Valkum Dunes is where you want to go if you want to group up with people. While you are in VD get all your subjob quest items. Do your sub job quest at lvl 18 (I think it is 18 been a while). I would then grind to 20 and go to jeuno get your chocobo lisence and then go back and lvl your sub.
Good luck this game is really fun if you have time (I don't anymore).
If u have been soloing all this time then u r going about it the wrong way I'm afraid. U need to find a party and lvl in valkrum dunes. If u want more info on lvling areas go to http://www.killingifrit.com
It is kinda important to know what city you are in.Square likes to make mobs vary alot in level, therefore never having a perfect solo area. There will always be alot of easy/decents or incredibly toughs, but never an abundance of the perfect EVEN match mobs.
With no sub job ,level 12 will start to get hard as a solo.Saying this i still recommend getting level 14 before hitting the dunes for help with your sub job items[crab apron/dhamselfly worm/magicked skull].Tahrongi canyon offers mobs for a level 12,just be sure to check the mob first and use a lil strategy.
Here is the best part.DC or EM mobs are the best to get decent xp and live to see another fight.without a sub-job even the EM can be very hard to beat. The strat to use is this>>>kill a few easy or decent mobs to build up your TP[special high damage attack].Then when you have say 200tp saved up,give that even or tough mob a go.
Before you engage the mob, have your self in the attck mode. This will beat the delay of having your player wield his weapon.Start off with a range attk/enfeeb magic, then by time it engages you will get a melee attack in as well.
It is possible to solo 14-16 as a rdm in shakrami caves. The easiest mob to fight in the game is the worms. They cannot chase you ,however will attempt to bind you for a period of time.Do not use auto lock when fighting these.Makes for an easier turn and run without auto lock on.Grab yourself all the au lait and fruit drinks you can afford. This will give you regeneration and mp refresh.Stay as far away from the worms as possible.Do this by creeping up a little at a time till u can cast a nuke/poison on the worm, then back away to let your self regen a little, and stay outa the worms spell range.Keep doing this until the worm is dead.If you back away from the worm too long, there is the chance you will lose it.Experimenting on these worms solo, will most likely enhance your skills and make you realize there is different ways to fight than just melee/heal repeat.
One very big thing to learn is the use of macros.I hope by now you have some understanding of them,as they make the game easier to play and gives you a faster response than sifting through the spells or abilities.
Good luck on your redmage.I should tell you now that you will pretty much be a healer/enfeebler/refresher all through your levels. If you had hoped to do alot of melee, then i would recommend a different job class. However in saying this, redmage is an elite class for farming and at high levels is one of the best solo jobs in the game.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
yeah from 14-20 you will want to be in valkurm dunes. At lvls 20-25 youw ill want to fight in qufim island which you can get to from port jeuno. After that it is key hunting time so you can get your airship pass and head to yutunga jungle and yhoatar jungle from 25-32ish. Some people like to head to altepa at 30 but if you are just starting out your prolly not gonna have your altepa gate crystal so getting there will be a pain. Gl and i hope you stick with rdm it is a fun job and always needed for almost everything. Dispel and refresh are always needed and the extra enfeebles and healing you have is nice as well.
