Hex: Public Beta Begins

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Gameforge has announced that Hex: Shards of Fate has entered its public beta phase of development. Hex is a trading card game with over three hundred fifty cards with more to be added soon bringing the total to five hundred plus.

Tutorial and Ease-of-use

In advance of this move, the latest patch introduced a glut of all-round improvements and new usability features into the game. In addition to the reworked interface, which gives players an enhanced overview during duels, there is now an extensive tutorial to introduce beginners to the gaming mechanics in HEX: Shards of Fate. Apart from the exciting battles against other players, the public beta also gives players the opportunity to fight a rich variety of duels against differing grades of AI opponent.

Find out more about how to get started on the Hex: Shards of Fate site.

It's really polished and is fun to play. They give you a decent amount of cards to start. But the only way to get cards is through the Auction House and through purchasing them. The auction house requires insane amounts of gold or paying other players cash shop money to get the cards. So honestly you have to either get a rare card somehow and sell it for cash shop money to get the ball rolling on auction housing or you invest some money. I just didn't feel like HAVING to pay to get cards. I wish there was an alternative way.

If everyone started equally I would consider playing but since players have been playing and collecting for months. No thanks. I'm like that with every game though that does no wipe during alpha and closed betas.

well this is a game like magic the gathering.  you have to buy the cards with real money for the most part.  it's not like the people who have been playing longer have been able to earn more cards than you.  Everyone has to spend real money to buy most cards.  It's just the type of game it is.  It's better than Magic the Gathering in that regard though because only one set is out instead of 20 years worth of sets.

Yeah, I think they should probably take a lesson from Hearthstone. They did their card acquisition really well. Basically you could buy packs, or use gold earned in-game to buy them. Either way, even a very casual player should be able to get a couple packs per week.

This mentality just doesnt compute with me... I mean, by that same thinking why bother playing ANY competive game that has been out for a while. What is the difference between people getting a head start in a alpha/beta, or a game thats been out for a while? None!

this game just didn't do it for me... the first warning sign was when I somehow finished the tutorial by doing 5 damage to the computer that had 7 hp left... and I won?

then the rest of the game is clicking the 'next' button 10 times before you can play anything. it just takes too long to do anything and the mechanics weren't explained very well.

the interface is just... very bad.

I played one game after the tutorial and couldn't take it anymore.

You know you can configure which phases the game stops and asks you to press continue? (can't remember, but I think it is set to all phases by default).

Other than that, I tend to agree that the UI still need some work. Game is fun and far more complex at higher levels.

Edit: By higher levels I meant cards levels (blue, purple, etc).

there are no player wipes.  PvE isn't in yet.  You can buy cards and participate in tournaments (booster drafts, etc) and you keep all your cards.  Bear in mind this game is a real money CCG.  Like Magic the Gathering.  You buy cards and play with them for the most part.

That said, I'm loving this game.  I played MTG but this has some cool digital mechanics that you can't do with the paper game, and it's just starting out so there is only one set atm instead of hundreds of sets.

There will be PvE in the Future ( Free to Play part of the game ) , that u can play it for free, earn pve stuff, sell on Auction House and Buy PvP stuff ( or other things u want ). ATM u need to pay to play in tournaments. Still u can play totaly for free in Proving Grounds. The game give you a free deck ( Orc, Dwarf, Human, Shin'hare ( Samurai bunnys )), and u can make "Trails" to earn some cards for the deck u choose.

" then the rest of the game is clicking the 'next' button 10 times before you can play anything "  . Well if u never played this type of games, this game isn´t for you. There r priority buttons because of Quick actions and activation that can be made in opponents turn for exemple.

I Love the game, but atm im waiting for set 2 to come up

Huh?  My question is why would anyone play a competitive game when the odds are highly stacked against you?

I guess if you are glutton for punishment it would be fun, but for the rest of us, either expect to invest a significant amount of money to be competitive or find something else to play.  Personally I much prefer the way Blizzard did it.  This game just seems like an outright money grab.
