[Column] Guild Wars 2: (Dry) Top of the Heap

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

In ArenaNet's last Points of Interest, the crew talked a lot about Dry Top and how its general design is the direction Guild Wars 2 zones might go in the future. “If you like the stuff in Dry Top, you're in luck,” said Living World Principal Content Designer Teddy Nguyen. “We always look at previous releases to see what worked and what didn't work. It's always a process of zeroing in on what you guys really want. It's one of our more successful maps in terms of, well, everything.”

STILL stuck with the same weapon skills on my 1-5.  I can only change weapons so many times before it gets super old.

At this point, any zone they release will not get me through the weapon skill bore.

I will re-visit this game after they add new weapon skills, though.  They have a good base game, just not the character flexibility that I am looking for.  Once they beef it up, it'll be fun to play again.

Did you ever play an Elementalist, or just another class?
Dry Top is cool, but we need MOAR!

I love the game and have over 2000hours in it but, it needs an expansion. I can't logon anymore cause I have nothing to do. I don't want to play anyother mmo then GW2 but we need more then half of a zone once in awhile to keep loggin in.

It needs new weapons, new classes, races, dungeons, pvp maps, wvw maps, crafting, world bosses and other stuff that I can't think of right now.

I love living story but it's played through in a couple of days and I have no interrest in a new grind zone the game needs more.

Please Anet give us the expansion we all want.

Each class has a number of weapons they can use in many combinations. The point is not for you to stand in one place and spam any number of 40 skills, but to be locked into 10, move around, dodge, jump and evade..move away, keep the pressure on with states like poison and root skills till you can heal a bit and move back in for the kill. You should have a ranged weapon and melee (if you can) in your weapon swap queue. If you run out initiative then you timed something wrong...or were outnumbered.

It's not about gear and spamming pipe organ buttons, it's about using tactics and skill to defeat something. If you fail revise your tactics and weapons you bring into the fight and start over... To me I know I feel a better sense of accomplishment taking on a number of mobs then I would in any other game...combat seems more organic in gw2 and tactical, and I have been playing mmos since UO-swg-and EQ.

I don't disagree with the fact that it would be nice if all classes got some new weapons and skills to play with, but I don't think it will solve the problem you may be having. I also think it is time for an expansion, cause at this point I am farming event chains just to stack gold for my next Legendary.  New areas and dungeons would be nice.

I have played all of the classes many times.  I am well aware of tactics, positioning, dodging and the like.

The point is there are very few choices to change it up after you've played for 2 years.  Being stuck with the same 1-5 skills over and over is just old.

Adding new zones wont change this for me.  That's all I'm saying.

How pretentious! Thanks for letting them know they were playing incorrectly.  Guild Wars 2 is a breathtaking visual experience and the combat is wonderful to some.  To some it is lacking in a major way and doesn't offer the fulfilling experience they are looking for.  The game's combat isn't for everyone and having 2 weapons sets is not only limiting, it can be boring.  How many times will i spin in a circle playing with a greatsword on my guardian?  A million times, that's how many. Oh the meta game for all classes is Berseker gear or i can't participate in groups?  Well there goes the fun i was having with my character.  My personal problem with GW2 has always been , where's the choice?  Oh we're too lazy to balance our game?  Sure let's get rid of the amazing skill system from the first game and introduce this soulless drivel of a weapon system.

More on point, stop telling people they are doing it wrong because you have no place to.  The game's skill system isn't for everyone.

But at the end of the day. No matter what MMORPG you play. You'll end up figuring out the useful skills of a class and the not so useful skills and you are left with recycling through a set of 5~10 skills. So in actual fact they don't need add more.

maybe your brain is tired of MMORPGs.

  • ThupliThupli Member RarePosts: 1,318
Actually, with the way you are limited to 5, being able to pick and chose combos of both weapons and utilities.

So no, you are wrong on that account. More weapon skills would add exponential build potential and customization.

So like I said, bored until then.

I quit GW2 and so did my GF because we were both utterly bored to tears.

The only thing they give a crap about is that stupid living story.

A MMO that has been out this long should have had at least ONE new bloody class by now and an expansion!

What does GW2 have after all this time? Nothing. Just a million new items in their cash shop.

When I wake up, the real nightmare begins

I'd like ArenaNet to begin adding more mechanics to the game. I'm juggling GW2 and ArcheAge at the moment, and I must commend ArcheAge on the sheer amount of activities there are to do. Even if it's simple things like fishing and another crafting profession, housing, farming etc...we need something new!
  • AkulaRAkulaR Member UncommonPosts: 6

Oh, future zones, huh? Are they going to need more than a year to be fully released too?

I just love how ArenaNet keeps talking about adding all this exciting new stuff and when it finally arrives it's either just a new brainless grind without context or something you'll look at once and never again.

But honestly, who cares, right? It's simply more efficient to put more items in the gem store and call it content and update the Living Story every 2 weeks with about 1 hour's worth of narrative to bring the MIAs back so they can buy all this new stuff!

It literally prints money, what's not to love?

  • cesmode8cesmode8 Member UncommonPosts: 431

I stopped playing because I don't like the development focus primarily around living story, with a feature pack only every few months.  I would rather more zones, such as Dry Top I guess even though I was not/am not actively playing the game and didnt try it...we need more skills that they promised us.  We need more reason to play out in the open world in any zone.  The rewards for completing dynamic events is pitiful.  Overall, the reward system needs a revamp.

But yeah, things like new skills added to the game are a must.  How long has it been?  2+ years?  We've been clamoring for this forever now?  But no, we get LS focus.  Adding the Dry Top zone was a good step in the right direction, replayable chapters of the dreaded LS is good, and a few features they have added such as a wardrobe is good(even though I suggested this on launch day..took 2 years to put in).  Now its time to revamp rewards, add more usable and interesting skills, give us reasons to play in the open world.  I would love to just get lost in Timerbline falls just doing events one evening.  But theres no reason to.  I only ever see one or two people every 15 minutes, and they are doing their own thing.  Sadly, the game I dreamt about when I heard of GW2 never fully existed and with the focus on Living Story, I doubt it ever will.

So, GW2 remains uninstalled.  My focus: Diablo 3, with a smattering of time spent in Archeage/Minecraft/Warframe.

I would say that GW2 has a lot to do.  WvW is a huge draw, and if you enjoy the LS stuff(I dont), thats an additional draw.  Sprinkle in some dungeon runs, grinding for materials and meta event grinding, and you have a quasi decent amount of stuff to do.  Problem is...none of these things reward you nicely so eventually you feel like your time is wasted and not spent efficiently.  Or, the sheer number of materials for crafting things is just obscene at times.

Regarding AA: Im slowly...SLOWLY getting into it.  Im very skeptical and cautious with all of the issues in that game right now.  But given time, if Trion can stomp out these problems, AA can easily become the new Eve online and this time I don't want to miss the boat on such an experience.

Agreed, they also need some new skills or at least a substantial overhaul of skills.  I know they recently had an overhaul but it was horrible.  Simply nerfing one skill, buffing another..bah.  Mechanics.  Change up the mechanics of skills instead of tinkering with co-efficients or numbers.  Change up the look and feel.  And for god sakes, add in more skills instead of stupid anti-toxin healing skills that have zero impact on any build anyone uses.

And yes, new class and/or race please.

Enormous numbers of metas, and chests with real rewards in them. I gotta say this because I'm just amazed that they missed this. Uhm why when people were asking for these things in the rest of the world would you ignore your playerbase for 2 years only to learn about it now from a single 3 tier minizone? These are the things we've been asking for for years now waiting on you to respond. I'm just amazed, because if anyone wants proof that these people haven't been paying attention to their players until the 11th hour, this would be it.

  • itssantositssantos Member UncommonPosts: 84

Great game that I put countless hours into but the lack of a carrot on a stick is hurting the *end game* in my opinion.  Getting to level 50 fractals is a challenge but the rewards are a bit too random and nothing major to keep me going back for more.

What is really upsetting is the lack of structured pvp modes. A team death match or any additional variety would be appreciated.

Skill?....BUILD? damn, i think i bought another game cause the gw2 i know requires no skill at all, the zerk "build"is the only viable one and the game is the feast of grinding against undefended mobs or "where is the train" to kill champs with a zerk . My videogame retailer must have joked me :p

Make a build in one of the hundreds online build websites (even zerk build has variations) and I'll tell you a class and a build for that class that will make you cry like a baby on any and every encounter until you change that said build :)

:-DDD I use an ele btw, only for the fact has the most number of usable skills, and the gameplay changes the most if u change weapon (melee d/d, mid-range s/f, ranged staff) and is (was....cause i don't play anymore) squishy enugh to make the way to fract lvl50 a bit (but really a bit) chellenging...too bad that "stack, rally, revive, rally, revive, go on next phase) :-p

I wasn't trying to be pretentious or offend you lol. Just stating that there is a bit more to the game then just 10 skills. And you don't have to go zerk in all groups, in fact zerk is not recommended for all classes in WvW. I always tell people I know going into GW2 it isn't for everyone. In fact I take breaks for months from the game.

I just recently came back after 6 months. I also stated areas it needs improvement. gW2 is a casual game, they know people come and go and anet compensates by selling items in the gem store instead of paid expansions. While offering free content is great in some cases, the slow trickle of new things to do is also somewhat frustrating for vets. Like I said, you end up farming world event chains, dungeons and champs, or working on new achievements.

I hear the next living world update is supposed be pretty big so I'm staying for a bit till that part releases. As usual I'm sure I will take a break again to play other games. The thing I can say I will always like about gw2 is the fact that it is the easiest game I know of that you can leave for months and come back with little to relearn, pretty much like riding a bike.

    imo dry top is crap!

They expect you to ignore things that are attacking you whilst you have your skill replaced by other skills that do not last long enough to actually figure out what to do with them.

I even gave up on the rest of living story because I got to this rubbish, got totally confused and just lost interest and stopped.

If (or should I say when) the rest of the game becomes more like this crap it will be time for me to leave.
