Open Source Players Version of SWG

How many other developers are there in here?

Has anyone ever proposed the idea of us creating our own open source version of pre CU galaxies?

It may take us a couple of years, but i think it would be excellent idea. Am sure theres enough of us out there with previous MMO development experience. Once the application was ready the changes could then be decided by the community itself rather than the great evil SOE. The hosting wouldnt be much a problem either i dont think, lots of us have server sitting idle that would more than run a instance of the game.

Anyone any thoughts? maybe this has been proposed before.

Nice idea. I would love to see something like that happen.

    BUT...

It'll never happen and you should know why ::::33::

The organisation of it all would be quite difficult but i think its achievable. With a task this large you have to ignore the voice in your head with the difficulties and just grind away at it. Though i guess there would be a lot of aurguments as what era of swg should be recreated. i myself would like to see it back to as it was in mid to late 03, no holocrons and make jedi not a grindable process but instead a system in which the developers/community leaders would occasionally select a player they felt worthy of the profession. I felt the game was on track back then, the problem was the jedi grind shouldnt have been the way it was or announced. At that point a large amount of the players stopped role playing and just became obsessed with grinding professions and from there it was doomed. I think a community developed version can save a lot of the time and problems that the soe version had because we can just avoid what they did wrong. There could also potentially be a few trademark issues, but nothing that couldnt be worked around.

It would be nice if they released the source code.

If your talking about redesigning, why not use all the same systems but take the Star Wars out. Would make it perfectly legal. I do animations/models, could work on a few here and there if I have the time. Call it "Galaxies: The Outer Rim" and base it on the fringes of the SW space where very little is recognizable. The rebels become the Insurgents, the Empire becomes The Sydicate or something. Change all the names to protect the innocent. Make all the models similar but different to avoid trademark issues. But all the game systems would be the same. I'm pretty sure they can't do anything about us ripping off their prof system as long as we change names here and there.

I would guess that the odds of that happening are about the same as that of a human surviving in a vaccum environment without any equipment.  LucasArts owns SWG.  They even shut down websites that take too much liberty with their artwork.... let alone code for their game.

    /looks at SWG code base
    /equip pasta spoon

Even with a Pre-CU enviroment, I wouldn't want to tackle that mess.

Thisis what I suggested a while back - take the game and strip out ref to SW. With a decent creative mind, you could create a 'lore' to support the game and use the pre-CU as a basis for combat and crafting, toon design etc etc. Then add some balancing to the combat, armour and buffs and voila, a great gameimage

That MIGHT work... depends how a copyrite or hacking laws would apply to the code itself.  Unless you basically rewrite it to avoid that too.

It will have to be a rewrite. I think it would be more hassle adapting the existing code and theres no way soe and lucasarts would hand it over anyway.

We need to do this!. SWG is as good as dead, those that disagree are in denial. SWG cannot come back from the damage done without a complete overhaul which would make the last 2 years of their development a total waste of money and time. Even if it was terminated it would be at least 2008+ before any SWG2.

after reading a little on the swgemu.com forums, it sounds like these guys are a bunch of punks, they are already blabbing about how their gonna Ban accounts if whatever happens. They are already over using their power, might end up worse than SOE running the dam thing. Wait til bugs and exploits pop up-there gonna get eaten alive. Plus SOE will be on them the instant they go "live". And i see no actual hard proof that this Emu is actually gonna happen, just one big forum talking about an emu, who knows if it is true. This would extremely hard to pull off.
