Shards milestones to offer optional permadeath ruleset

Well, I was screaming for milestones here and on the project page and the Shards Online team delivered. Check out the newly-updated milestones below:

Just to be clear, all this stuff will be in the game anyway, but hitting the goals will get it into the Alpha. One of the coolest things on the list, in my opinion, is the optional permadeath ruleset. So for those unfamiliar with how Shards works, basically there are "Official" servers and also player-run servers (or shards). So you can basically think of it the same way you might think of Minecraft. 

 

Anyway, part of that server administration is setting up rules, and it appears that at the 80K marker, if it gets there, they will be adding the Permadeath ruleset to the Alpha build. So for all those permadeathers out there, show your support and drop a couple dimes in the bucket to push this thing over the top!

    I agree.

     

    Forced perma-death is a hard sell in an MMO, but this is a GREAT idea for Shards.  People can setup their own servers with these rules.  I really would love to see the effect it has on PvP.  I have always felt that griefers behave badly simply because there is no meaningful negative for them.  Knowing that they could permanently lose their character might really add something to the equation...

     

    Again though... it's an optional rule on only some servers so it's a win-win in my book.  Don't like it, just play on a server without the rule..

    It is a good idea. I mean I will absolutely NOT play permadeath games. Shoot, I sometimes won't even play a single player game if the save points are too far apart from one another, lol. So, no, I haven't played Dark Souls. 

     

    I have played Hardcore on Diablo 3, though. I'll usually play one or two Hardcore toons, so I'd enjoy having that as an option, but you ultimately will always die in the most awkward and unfortunate way, like you park yourself in an area where there are no spawns so you can go to the washroom, then your dog steps on your keyboard and walks you right into a mob that kills you before you get back. Hypothetically. 

     

    So, yeah, I'm pretty stoked about it as an option. I'm actually pretty interested to see how the rules are implemented on different shards, in general. I guess time will tell!!!
