Your going to get a lot of conflicted opinions here, and what someone likes might not be what you like. I suggest narrowing it down to about 5 games and play the week-month trials they offer.
But to go along with your original question, my favorite mmorpg's are Dark Age of Camelot, Horizons, and Planetside.
DAoC is just a simply great all around game. Most of the community is very helpful and the PvP is the best designed in an MMORPG IMO. There are problems though, since it is getting older, a lot of the population has shrunk, so expect to solo up to maybe levels 20-30. The graphics are also slightly outdated, but some expansions have made up for that.
As for Horizons, I never really saw the bad in it as too bad. I loved the way it played and the story was fine for me. It has a bad rep as being underdeveloped but thats your opinion.
Planetside is just simply fun, and is a nice alternative to the other MMORPGS around. If you join a good outfit(guild), attacks can get really organized and very fun if you like that type of gameplay. Its known to be one of the best games for 'Epic' battles if that's what your looking for. I would suggest to really give this a try once the free basic account offer opens on the 12th.
I'd wait. There's a lot of garbage out there. I know, it's not very helpful.
If you have to play something, I'd go with City of Heroes. Sure it's mindless, but it's a lot of fun at first. And they got a free trial out (or at least they had one). That should keep you busy until something good comes out. The Chronicle should be coming soon.
If you wanna play mmo's dont play one right now they are all garbage like the poster above suggested.
If Action-RPG's are your thing then there is Star Ocean 3 which is kinda fun. There is also Romancing SaGa which is cool but you have to give it time to enjoy it. The game is very open ended and not for the typical gamer. Also Final Fantast 12 is almost out; but it will be kinda bad. Looks like a cookie cutter version of Final Fantasy 9 and 10; the lead characters look exactly the same which is really irritating about the series. When it comes to action-RPG's no one really tops Square-Enix. Also I heard Radiata Stories and Full Metal Alchemist the games kinda suck.
On traditional RPGs. Most of them have transfered over to the mmoRPG realm. Can't really think of any in the last 2 years that were descent.

Ok well here is what I say, if you listen to the two posters above me then my recommendation would be Vanguard:SOH due out later this year. But realize that they are slightly over exaggerating in that there are still some decent MMOs out... just not many lol. so if you do want to play one now i would also add my suggestion for DAoC. It is a nice classic game, one of the few that released shortly after EQ. BTW EQ would of even been ok but im afraid to even suggest because it is bordering on unplayable resulting from the masses of expansions that have changed that game. Anyway, the graphics for DAoC aren't too bad with the updates, and the gameplay is still relatively solid despite its age. May be a nice experience to step into MMO's with. Better yet, i think they are still offering their 14 day downloadable trial...
In either case i hope you enjoy MMOs and if it is really your first then i think your in for a pleasant surprise in what these games can offer... ENJOY
EDIT: BTW i know ill get insta-flamed as soon as i touch the post button for this (maybe even before ) but what ever they tell you, don't go with WoW as your first MMORPG. Sure it may be easier to get into and easy to progress, and the game will guide you through everything etc, but overall you wont be getting a real, open, MMO experience. Much better to start with a classic and then have a solid idea of how these games started out then you'll be able to really compare these new games such as WOW to what really worked and started the genre from the beginning. Just my 2 copper and im positive you'll see many people who disagree with me, so just take that advice with a grain of salt and formulate your own opinion how you will.
Ive tried DaOC it wasnt very fun and it was so impossible to find people in the towns and cities.WoW i had a 60 on so it got old,FFXI my Acc got jacked....Planetside i might try or City of Heroes.
