roll a tauren warrior, you think you're going to be fighting for Mulgore... but no, you're just another hired sword fighting for purples.

i wasn't going to but well here i go......

1.) dragons prophet: launched as an incomplete and at times buggy game. while it got alot of dev attention over seas the usa version was basically letft to float.

2.) the sims online: an ip with huge potentional basically rellegated to a habbo hotel style chat room

3.) tor: for all the improvements the launch was abysmal and once the single player campagain was exhausted you just sat there bored.

4.) face of man kind: the concept was great, the execution was seriously awful

    5.) earthrise: just god awful

    so say we all

    DCUO.

Just didn't live up to the hype. But they've found other ways to make it profitable at least.

My biggest MMO disappointment is by far, bar none - Guild Wars 2. The first one was my mmo home for years, so naturally my excitement was high for it. It came out - I loved it. Slowly, the seams of its illusions became apparent, realizing it was a pretty shallow. I had hoped they'd expand on their strong foundation and to my dismay, they hadn't. And they won't. It started out strong and then all of their promises went out the window.

Second to that is the f2p transition of LoTRO. In between Gw and Gw2, it was my home. I roleplayed, I raided, I experienced the MMO to its fullest. Then the price walls came up, the store advertisements. It was like watching the girl next door becoming a stripper.

Destiny is my current disappointment. I was really hoping for a good space exploration game with a nuanced story and good coop. Instead I got a game that's a shallow impression of existing IPs. Twilight seriously has more character depth. Warframe has more mission variety. Hell, I could probably find the crappiest f2p cesspool listed here and it would at least have player trading.

I want to say I'm disappointed in Wildstar, but I don't expect much after GW2. I'm that jaded.

ESO was another huge disappointment, hoping to see a TES game with no borders. Didn't happen. Instead we're given some race restricted grind fest. At least it has a story. I'd actually consider buying it now, since they made some changes. Time will tell.
