I love when people put together things like this. Question everything and see what shakes out.
Whichever way it goes. I am excited to see how it turns out. I just hope they have a more finished game than Planetside 2 was when it released.
PS2 was (and is) a lot of fun but now it has so much more to it than when it released. IF they had put out the game as it sits today, the FPS landscape would be very different. There are so many awesome features. But most of the players that are big thinkers and innovators have moved on already.
But I have high hopes for EQN. I just wish they would get it done sooner!

The author (me), may indeed, be out of his mind. That's a day to day call on occasion. I am fully specialized in forgetfulness and absent-mindedness, it's my thing!
But I think you misinterpret my point here. Over the past twelve months, TESO, Wildstar, and Archeage each has had its moment as "the next big thing." Indeed for a good chunk of the past twelve months, a lot of the MMO discourse was "TESO or Wildstar?" Each of the fan archetypes I described in my opening paragraph manifest for each of those games.
Each of those games has now launched. It is EQN's turn to step into the role of "next big thing." Had each of those games been raging, screaming successes with a kajillion accounts each (hyperbole intended), my point would be the same. Having released, they are now off the horizon and are in the present, EQN is the horizon.
EQN is also the only (although I hesitate to use the term ONLY) AAA MMO in development. With Blizzard cancelling Titan, the AAA publisher project list is a bit sparse.
If you look at the hype-meter here at MMORPG.com, it's EQN and a number of indies. In the years that I have followed MMORPG and in the time I have been writing here, that's not been the case before. There are nearly always a couple of AAA's sitting out there baking.
The other MMO's on the horizon are the Kickstarter/Indie bunch: Star Citizen, Gloria Victis, Pathfinder, Camelot, The Repopulation, Elite:Dangerous. You can add Shroud of the Avatar to that list as well. Those are each very interesting projects. But, they each hearken back to the MMO roots with smaller teams, substantially smaller budgets, narrower scope (than EQN), more niche focus. Of course, with the way Star Citizen raises money, I'm not sure small is the precisely right term anymore (bigger than small, but still not enormous)? Those projects certainly are on the horizon. But, if for no more than sheer budgetary reasons, their profile on the horizon is smaller.
I had no intention to associate EQN with the individual perceptions of the successes or failures of any of those three titles.
The AI technology is at its peaking point. I know this for a fact as i work with this IRL. However...i find it hard to believe that EQNs AI NPC would be any different...than the one we saw when farcry 1 got relseased. What we will see.. is a world timed in instances which will ruin the sandbox feel.i repeat to do What soe wants will require the entire server power that nasa has to power one mass server. I hope they succeed as EQ is and always will be my nr1 mmo.

I don't think EQNext is set to be all that much of a sandbox. They started backing away from that after Landmark made them realize they were going to have a problem with open world land claims (see: Archeage).
The Storybricks land game and the quests will be feeding you content, and I somehow doubt that grinding mobs will be a viable way to level. No SOE provided Landmark as your sandbox, so they didn't technically lie.
MMORPG players are often like Hobbits: They don't like Adventures
Great. Another game with factions and not a word about population control. I hope Next has a plan to deal with a 90%-9%-1% population distribution.
And no more tab targeting, please. If you have your farmer and orc fighting and you can't help but hit both you need to go back to killing 10 rats to get better at aiming.
"But how does that mesh with an aoe-fest action combat?"
You assume WAY to much. They have put a focus back on a great aspect that many modern MMO's have forgotten about and that is "Control" (ala CC). So I seriously doubt it will be an AOE fest if you want to survive the more complex encounters.
There are different types of CC in these games, and I think it would be a mistake I think to assume that they are following the slower more precise model of EQ.
I am expecting to see something much much closer to the City of Heroes model, if you are familiar with that.
I expect to see CC AoE being fired off a lot.
(Not presenting my expectations as fact, just the way I see this going personally on what's been shown so far).

Sorry to burst your bubble, but it really is not a sandbox, just another themepark with some sandbox flavorings.
So what parts of the game are themepark? What themepark features makes you list this game as a themepark?
The game will clearly be a hybrid, as the vast vast majority of 'sandbox' games are. People can call it a themepark with sand elements, or a sandbox with theme elements, I don't care really... It's a pedantic and tedious debate.
To be frank, most players calling for a 'sandbox' don't even know what they are asking for... A 100% pure SB MMORPG would have them running here raging about no structure or direction or whatever in minutes.
I'm very unhappy. The game sounds awesome... The game probably WILL be awesome (by design).....
But Old Indian Proverb say.....
Give anyone too much rope and the griefers will strangle you, themselves, every other player, the developers, the GMs, the NPCs....... All while laughing gleefully and ranting about how "They bought they game and are entitled to do what they want".
The truth is... There are far more total a****oles in online gaming, than there are people looking to play by the rules and have fun together.

It's a good question in this case. What does SOE mean by sandbox? They backed away from calling EQNext a sandbox 9+ months ago. It's probably something that doesn't fit in either category by the sound of it.

We all know (but dont want to admit) that SOE is in over its head with how players will abuse/exploit the dynamic systems. It is the clear elephant in the room, and the one thing that they have not even recognized exists. I am sure that they have high hopes for their systems.. and that they believe that they have it all under control... but without a doubt, there will be a very harsh reality adjustment for them once the players get their hands on the game. I am sure (absolutely no doubt) that some playes will find ways to take advantage of these systems, and that it will be a long roller coaster ride of 'fixes' to try to stop players from doing what they do best... break things.

murrrica fuck yeah!
bah
im anxious about the game as its looks and sounds way too good, maybe too good...
but oh hey AoC and SWTOR sounded awesome in paper...and once you play them, they are are ok but not as epic as expected.
im quite curious about how long the event taken as example in this video would take in real world/play time to complete,if have a permant result im guessing days...
I have little doubt that EQN will come nowhere near the hype it is getting and SOE is giving it.....I've played enough of SOEs games to know that they tend to promise more than they deliver....I expect a mediocre MMO with gimmicks that are not what we are hoping for......Also the gamer that made EQ1 and some of the older MMOs really click is pretty much gone on to other things.
Originally posted by flizzer Im still not convinced this will be radically different than dynamic events in GW2. Prior to GW2 launch dynamic events were lauded as amazing gameplay features. What happened? The game launches and we replay almost the same content across every zone in an endless loop.
Dynamic events (not sure why the call them "dynamic") can be fun at very start ... but become very bad experience in short. Left after half year Gw2 exactly for bad questing and find myself logging into gw2 many times ... then leaving without actually playing.
For me nothing comes even close to good old classic quest hubs and progression.
Still if I can move by pressing both mouse buttons (WASD be gone!), have 3rd person view, is pve oriented (or at least not pvp enforced), have more then 1 toolbar for active spells (sole reason I left TSW and Wildstar), with tab targeting being on wish list... I will for sure buy & try.
If it is tab-targeting, I won't play it. I tried Archage and like most of the game...but tab targeting ruins it. I am disapointed in the limited number of skills you can use/equip at a given time however. I hated it in NWO and just tolerated it in TESO due to at least weapon swapping giving me a new skill bar. I get that there will be tons of skills due to being able to learn all the classes, so I can know hundreds of moves but only use 5 (i think) actives + the same in passives? This is a hard pill to swallow. I can get behind selecting just a few moves for use, but I feel their chosen number is too low. I liked the article for the most part. These are questions I myself have asked at some point. Good Job.

Actually if they do deliver what they say then it will be very much sandbox. If by non-sandbox you mean they don't require full non-concsentual open pvp then yes you're right. This game promises to be exploration free roaming driven which by definition makes it a sandbox.
