Help Me Pick My "2nd" MMO

donjndonjn Member UncommonPosts: 816

WoW will always be my first MMO. It is just the way it is. I want your help to pick my backup "go to" MMO when I take a break from WoW. I will play them all, but I need a better pecking order.

Please try to pick the better for my current situation as listen below. Don't just pick YOUR favorite game if you can avoid it. I am not really a raider. I prefer to get to max level, enjoy the journey and then figure it out. In other words I would like a max level character in all these games.

GW2
I have a max level 80 Engineer and a couple other characters that are above level 50. I played the crap out of this game in late 2012 and a good chunk of 2013. Ive been burnt out for several months now, but he itch always comes back. I never got ascended gear. But I also dont feel I have unfinished business the way I do with these other two below.

LOTRO
Kind of a vet here. Been playing off and on since early 2008. However, I have taken massive breaks from this game, sometimes as long as a year. Only to come back and play for a month, get bored, then a big break, and the cycle continues. The game has somewhat of a slow combat, leveling and feel to it. It is casual, yet very relaxing. I have a level 75 Champion. I want to get to max level. I want a level 100 Champion. But it feels like a grind to get there. Love the community, I am an older gamer, 44.

Rift
Rift I think is one of the most underrated MMOs out there. Tried the new expansion last night. Once again, I love the open world and feeling of the game. The combat feels a little sluggish as usual, but I have a level 60 that I want to get to 65 then go from there. Rift will always have a place in my heart with LOTRO and GW2.

Elder Scrolls Online
Getting the itch again. Played for 2 months. Got to max level and disliked the VR grind. Loved the combat, graphics, music, story everything else. I am waiting for that FFXIV style comeback for this game. I am waiting for the right time to pull the trigger. I love the Elder Scrolls universe too.

ArcheAge
Played like crazy this last month. Burnt myself out. This is what I do. I play and say this is greatest MMOs ever, then one day, BAM, I'm done. Haven't logged into the game in 10 days just like that. I feel bad too, I liked the game. But I HATE getting ganked. Kind of a carebear. I like pvp dont get me wrong. Enjoyed Warhammer a lot too. I just dont know what happened. Perhaps WoW 6.0 happened...

You have played them all quite extensively and you can't decide which one you prefer?

How the hell can I help with that?

I know, I know. I am seeking some sort of sanity here. This has become the vary definition of a 1st world problem. I like all of these games. But it might be time to cut off a couple of them. And I need help.

  • Definitely Guild Wars 2. I'm just like you on this. FFXIV is my main mmo and I love it. But sometimes I want something different. Guild Wars 2 is the ideal mmo for this. You don't have to spend any money except box price. And most importantly you don't have to worry about falling behind. There is no gear grind so when you ding 80 and obtain your exotic gears you're good to go when ever you want. And if you want some more grind, try to obtain ascended gear and legendary weapons. Just play your main mmo. Then when you want something different, login Gw2 and do some wvw, pvp, living story etc. There is always something to do.

For a second MMO i wouldn't pick any of those tbh, but, if you do like WoW, then SW;TOR might well be a much better option, its really down to personal preferences, but i'd really recommend SW;TOR or FFXIV;ARR above any of those gamesimage

That info is outdated. ArenaNet announced they will implement a "custom" option that allows the player to specify the amount of gems he wants to buy.

Yep, just found that info. That's good.

LoTRO is the only game for me which "does it" in terms of community. I'm also an older gamer and I'm used to how things "were in the past" - like 10 years ago. Except a few rotten apples, most people are respectful adults, with families, a life, jobs etc. I feel I belong there. Also, the game, as you know, is MASSIVE - it probably has the most content on the market, after WoW (if not before). If you have a lvl75 character then probably the game is also (mostly) free for you.

I tried both of those. I actually like SWTOR very much. I love a good story. But I had to make a cut. And I can't stand the male character models; all of them have breasts! I get chest muscles but seriously.

Final Fantasy XIV is a good game. But it is a tiny game. The views are great, but you cant go to the top of that mountain. All levels are a windy singular path. The game world feels small. Invisible walls, etc Not only that but there is almost no character customization. There are like 3 or 4 faces to choose from and thats it. If this game didn't have the Final Fantasy name it would be just another MMO.

ESO, they have a great community once the botters were dealt with. LOTRO is a great game with a great story line but the F2P option even if you pay the sub can still get you to purchase stuff from store so you end up spending more cash with it. But they do have a great community, one of the best. Oh and if you don't sub to LOTRO you end up spending even more than if you just subbed. Either way with LOTRO they are going to get your money.

Overall I pick ESO but it is still only my opinion and like I always say we all have one good or bad. :-D

I'm not perfect but I'm always myself!

i suggest you don't pick 2nd MMO. just continue play others whenever you like. i can also suggest GW2 cause it's really casual friendly. also you probably played the Secret World but it's not on your list. really liked those investigation quests.

let's just say it's made with FF fans in mind and a name alone would repel them.

    my top MMOs: UO,DAOC,WoW,GW2

most of my posts are just my opinions they are not facts,it is the same for you too.

Tried Secret World for 2 months when it came out. I liked it. To be honest, the difficulty level killed it for me. I am embarrassed to admit that but its true. The mobs were a bit overtuned for my liking.

  • The fact that you can't decide is answer enough.

You already played these games enough.  You're brain is telling you this.  You simply want to scratch some mental itch.

You need to do something else.  This is addict sort of behavior.  That is not really exactly what it is.  I am not saying you are addicted to MMOs.  I am saying its similar to it, the seeking without real purpose.  Like when you know you want a snack but stare at the fridge and don't see anything alluring.

Seriously do something else, anything else, something that for which you have a genuine interest and come back to an MMO when your interest is genuinely piqued rather than being manufactured by a mental itch.

Go out somewhere and find something else that genuinely captures your imagination.  Maybe its a video game, maybe its learning guitar.  Doesn't matter.

This feeling will get worse and worse until you do this.  Your fatigue will grow and grow.  If you answer that fatigue by going back to what fatigued you simply start a cycle.   That mental fatigue is simply your brain telling you it wants something different to stimulate it.  So listen to it.

well that's a shame. there is nothing to be embarassed about. still wouldn't be a bad idea if you gave it another chance at some point.

my first and second suggestions still stands.

I have many single players games I have yet to finish. I haven't even finished my beloved Skyrim. Yes it is because I have an MMO addiction. I know this because I get lonely in single player games. I find myself looking in the bottom left corner for general chat or guildies chatting. When I play Skyrim I am all alone. Sure there are NPCs but thats not the same thing.

I have seen and done it all since UO in 1997. I have seen good and bad. The bad times and griefers make me want to quit MMOs forever. Then there are those great moments I've had that I constantly chase.

Maybe its time to buckle down, and cross some single player games off of my list. There must be at least 15 to 20. With at least 12 of them on Steam.

Breasts!? There's still the thin model for you if you REALLY think that, but chest muscles happens to be chest muscles, not to mention they are not visible under clothes.

I think SWTOR would suit your needs quite nicely since you said you're not really a raider, it has the galactic Strongholds these days that provide never ending content for filling up your place with stuff and arranging everything nicely ^^ But WoW is due an expansion in couple of weeks so you'll most likely be busy there for a while.

Seriously though, breasts? Those are not even man boobs let alone breasts. Have to admit though, that chest seems somehow weird looking at it like this, the shape is odd from the angle, but never noticed anything when people have clothes on. Quite ridiculous problem anyway :D

And the skill que is going to become un-restricted in a way that you can add unlimited amount of skills to it I believe. So all you have to do is play for 2 weeks to get all the pre-skills done and then set a 2 years skill que, and log in 2 winters later again!

    oh nice.

its a good gaming retirement plan.

Best way to play is to just let those skills gain up a few years, maybe mine while reading or exercising. then come back

TSW is actually one of the easiest games when it comes to mob difficulty IMO. The mobs are balanced so that people who don't theorycraft a decent build can barely kill them, but people who make a proper survival build will absolutely destroy all non-dungeon content without ever dying once or even coming close. I'd suggest you to look up a decent regen or survival build for TSW and maybe give the game a retry, the story is worth it.

  • causscauss Member UncommonPosts: 666

Honestly, I wouldn't pick any of them. Why? Because they're basically the same game. They all have their unique points, but in the end you do the same as you do in WoW.

My choice (this is what I always do) is to pick another genre. Marvel Heroes 2015 is my 'main game', but I play some Fifa, Minecraft and Pokémon on the side. This way, I have plenty of different games to play. My recommendation to you; try Marvel Heroes. It's free. It's amazing.
