Been considering coming back to this game, so wanted to know what people thought about the end game content.
So I am someone who mainly enjoys small group style play, I primarily play Tanks and Healers. On release I found the dungeons fun, but ultimately pointless (for leveling) as they often wouldn't drop any useable loot, and granted no xp past the first run. I assume dungeons still aren't meant to be an alternative to questing and I'm willing to accept that, but how are they at end game?.
My main question is regarding max level, is there challenging small group content that is both worth doing, and that people actually do regularly? Also is small group roaming in pvp viable? For instance in GW2 if you weren't with one zerg or another, you were mostly just wasting time.

They have added quite a bit. I would read the last big patch notes thread here: http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/131752/patch-notes-v1-4-3#latest
Dragonstar Arena (single group trials) is live but I haven't done it so no clue how worthwhile (or fun) it is. 1.5 is coming and will add repeatability to dungeons and a bunch of other stuff.
The game is technically much more solid now than at release. Bots and spammers are pretty much gone. Game runs for me more smoothly. Bugs have drastically been reduced. Dye system is awesome. Dungeons continue to expand. More and more small features and options added (example wider field of view in first person).
HOWEVER, even as a huge supporter of the game my vet 1 remains parked there until they revamp the veteran zones and implement the champion and justice system. That along with the grouping improvements, grouping tool, chat bubbles, etc that are on the way means that the game is only a couple of updates away from being quite the themepark beast that many were hoping for at release. So if you want to jump in knowing that this is all on the way, nothing is stopping you as the game has improved quite a bit. If you want what so many wanted at release, then wait just a bit longer for a couple of major updates that look awesome.
There Is Always Hope!

I'm basically in same boat as OP. Thinking of coming back. Left my V2 char because of vet content.
Will probably start over on a new faction. One question thho.
How's pvp in Cyrodiil. Still active or limited to certain campaigns?

yeah read it. Sounds interesting and glad they keep improving the game.
Still think Cyrodiil is not going anywhere. But if campaigns are deserted then not much point to it which was the case with my old home campaign. Guess I'll find out eventually.
For the NA megaserver, only one campaign has a strong population with all three alliances. Ebonheart has the lowest population of the three and is only competitive in Thornblade. I used to play for Ebonheart and as a Pacific timezone player, I couldn't find enough adults willing to do PvP during west coast prime time hours. Essentially once the clock hit 9 PM my time, Ebonheart went to sleep. Daggerfall and Aldmeri have much healthier populations beyond East coast prime time.
When I said i had "time", i meant virtual time, i got no RL "time" for you.
