What does the R in MMORPG really stand for?

This is something i just thought about when my friend asked me waht an mmorpg is and tbh, i'm stuck. Ofcourse, the proper answer is roll but when you think about how games these days, it's far more of a role than a roll.

Sure, combat still involves random number modifiers but it's hardly considered rolling dice as the conventional meaning of roll means.

well then... im glad it stands for role and not roll, eh? because otherwise, we would be lacking dice all the time, and that would just suck ::::29::
