Hey guys, thinking of giving ESO a try. After the rough start it had, it seems to be on the right track and the upcoming large patch is also evident of that.
Curious about a few things if any of you that play can enlighten me...
- How is the combat now? When I played in beta, it was very slow, clunky, unresponsive. Have they sped it up and adjusted it? Specifically talking about third person combat here.
- How are the bugs/bots/exploits/spawn camping? I remember people just camping certain spawns in open world dungeons for loot. Was very sad to see.
- I am a solo player that plays "casually" in the sense that I cannot play 10 hours a day. I usually play MMOs guildless because any guild I join tends to fall apart. How is the solo player experience during leveling as well as at max level? What is there to do for a solo player at max level? Im not against joining up for some 5 man dungeons or whatnot...but curious is there any progression for the solo player. I think this will be a key important note for me.
- Why do YOU play the game? What keeps you logging in every day, even after hitting max level?
Thanks!

It is Monday morning and it has been about 35 minutes since he posted. I would not feel too "enlightened".
Plus given the fact that the OP can read up on the game and do a little research on his own to make up his mind doesnt exactly make people rush to respond.
1. They lowered the weapons switch cooldown from 1.5 seconds to something like .3. That made combat play a lot faster.
2. There are still a few skill line bugs here and there. There are no bots in ESO. No exploits of note, maybe a public dungeon boss who spawns to fast, that's about it. I don't do a lot of pve, but when I do it's solo.
3. There are a tons of delves and public dungeons for solo players.
4. Cyrodiil, character customization, and combat keep me logging in.
Patch 1.5 goes live today. The second phase of the champion system is being implemented.
FYI,
I have been doing my research...reading patch notes as well as the official forums. In fact, I had access to post on the official forums until some...well we wont get into name calling..but some naysayer alerted the forum mods that I didnt have a sub and that I shouldn't be allowed to post. Soon after, I lost my ability, so thus I am here asking. But Ive done all I can with reading...which is why I am considering buying the game. But I wanted to get more first hand accounts.
The biggest issue for me was combat. In beta, it was horrible. I liked skyrim and oblivion but not for its combat. It never was known for its great combat. And ESO was a horrible representation of MMO combat. It grew on me, but stil...clunky. Has it improved? I don't need it to be WoW combat, GW2 Combat, or Tera combat..I understand it will be its own breed. But I need abilities to be a bit more responsive and animations take A LOT less time to wind up. A 2 hander was taking literally 3 seconds to hit. Realism yes, but come on...its a game. When I swing I want it to hit soon after. 2 or 3 seconds later after an animation has fired off and the encounter changes. Huge turn off for me.
Another reason I am interested in it, is that it is lore rich (even though I never have played games for its lore, but ESO games are fantastic at it), and the quests are vastly different than your WoW style questing. I can definitely see myself dumping 100 hours into simply questing all that there is, just for kicks.
Which brings me to end game. What is it? Open world pvp in cyridil? Am I able to progress my character(in terms of gear) via solo play? I hear the terms pledges and trials. What are these? People say there are a ton of solo instances. Are these the instances you experience during the entire game, or are these completely seperate at end game...an entire new "set" of content for max level solo players?
Almost pulled the trigger and bought it...but didnt. Might finish up what Im doing in D3 and put that on hold for a while. Might get ESO around thanksgiving because I took off of work for a week. Just want to make sure its a good buy at 60$ now, and the sub at 15 (which I don't necessarily mind 15 bucks a month).
Pro Tip: submit a ticket via your account page asking to try before you buy and they'll usually throw you one to three days free. They don't advertise it but they'll do it on a case by case basis.
Nice Ill give it a shot.
For me its been the opposite. I find that since they fixed the weapon swapping, I'm a happy camper. I rarely have issues with abilities going too slow anymore. I like the combat a lot more than Skyrim in that you don't have to pause the game and the 6 skills per ability bar (including the Ultimate) makes for far less clutter than I had with SWTOR, Rift, WOW, LOTRO, etc where half of the abilities I almost never used. I feel the combat is a great compromise between WOW tab targeting and the pure complete action oriented making this combat 'soft' tab targeting. It does require more skill and less 1,2,3 type WOW attacks. This is the first game I have ever played where I deviated from a pure mage nuke role and am LOVING my Sorcerer Tank where I feel so versatile. I love now getting into the thick of things head on with block, short and long attacks, AOE, dodge, block, interrupt, etc. I guess opinions are just that, opinions, but sorry I love the combat.
There Is Always Hope!
I asked similar questions about a week ago, my thread is still on the front page of this forum and there still has yet to be one response. We cannot post on the official ESO forums unless we sub, so we rely on asking people in forums like this for information on how the game has progressed.
After a week of no response to my thread and questions I had asked in other threads I assumed that no one here actually plays ESO.
However, I am glad this thread got some feedback, very interesting to hear that the combat has improved, that was an issue for me as well when I was playing.
30 threads on the official forums front page. All with post in the last 10 minutes. Things are quite busy
The front page of the ESO general discussion is of course what I meant
1) combat is good and it is smoother than before. It is still slow (and the targetting sucks balls, you just dont add mob targetting to a reticle game), but other than that it is a good combat. I dont touch first person so yes, third person combat is more pleasant than it was before (again, still mob targetting sucks).
2) They seem to have fixed a lot of bugs.... a lot. I havent seen bots in the couple of days since i resubbed. And dungeon campers are almost nonexistent (unless they moved to veteran areas which i havent reached that point yet).
3) As a solo player (prior to veteran since im not that far yet) the game is fairly solo friendly, with the exception of some quests that require some pretty tough boss battles in the open world, with those i often ask for help in zone chat.
4) I play ESO for the Elder Scrolls Lore (same reaosn i play WoW, the Warcraft Lore). What keeps me playing? having a different experience while leveling with different characters. Im currently lvl 42 on Ebonheart, and 44 on Aldmeri. WHen i reach max level with those too ill go back to my lowbie daggerfall covenant. If that doesnt give the devs enough time to add new content then i take a break form the game until they do. I dont like wasting money repeating stuff many times if i run out of new/fresh content to do. That last part applies to all mmos.
Fortunately, you will find that the majority of the ESO community doesn't even come near this site. With the near constant negativity, there really isn't any point. The bulk of the people that actually play the game tend to hang out on the various Reddit pages. It's really easy to make an account there so you can ask questions and join the discussions.
Maybe it's the class I picked (Bow+2H/1H, Sorc) or what, but combat's never been clunky or slow for me. I actually think Skyrim is way clunkier and slower, it just feels more realistic. Try to use 6 skills in skyrim without "pausing" and going to the menu or using a 32 button mouse. Also, I don't play ESO in First-Person. That might also be your issue if you do.
I think it's more that most of the ESO fans have grown thicker skins like the GW2 fans had to do. So there are only a few of the ESO fans that still feel they need to defend the MMORPG.com forums against every negative post towards ESO because they take it personally for some reason. I have said it before, if you don't like what you read here then go post and lurk on the official forums. If for some reason you just can't or won't do that then try blocking your list of usual suspects here. That tool can work wonders

I haven't blocked anyone and I really like ESO, just wanted an update on some specific factors that made it frustrating for me to play and was hoping for someone to give me an excuse to spend the $15 while I am waiting impatiently for the new Dragon Age to launch...
Hmm, I also like GW2, I always find it strange when people get really negative about that game. Anyway the Reddit idea could be good; and at least this thread is seeing some decent feedback. What annoys me is that a stupid thread that whines about the game will get 10 pages of responses, while one that is actually asking about the game gets nothing or people saying "read up elsewhere".
rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar
Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D
I googled that CD-Key website and it has the game for $15 which is great but reading from people who bought from them it looks like they sell cd keys which where bought with stolen credit cards in russia and sometimes they even ban and block your account.
I wouldn't trust and create an account with a product like that especially adding my credit card info there as it is a sub game as well.
Just hold on OP. If you haven't bought the game already i suggest wait and let them fix this mess first. Unless ofcourse you want to quit once you hit level 50.
I would suggest wait till champion system is patched in..even then i am not 100% sure because only God knows how much more stuff they gonna break once that patch is out.
1 to 50 is where the game really shines with its stories, lore and world. Everything else is a mess right now. So save your money and wait.
Save your hard earned money for an MMO worthy of your patronage. ESO was so poorly implemented and that pattern has done nothing but continue. Go ahead and buy it if you have the money and time to waste because you will undoubtedly be another one who quits within 60 days. I have seen so many guilds disappear or merge because of a mass exodus.
ESO does not excel at PVE end game or PVP endgame. So if you are an MMO fan looking for a game you can play for years. This one is not it.
I'd wait on buying this until all the big changes being implemented actually get implemented. To me, it's just not worth the money until those changes are made. I plan on giving it another sometime next year. I liked the game enough to give it a second chance, but I refuse to touch it until the champion/bounty system is in place, at the very least.
