Too old to ride my high horse

d_20d_20 Member RarePosts: 1,878

I've finally found out who I am as a gamer and I'm happy now.

Used to be (even though I first got into mmorpgs via WoW during BC) that I looked down my nose at Warcraft. I was into pvp and played Darkfall, Mortal Online, AoC, Warhammer, and if I did play WoW it was on a pvp server. Recently, it was ArcheAge that showed me where I am.  I just don't enjoy open world pvp any more. In fact, I hate it.

If I want to pvp, I play War Thunder or Chivalry: Medieval Warfare. Or I go back into good old instanced pvp like what I can get in WoW, SWTOR, or Rift. No more griefers. I can do what I want to when I want to. I can play for 30 minutes or 4 hours. It's up to me. I don't have to grind and slave and prepare for battle all the time.

That's how I knew I got old. I don't need the "thrill." Now I just want to chill and relax after work or whatever at my convenience. I realized, I am one of those people who makes developers design games for casuals. I am not elite. My tastes aren't more refined than the average gamer.

I am the average gamer. And I'm okay with that, now. It's a relief.

Now I can go back to enjoying my 12x XP in SWTOR story missions. Loving the Imperial Agent! image

    Good points.

In my case i like to add that regarding open world PvP, i was a ganker and griefer of the worst kind. I only had fun when i ruined the fun of another player, most fun was to make them log out.

Getting older, i changed alot as a person and i would no longer behave in a game like i used to say 5 years ago. Play and let play, i prefer PvE servers nowadays, love to heal others and help everyone with whatever i can.

Its wierd how we grow as individuals and as gamers. The above quote fits my story well!

Funny. I tend to be a healer now, too.

I like my Operative in SWTOR because I get the stealth, but can also heal.

Do you think it's possible to have a "sandbox" game without open world pvp? What would it be like?

    Haha. Fair enough.

I'm on a "I hate open world pvp" high horse now, with a reclining saddle. And truth be told, a "why do all sandbox games think they need open world pvp?" one, too.

Look, I'm happy if people like it. There should be games that have it. But what would it be like to have a sandbox without it? Some would say boring, but I bet it could work and a lot of people would love to craft, farm, trade, pve, and maybe have some pvp that was consensual -- an arena system or something like that.

I have also had a recent revelation and it is kind of depressing. I love open world PvP, I love the competitiveness of it. I recently started playing ArcheAge and have been having a blast, but am realizing that I simply do not have enough time anymore to put into the game to be competitive. I don't have the time for the grind trade packs/fishing all day for gold and gilda, nor do I have the disposable income to throw at workers compensation like they are candy. My skill keeps me in most fights in PvP, but I will never be able to keep up with the thousands that play 20/7 in full delphinad gear. Not  with a full time job and a family.

So I am not sure what to do now. Quit MMOs? I am hoping something like EQ:N can still be fun and competitive without requiring a full-time job to grind, but who knows at this point. Should I stick to arena games? Personally, I can't stand them. Maybe Mount and Blade: Bannerlords, but I love the persistence that MMOs bring. I am just sad I can't keep up anymore :(

Pretty much this is what brought about my realization.

I was on a trade run in my farm cart and I asked myself, "Why am I doing this?" I realized AA was just taking way to much of my time. There are so many things to do -- and that's not a criticism of the game. I had to do a couple trade runs, do some farming, farm some Hasla tokens, etc. And I thought, do I really want to do this? I have other projects I like to work on for fun (besides job, family, personal fitness) and I need a game that I can play for a couple of hours here and there.

I wound up selling my 2 large plots in Solzreed and my aquafarm in Two Crowns to a couple of friends. I then gave them all my gold and said good luck and have fun. I wish all the best to AA. I just realized I would be biting off more than I could chew with that one.

As to ATITD, yeah, looks interesting, but I think I would need some combat from time to time.

Trove is pretty fun to play in short bursts and I will probably dip into it again from time to time in future.

Like I said, for now it's SWTOR story missions at 12x XP. Then there's always WoW, Rift, ESO, and GW2.

I have Landmark as well, but haven't spent any time in it. Will EQN have forced open world pvp?

Well I am 33 and still love open world PVP mmorpgs with full loot and I find anything else really really boring..

We are all different and like different things plus our tastes change over the years as well thats how things work.

Its a good thing there are games out there to cater to all our tastes :)

    Good post OP.

I was old even when WoW came out. I use to hang out in Azshara farming Satyr's with my 60 rogue, waiting to pounce on unsuspecting questers! It was very exciting and kept the adrenaline flowing for a few months, but like you I have moved on. Your comment on choosing when to PvP is exactly how I feel now, but it was so fun while it lasted.

Even if Virtual gaming using something like the Occulus Rif comes out before I have to quit playing, I'm afraid my old heart wouldn't take it anyway, especially PvP. :)

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

Same! I can at least look back and fondly remember doing really tough content. Being an elitist. It's actually fun when some older people actually remember your guild and they're like, "Wow! You guys are still around?" And then it's like, ummmmmmm. Not really, lol. I think that as soon as I move my main PC into my bedroom and I started playing WoW in bed, that was when I became a casual, lol. Same as you, I'm ok with that, though. My kids can also beat me in games now. At first I thought it was because they were cheesy. Then I realized it's just because I was getting slower, lol.

Yes, and it usually is a roleplay server and they become roleplay elitists.

I almost prefer gankers to that. Almost.

Be mellow and just enjoy the combat?

If you only derive pleasure out of games from being competitive, you have to treat it as a career, and I don't think you like it enough to do so.

Personally i just treat games as entertainment to kill some time, and forget it if they are not convenient, and play to my schedule. There are more important things (like work or family) and things as much fun (like some tv) as games. So I don't plan to be that serious in games.

BTW, your forum name is out of MMORPG role playing compliance, just so you know.
