Elite: Dangerous: Refunds Possible with a Caveat

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

After the kerfuffle earlier in the week regarding the removal of offline play for Elite: Dangerous, Dave Braben has come back with a quick Q&A in the latest newsletter. In it, it is revealed that refunds for those disaffected by the decision are possible but only if the game was ordered through the Elite: Dangerous site and if the purchaser has not participated in any alpha or beta events thusfar.

Braben also takes on questions regarding why the team chose to make the announcement so close to the release, whether or not a single player gaming experience is still possible, whether or not offline play will ever be implemented and the reasons behind removing offline single player gaming.

Will you give people refunds?

We have started responding to requests where there is a clear outcome:

  • Those who have pre-ordered an Elite: Dangerous release version from our online store and have therefore not yet played the game are eligible for a refund.

  • Those who have already been playing the game online in the Alpha and/or Beta phases, regardless of whether they backed the project via Kickstarter or purchased access to Alpha and/or Beta through our online store, are not eligible for a refund.

We want to make sure we treat each person's situation with the thoroughness it deserves, and have contacted each of them to ask that they bear with us over the next few working days if their circumstances do not fit either criteria above as we look into individual requests.

Sounds fair, if you downloaded the game and spent various hours playing it, it's hard to believe a "I don't have internet access" plea.

The standard 'It's all about the vision / the game wouldn't be anywhere near as good without the online requirement' argument... heard it a few times now, yet to see it actually proved true, but there is always a first time.

Never even thought about playing it in offline mode.. its an universe that the people playing change so not sure how that would have worked offline.

That sounds reasonable enough, if one has played many hours online during beta then the lack of offline mode shouldn't really really be a problem.

If you mention any problems with the game: "It's beta! No one has seen or played the real game, so stop complaining!"

If they drop a promised feature you bought into the game for: "You've played the game, so stop complaining!"

    Yeah, gotta love it.

when i first heard this i thought they were getting rid of the "solo" option, and thought it was a very bad move. however, now i understand that's not the case. they are just removing the option to play the game without having an internet connection.

....are there still people that play games without an internet connection?

hmmm online mode only, what about lag, service problems. Will it become another item shop must purchase to be competative or a monthly sub placed?

If Frontier had owned up in good time they could have avoided this fiasco, instead they chose the greedy route. I will never trust them again.

When I hear him use the word "Vision" that gives me flash backs of Brad McQuaid and his "Visions"

FUncom putting the FU in fun since 1993.

The treating of refunds on an individual basis is wrong. Backers fall into one for three or four groups: Kickstarter/backer, Alpha/Beta purchaser, & pre-order.

What they're doing is looking at each player/tester to see if they've downloaded "the game" & then issuing refunds to those who haven't touched it. The game isn't even out yet, only pay for test builds. It's a thinly diguised attempt at fleecing people.

This kind of decision always poses the question, do they have the servers and infrastructure to be able for everybody around the world to play the game?

Going to laugh pretty hard on release day when nobody can log in or there is unplayable lag due to the traffic.

For players outside of the US, will it actually be playable at all due to the terrible lag?

I think its valid for a plethora of reasons. I travel and oft times dont have online connections but still want to play my games I have purchased.
