EQII is going to be making so major changes this month with the new PvP system and starting your class at level 1. DAOC is going to be releasing more high end content and player mounts like WoW. I played DAOC a long time ago and have never touched EQII (EQ I was a great game), so i want to know what do you think about the two games? Which one is going to last longer, which one is more fun to play, which one is less boring?
Comments
Imo, it depends on which you enjoy more: PvP or PvE.
If you're more into PvP, I'd go with DAoC. The RvR mechanic is very fun and makes PvP a little more goal oriented. Otherwise, check out EQ2.

I like DAOC for their PVP. I don't think EQ2 will have Siege Warfare or capturable Keeps/Relics.
The thing I like about EQ2 PvE is that it is interactive with the Combat Wheel and Heroic Opportunities. I like the raid content of DAOC better though. DAOC also has instancing for a lot of it's PvE for grinding. You can get your own dungeon to hunt in.
DAOC has instancing now? from what i remember there was dungeons but anyone and their brother could get in them, not just your specific group. Does EQII have instances?

There are still the regular dungeons. And most of the raid mobs are still in these open zones. However, with the Catacombs expansion pack they introduced a lot of Instancing. You can get a quest and it will make your own dungeon for yourself or for your group and it scales accordingly. This is the new way to PvE since there is an xp bonus in these dungeons, as well as xp reward for completing the quest.
There are also a lot of instanced Dungeons/Quests with the Darkness Rising expansion for DAOC.
In EQ2 there are instances, but you can still end up in a dungeon with other people. Other people that may kill the mob you need for your quest. There is no option to get your own separate intance, like there is in DAOC.
Edit: I just remembered that there are a some quests for EQ2 where you are in your own instance. I still like DAOC better for the PvE because their instances are easily repeatable for the XP grind, and helping the casual gamer.
Seems like with RVR there is something to look forward to in the end game. Doesn't seem like EQ II has this vast ammount of end game play. Doesnt that mean DAOC is "better"?
An SOe game doing that...NO! it can't be .....
Actually Dark Age of Camelot has had player mounts for a while now. They came out with the Darkness Rising expansion but before that there were horse routes you could take to get around the different realms. You can get your first horse at level 35 even if you have the DR expansion or not but the only way to buy the other horses you have to be level 50 and have the expansion cause they are based on Champion Levels (comes with DR).
I've played both EQ2 and DAoC and I have to say that DAoC has EQ2 beat in a number of places. First the world setup is quite nice. Even if you play the different races in one realm you still have two other realms that are setup and look differently then the other two. With the Shrouded Isle (for everyone), Trials of Atlantis (mainly a high end expansion), Catacombs (for everyone), and Darkness Rising (mid to high levels) there is a lot to explore. It most certainly isn't as system demanding as EQ2 and it still looks great. For those that haven't played in a while, with each major expansion (there are free expansions such as housing zones, Frontier revamp (RvR lands were changed for the better)) there is a graphics engine upgrade. Recently new character models were added, changes to the water (first change was the SI expansion), trees, and UI. These are all optional changes as well since you can use the classic graphics if you want to reduce graphic lag. Though Underground Forest (lvl 50 zone) seems to be the only zone where you'll have slight lag no matter what if you run nonstop through it but that's a Catacombs expansion zone.
The realms are of decent size. Hiberina is more nature based having a more celt theme to it with more of a high fantasy look then the other realm, Midgard is norse based being more bland with snow, and Albion is based on the stories of Camelot and King Arthur. The SI expansions are just as interesting with their own storylines. Didn't do much with Trials of Atlantis since I didn't have time for that. Catacombs is really interesting. Each takes on a different theme and goes further into the history of the main realm areas. For example the Albion areas touch on some of the Romean(sp?) past, Hiberina's touches on Dark elves and the veil (big part of the Hiberina's lore), and not quite sure on the Midgard realm since I've never really seriously played there.
With the Catacombs expansion DAoC is even more casaul friendly. It was before to be honest but getting groups has kinda hard due to dungeon areas being camped and you really needed a group for them. You could solo or duo or small groups in the open areas pretty easilly though since there where a number of places to go without having to fight for a spot (poplulation split between three realms helps with that I think). Catacombs introduce task dungeons. Dungeon crawls with goals and experience and money granted for their completion plus the experience and loot during the crawl. They could be done over and over again and they scaled to the number of people in the group, so they are actually soloable as well. Plus the rewards is equal to the risk so you level at a nice steady pace an money to allow you to get what you need at your level. Which leads you into the best part of DAoC. The Realm vs Realm.
PvP with meaning is the best PvP there is I feel. You really feel apart of a team, especailly when you are either going solo or apart of a group outside of a enemy keep or tower surround by a hundred of your fellow Realmmates tryingto take it. See them all rush in once gates are down. Or even rushing with a large number of people back to an area to help defend it. You always find people in RvR. Same for the battlegrounds at the mid to higher levels. Even the low ones have people in them. Great thing is that RvR benefits your actual realm. Have the most keeps and towers and your side gains access to a special dungeon where you can hunt and gain tokens to get even better equipment (mid to high level area). Plus it's RvR based so you can fight other realms inside. Gain realm artifacts from the other side and your realm actually gets a bonus in terms of melee and spell casting that benefits everyone in the realm.
EQ2 is to slow for my taste. Level is to slowed down and the grind is boring. DAoC has a grind but it's actually enjoyable since you do feel you advance and your time is well spent. EQ2 might have better graphics but it's a serious pull on the system. DAoC was designed with RvR in mind. It's a large part of the game. EQ2 I doubt was built with it so that has me worried. EQ2's layout gets boring after a while. Things are to linear. With DAoC you have a set number of places to hunt but you don't always have to go to the same area. You have more choices but with EQ2, once you are out of the newbie areas you have to go to Commonlands or Antonica. Most likely hunt in the same areas to get the most experince or worthwhile advancement. Then it's off to Nek Forest or Thundering Steeps. It's only after that do you have freedom to go to other places I believe. Even in the main realm areas, Hiberian for example. You start out around Mage Mell. You can stay there if you want or go near Ardee which is close by to hunt or down to Conla via horse. Then expand out from those areas. Your not stuck in one single area with every character you make. Plus if you get tried of Hiberina. Go to Albion or Midgard on another server and there the locations and enemies change. Plus tactics will change since you have different classes in each realm. They are similar but different enough that you won't be doing the exact same thing. For example have a Paladin in Alb, Thane in Mid, and a Champion in Hib. All hybrid classes but Pally is healing and buffs, Thane is offensive in spells, Champion is debuffing, self buffing mostly. So you get that difference and that goes for all classes. Play a Warrior in Commonlands, is the same as one in Antonica. Difference liek paladin and shadowknight are few but a Crusader in both areas are the same. Maybe that will chance once the class change in EQ2 takes place.
In the end I say go for DAoC, especailly if you haven't played in a while. It's a lot of fun. If ToA (Trials of Atlantis) bothered you, try the classic servers which don't have ToA active but all of the other expansions instead. Those seem the most populated .
I played both DaOC and EQ2, DAoC would be the one I preferred, but both I played a long time ago and have changed a lot since.
Well now DAOC has my vote, because they kept my old character for over two years. Do you all think that the changes are going to really help EQII or be another combat upgrade?
EQ2 is all but dead... DAOC has been going a lot longer, I returned for a trial recently... the old servers seem pretty empty but the 'classic' server is still going strong. DAOC was much more fun than EQ2 back in the day, for me it's the closest any other MMO has come to feeling like EQ1.
course i was on DAOC the other day and most servers have 300 people on them. Divide that by 3 realms and you get 100 people that you could possibly hunt with. Now divide that by 50 levels and there is only one person thats your level! Wonder if EQ is like that...
Now with clusters servers are grouped togeather on DAOC, so there is always enough people in the battlegrounds n such. Anyone have trouble finding groups in EQII?

This is just a tad off...
DAoC servers retained their names but what you have is:
Four clusters that are the original servers and one of these contains the original rp servers.
There is a fifth cluster which is made up of two of the classic servers.
On top of that..
Non clustered servers are:
Mordred (the only more or less full pvp server remaining)
Geharis the co op server (no real pvp and all 3 realms can group hence co op)
And Gareth the one classic server that was merged.
Right at this moment:
Mordred has a tad over 350 people.
Geheris is around 550
Gareth is: 2206
Of the clusters they range from:
1276 which is Lamo and Ector the classic cluster.
The other four clusters range from 2200 to almost 3000. Also in DAoC unlike EQ2 if you are /anon you do NOT show up on a /who period. In EQ2 and what I remember of EQ1 people could still list you in the zone but it wouldn't show your details such as class/level. In DAoC you just don't show up at all on anon.
These are the average populations and have been for quite some time now. When the classics first opened they had a tad more people and login caps were on them for a while.
So I'm not sure where your average server having "300" players comes from. I've played the game off and on since release. I still login weekly and I've never seen the average on all these servers/clusters be 300...
You can go to camelotherald.com and see the population for yourself... and it seems pretty accurate to what you'd see in game.
Okay now that EQ made its changes, what do you all think about it?
Eq2 is an awsome game, most people that have tried it post LU 16 find this game amazing.
I dont know why people think changes are a bad thing......cause so far everyone i know looks forward to Live Updates, with every one the game gets better, and there are new live events with quests and instances.
I pick eq2, ive never tried DAOC, im sure its also a great game.
Im really just glad its not another WoW pwns EQ2 cuzz its da ROXXZORR !!!!!111!!!!!1
The new EQ2, better than ever befor !

I tried DaOC a couple of months ago and quite enjoyed it. However I had real problems trying to fnd groups my level. Now im playing EQ2 and personally find it vastly superior now. They have done so much to the game to improve it. Hardly ever have problems finding groups to quest with. Its great.
Yeah so after i started this poll i reactivated my DAOC account. While the game has emproved, its still a old game. That means there are less lower level people playing. It seemed hard for me to find a group with my low level characters, and my main is a hero. OMG how useless are tanks in RVR. I can't do alot of damage, and spells just rip me appart. I can't even take Charge (only damage light tanks can). Frankly that spells umbalanced to me and i am not a big fan of that.
Course EQ II's PVP could be really, really imbalanced. Are there class restrictions between good and evil for PvP?
I recently re-activated my account as well for some reason. I guess I expect more but the game feels very dated.. the sounds the animations and the graphics, especially the controls and the UI all feel just dated
I tried some of the custom UI's, none of them really helped matters. It actually made me want to go back to EQ2 since it reminded me so much of it, which I did and im really enjoying the new look of EQ2

Correction:
DAOC has had mounts, player housing and extremely powerful player crafting for a very long time now. Since before EQ2 and WoW released, actually.
DAOC has had tons of high end PVE content since TOA was released and, to a lesser extent, when SI was released, 4 years ago. The expansion they're currently working on is just going to add MORE content to a game that already has scads of it.
DAOC does have some instancing (Task dungeons, Instanced Adventure Wings inside main dungeons)
As to which will last longer? DAOC has been out for 5 years and is actually in a growth stage, don't think it's going anywhere. Both EQ2 and WoW have been out over a year and are growing (though WoW appears to have plateaued) don't see either of them going anywhere soon.
As for which is less boring? That's purely personal opinion. They're all decent MMORPG's. Personally I hate WoW but lots of people like it. I think that both EQ2 and DAOC will offer the individual PLAYERS more longevity simply because there's so much more to do in the end game(s) of those titles. And I think, overall, DAOC has the better RVR combat of the 3 games, by far. EQ2 has slightly better PVE than DAOC. DAOC is about equall to WoW in PVE.
So:
If you like PVP/RVR then DAOC is your choice.
If you like pure PVE and don't care much about PVP then EQ2 is your choice.
If you like a nice blend of the two then DAOC is your choice, by a hair.
Under no circumstances do I recommend WoW to people. Personally I think the graphics are cartoony (big turnoff) and cheezy looking to me and I think the gameplay is shallow and lacks any real end-of-game content whatsoever. PVP is weak, compared to DAOC.

I played DAoC from launch and the nerfs just killed the game for me completely. I tried coming back to it recently and just could not do it.
I'm it would feel totally different for someone coming into it fresh. I really enjoy EQ2 and would suggest it over DAoC personally.
I played EQ2 from started, but due to friends leaving and changes in the guild I switched to WoW, well after a few months of WoW grind and boredom I've gone back to playimng EQ2.
But I'm really waiting to see how the PvP goes in EQ2, if it's good I'll stay. Otherwise it'll be back to looking for a new MMO and playing some PS and EVE while I wait.
You remember incorrectly. Many dungeons in DAoC are instanced, have been since Catacombs. Anybody can get in them, but each party gets their own copy of the dungeon.
Chris Mattern
I really dont get it....
DAoC is constantly losing players and has not even 40% of its peak player level left.
why? PvE in DAoC is simply outdated in every aspect. too much grind, and not much variation.
and DAoCs UI and controls are really bad.
EQ2 is SUCH a fun game and even if you turn down the grafics, it still looks better than DAoC in any way.
EQ2 has far superior crafting, an incredible amount of different and fun quests, great sound, and a beautiful world.
I dont know how the "PvP" is turning out in EQ2, but when we start talking about PvP, DAoC is simply lousy.
play Shadowbane or EVE (my favourite game) if you want PvP.
the so called "RvR" is not even a poor copy of the REAL "Realm versus Realm" you will find in those games. in DAoC, all PvP doesnt matter, because you will never be able to conquer a terretory once and for all. you will NEVER be able to really defeat one realm.
in EVE and Shadowbane the so called "realms" (in DAoC speak) are REAL PLAYER MADE AND CONTROLLED factions. player guilds or alliances that fight for ALL terretory in a free for all PvP.
to say DAoC is better than EQ2 because of "PvP" or "RvR" is just wrong.
EQ2 is a 3rd generation game and DAoC is just a bad copy of Shadowbane with better grafics. if you want "better" grafics, why settle for better than really bad. go for GREAT -> EQ2
and EQ2 is actually increasing in player count
