Welcome back to another edition of the RPG Files! Each week we take a look at the latest and greatest in the world of roleplaying games and deliver it fresh with a side of commentary and more than a little snark. This week we’re taking cues MMO part of our site with the news that Star Wars: The Old Republic will be releasing a Revan-centric expansion, a character last seen in Knights of the Old Republic. Will we ever see a KOTOR 3? That and the news of the week in this week’s breakdown!

Kotor was and is my favorite rpg of all time. SWTOR was a major disappointment to me, similar to the article's author. This same thought ran through my head when I learned of a Revan DLC/expansion. I've been hoping for more Kotor's for years and the revealing of a Revan based SWTOR expansion only seemed to lessen my flames (more like embers) of hope.
To be honest, I'm not interested in returning to SWTOR and playing against Revan. My hopes were to continue the Revan storyline one day, not take him down (or fight against him whatever).
Also waiting for DA:3 eagerly after that disastrous debacle that was DA:2.

Loved KOTOR especially the second one. Would really like a third. Thanks for the memories, now I think I'll give it another play through.
Another game I liked a lot was Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines. Kudos to the players who modded it out to play on modern specs with extra quests added and another version with a total remake of the game. Really, I would buy a KOTOR remake with upgraded graphics and a few new quests. :-)

We definitely could use a really GOOD mmo.. guess we are going to have to rely on EQN living up to the hype...
Blizzard isnt doing anything, Funcom has nothing worthwhile on the stairs. I really only see The Repopulation and EQN in the near future. Any I missed?
Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous would be biggies.
On another note these new games coming out (public offerings) getting people use to paying thousands of dollars for pixels are beyond me. Second Life I can understand as I once saw documentary about a lady who claims to make a six figure income from creating and selling high end houses and fashion in the game.

I wouldn't rule out a KOTOR 3, seeing how long "dead" franchises like Syndicate, Deus Ex, X-Com etc. where revived, along with many others. Actually, SWTOR itseilf is a revival of KOTOR obviously, though not what most people hoped for. Anyways, that just means we have to wait longer.
There is one thing though: Was any franchise continued with "regular" games after receiving an MMO? Well okay, Final Fantasy, but besides the name they do not have all that much in common anyways, so let's ignore that for a while. Often, it's because the MMO is just too new, like with Neverwinter and TES. The same holds true for KOTOR for another few years.
WoW is now around for 10 years though, and we don't have any clues for Warcraft IV, and Ultima Online will soon reach a whopping 20 years, and besides the cancelled Ultima Online 2 there was never even any mention of a sequel of any sorts afaik.
I guess you can use the Lord of the Rings franchise as an example for other games coexisting with an MMO, though interesting enough, the only actual series, Battle for Middle-Earth, did not receive a new entry, we only got games that have no relation to each other. One of them was a MOBA anyways, thats the next "big" thing game developers and publishers jump on now that MMOs turn out bad more often then not.
There also franchises like The Setltlers, Anno, C&C, AoE, Myst, Fear etc. All received an MMO, no sequel (with the possible exception of random mobile games) since then.
There are also several Asian game franchises that were turned into an MMO and did not receive a (non-MMO) sequel yet, e.g. Allods (the prequels were known as "Rage of Mages" in the west).
Overall, the chances for a KOTOR 3 look bad, but we need more time to see what happens to all those franchises turned MMO to really tell.
I think the biggest problem is that right now, MOBAs are the thing to do, so we might get a MOBA for every even only remotely popular franchise, just like with MMOs before. This would delay any potential "regular" sequels for 5-10 years. Unless the MOBA turns out extremely bad and no one wants to touch the franchise in the next 20 years..
I'll wait to the day's end when the moon is high
And then I'll rise with the tide with a lust for life, I'll
Amass an army, and we'll harness a horde
And then we'll limp across the land until we stand at the shore
I love KOTOR and KOTOR2. Then I played SWTOR. I hope there is no KOTOR3.
BioWare managed to make a MMO that just wasn't fun for me. They had everything they could have possibly needed and still screwed it up (obviously, IMO). A sci-fi game not based on the Star Wars IP might be interesting but after ME3, DA2, and SWTOR I think BioWare has just lost what they had that made them great.
Does it have to be KOTOR 3? Why not just some triple-A Star Wars RPG? I'd love to see more varied RPG's from Star Wars universe and not fixate on just few specific series.
For once it would be fun to play a Star Wars RPG that is set after the original trilogy instead 1k-5k years before. More open world style game where I could become a mercenary/bounty hunter instead of Jedi/Sith too. I'd love to see Skyrim or Mass Effect of Star Wars, why not a combination of them both + a whole lot of new added into the mix.
Sure, KOTOR 3 would be nice too, I loved both 1 & 2, even SWTOR in it's boring WoW shape is fun, because Star Wars, but I would not mind something new. Oh yeah, we're going to get some B-grade movie license games from Disney as soon as the new movies start pouring in... Bleargh...
i hate how mmos effecting famous single player games, swtor, eso etc all made based on single player version which became famous, and companies are sucking money out of fan boys of those games, destroying any hope and future for single player version of them.
swtor expansion is small only 2 planet, 2 story line, one general and one class related, and that is about it, i would say like 10 hours of game play and after that the gear grind and raiding and general and typical end game for an mmo nothing more.
i like to see kotor 3 with big open world like skyrim and at least 100+ hour of game play and I WILL PAY EVEN 100 EURO FOR IT.
but we all know swtor ruined everything end of dreaming, and i repeat i hate mmos destroying famous single player games.
Boobs are LIFE, Boobs are LOVE, Boobs are JUSTICE, Boobs are mankind's HOPES and DREAMS. People who complain about boobs have lost their humanity.
Another problem is that KOTOR is based on the d20 system. That means lots of skills, dice rolls, and pretty much every other role-playing game mechanic that has been thrown under the bus by the simpletons.
What? I have to have skills to do things like interact with NPCs and climb? Fuck you, I'm a modern MMO player, give me mouselook, two buttons, and no consequential choices.
TOR's stories suffer from being way too cheesy for the most part. It's like the marketing department sifted the whole thing finely until only the most clear but unimaginitive lines remained.
I still enjoy the stories despite that though. Some of the class stories also manage to rise above the whole deal and revoke that old KOTOR feel a bit. The smuggler's story did that for me at certain points through it.
We probably won't see a KOTOR 3 in the same time-period as Revan again. But we might see an RPG that tries to follow through with that franchise tackle a period in the SW history after the events of TOR.

If you checked the full disclosure of Disney's seizure and merger of Lucas Arts. They struck down everything from the original KOTOR through to what's offered in SWTOR known as "The Extended Universe" and fanfiction cannons associated with them. This was in order to make way for their series of movies and avoid conflict in what they intend to bring in during those movies. SWTOR was given a special exception solely because it maintains a profitable avenue for Lucas Arts and thus Disney. However, if it can't/isn't done within SWTOR, then it will not happen. Unless Disney ties it in with the movies.
Therefore, there cannot ever be a KOTOR 3. Which is regrettable, especially when you consider Disney will not allow Bioware to make any additional Star Wars games, only additional content within SWTOR. My advice for those that really want a KOTOR 3, is to subscribe, invest, and voice your concerns and desires for improvements to SWTOR. Because this is the end of the line when it comes to The OId Republic folks. Bioware has done a lot to offer what the players want (non-rail space combat, housing, planetary raids). With no possibility for additional Star Wars games, and with enough community investment and interest. We may be able to get them to revamp the game and get the things we want to see. For me, that means cleaning up the graphics engine since it has a lot of garbage code and runs poorly given it's non-realistic appearance.
I doubt even if they made a true Kotor 3, I doubt it would be anything worthy of Biowares past rpgish games.
The realy key people that made the previous games great have long gone and left the company. The company is now almost an entirely different beast then it was.

A Skyrim Starwars is the game I want.
I desperately wanted to live vicariously through a Jedi when ToR came out. Then i listened to the dialogue for them and wanted to punch every single one of them in the face for being so predictably cheesy. Way too much new trilogy dialogue and not enough Alec Guinness type responses.
