As an ex-SWTOR player who quit after first 5 months of playing, I have to say I'm very confused with this game.
I read about it and it seems that the game has improved a lot and there's a lot of players around. Then I log in occasionally, only to find that the game hasn't changed much from my perspective, and there's barely anyone around (EU servers).
It's like every time I log in, I log into the parallel universe of SWTOR compared to what I read about on the Internet.

I'm a EU player also and I get what you mean. Tough, around 18:00-19:00 GMT, on the RP-PVE server, I find plenty of players around even on low level planets.
I think lots of opinions vented on the Internet refer mostly to the US state of the game, that it seems a bit different. I get the impression that is more alive on the US that on EU.

Have you checked for different instances of the planet you are on?
A while ago I had someone on general chat go "Wow! There's only 7 people online, Destiny's really had an impact on this game*!" and it turned out they were simply in one of the low population instances, but didn't realize it until it was brought up by myself and others.
* It was the day after Destiny's launch after all.
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

I did, but still not a lot of people around, especially in 30-50 zones. It must be the EU server thing. No activity on different EU gaming forums either. This game is just not popular here any more.

Not really, I find plenty of people on my home server, The Red Eclipse, which is an EU server as well. In my experience it's more the last couple of planets like Belsavis, Voss and Corellia where the population drops.
I suspect it's partly because people find them to be too long, so they generally stick with their class story and skip much of the rest.
KDY (the 15-55 Tactical FP) also lowers the planetary populations a bit, since a lot of people use it to level these days. (I personally couldn't stand doing something so repetive, but there are plenty of others who can).

Well considering what he has been through for the last 300 years, it's not suprising that he's like this now.
I finally logged in last night and there were some improvements.
First, the battles are better balanced.
Second, the game runs better under lower bandwidth conditions.
Unfortunately, the tech support has gotten worse. I tried to open a ticket on how the game changes my display and no is available. The system shows loading for ticket history and I can't open one. They push users to the phone now and basically all tickets have to be opened from inside the game now which isn't the best approach in opinion.
Almost forgot, I had to rename all my characters. Thanks EA/BIOWARE!
When I was forced to rename my characters, I was pushed a url on swtor but when I wrote it down I must of written it wrong. Does any one now what the url is to read about the rename policies?
This game is coming along but it's not ready yet. I played some more today and the companion sticks regularly and when you die the button to send you medic froze on me. I had the system tell me they were doing maintenance and logged me out. On a Saturday night at 8pm, really?
I find it amazing that I have been playing this game three years and never had any of these strange issues with performance. It is almost like some have never played or are playing on a calculator.

The amount of misinformation in this just to justify pandering to this sites swtor is dead crowd is amazing.
". that is, if you assume the game will survive the 3.0 expansion cycle into a projected 4.0. I'm personally not holding out huge hope for it, because BioWare's contract for SWTOR is due to expire here in a couple of years, "
Where did you get that information, did you not follow any of this games announcements, they said before and after launch "10 years of planned content" you dont plan ten years of content if you only have a 5 year license. Give one verifiable source that indicates the license (or as you call it "Contract") was only a 5 year deal please, otherwise this is just lazy sensationalist journalism at its worst.
Also, did EA not just get the rights to all Star Wars games? Where is your information coming from because it seems rather, to put it bluntly, disconnected from reality?

I was reading the article until I got to that point and then began to skim it, since it was obvious what the author was going for indeed.
I'm guessing they based it on outdated information from before EA acquired the Star Wars license for the next ten years (which was a year or so after SWTOR's launch?).
The topic's come up on the official SWTOR forums a couple of times too, usually along with the hope that if SWTOR dies soon someone will bring back SWG. But yeah, with EA holding the license for SW in general, and SWTOR actually being quite profitable these days, I'm guessing there's at least 8 years to go.
And that's provided Disney doesn't simply renew the deal if it has proven to be highly profitable for them.

I can see Bioware implementing a No Server PVP system where they take the entire Swtor population to fill up the PVP Queue and don't do any server merges.

SWTOR is one of the most played PC games or MMOs. The game doesnt have a population problem and is been like that for the last 2 years.
Class specific quests were one of the best parts in original release that drived me to complete all possible combinations. And really love all quests are voiced. And I love also all the rest. :-)
Unfortunately release is too close to WOD which I plan to play at least few months (down from half year I have planned before, because there are to many changes I do not like and could happen that for the first time I will not level all my alts (currently 21 maxed out, only horde hunter waiting) in first shot.

I played for about 3 hours this weekend and this game is better balanced and works better under low bandwidth conditions. I had a much better experience. I don't think this game is quite ready yet but it's closer. Notable, is the ux improvements to make you more productivity in the game. Repairing gear and trading are all improved for the better.
I wish I could listen in on their meetings. Their thinking seems bizarre.
I take it you didn't watch Clone Wars?
And Togruta also get a +1 for me because they actually speak basic, so I don't have to listen to alien speak in every flashpoint when I wind up with one.
I still don't see them adding non-basic speaking races. Honestly I can understand why. After about 10 mins of hearing a Rodian talked, I wouldn't be able to hit space bar fast enough. Shame they are going with Togruta possibly for next race. I was hoping for Nadia Grells race. Even though she pretty said that no one on her planet was like her. (Force Sensitive)
