If Trion did not know all this was going to happen they were incompetent for not doing enough research and still incompetent for not addressing the issues now.
The issues with the game, are not really Trion's fault. What is their fault is the arrogance with which they chose to publish third party games, thinking it was easy money. They really didnt know what they were getting into, and thought that it was easy.... which was proven wrong.
They've probably made more than they made in years. Remember it was said that Trion was given 150 million to get started, to make 3 games. 2 of those 3 failed, one before launch. They had to do something.

Hmmm are you Scapes? The rhetoric is so similar.
No. But I have been in his position.... and it can be tough. The only thing that they can really do is be honest about the situation, and set player expectations. They may not be able to fix the problems, or avoid more like this in the future.... but at least the players should know what to expect.

Trion is not making much on this... most of the money goes to XL, as they are the IP holder. I would not be surprised if Trion ends up dropping ArcheAge after a year (depending on contract requirements) because it does not pay for itself over time.
Trion has gone from running their own business, to working for XL, and even though it may have seemed like a good deal, they are finding out how difficult it is.... and that it is a low paying job.
While I only played Archeage for a few hours and course that was F2P.
I did like the graphics of Archeage but the gold spammers got to me. You add one to your block list and two seconds later you got to block another and so on. At this point I don't see my self playing Archeage anytime soon.
There is better F2P games out there for people to enjoy and play.
I asked for a refund within my first 30 days during the $150 founder's pack alpha. I asked for it on the grounds that they claim the game is a sandbox, and its not. Its a theme park. They refused, and I said I would speak to my credit card company to see if i had grounds for a chargeback since the product was not as claimed. They relented and refunded me.
As far as Scott Hartsmann goes...I've done business with him for years. Coming from SOE he has a dislike for freemium and has seen the value subs bring which is why he left Trion before. They reached out to bring him back as CEO because there was no other North American with the experience in the industry willing to come and try and right the sinking ship. He is trying his best, but in this day and age being a publisher only does not work. Customers expect changes quickly, and things that take servers offline should not take days to fix, due in large part to having to wait for the developer to fix it then send over the fixes.
Since they made Rift they can do that for that title, but the are boned for Archeage. And ultimately it will be Archeage that dooms the company to bankruptcy. Hopefully they can find a way out of their contract and focus their resources on their existing titles instead.
I have not played since launch but I am curious about the state of the game. Are the servers still full? Do you still get server queue trying to log in?

When the servers are actually up, no. They don't really even get to high any more.

Ironically, Archeage may well be the game that saves Trion financially. It certainly looks like the Cash Shop and APEX is extremely active, given the amount of stuff being sold for gold on the AH.
The rash of cost-cutting measures recently introduced, combined with the healthy income from AA may set them right for their next round of investment funding...
With me, it's got nothing to do the AA the game, and everything thing to do with how by buying the $150 alpha pack for AA, I was magically charged for a 6 month Rift sub, I gave Trion the benefit of the doubt (shit happens) But then last October I was charged 6 months again. I'm still waiting to have this charge straightened out.
I don't bitch about the money I spend. But I'll be damned if I'm going to have a Company spend it for me.
The only thing Trion can actually be blamed for is the issues with the servers. The game itself is not theirs, so all the hacking / exploits can be blamed on XLGames. Some people love to spend money, if they have disposable income, they will waste it. This game is a whale's dream. Same with cheaters, some people just love to cheat and exploit in MMO's. Both of these groups have made Trion a lot of money.
With all the problems this game has, people still play it. Which, I would think, is a giant sign of what gamers want: sandbox without spreadsheets.

Judging by the amount of money players appear to be pouring into AA, I'd say what players apparently want is closer to: "sandbox without spreadsheets and with a well-stocked Cash Shop"....
-Rift "not in Azeroth anymore" circling the drain even before StormLegion, forced to go F2P and now relying on lockbox gambling since nobody wanted to sub
Haha - Rift made Trion over 100million as a sub game, it made way more as F2P
- the utter failures that were End Of Nations and Defiance in their own respective ways
End of nations is gone - Defiance is still running and making bank - interesting definition for failure on your part. Also keep in mind Defiance cost was very small because SyFy paid 50%
-copying Cubeworld and naming it Trove
Thia is so wrong I feel emberassed for you Trove and Cubeworld have nothing in common other than cube voxels - did you even play either game ever?
-more than one round of lay offs-
So did every game studio including Zenimax, SoE, NcSoft.... you name it, welcome to game industry
- closing of San Diego, since Defiance couldn't carry it's own studio
Cost cutting measure - they cut the bloat to keep spending under control, it was financially a brilliant move
-the company probably dodging bankruptcy by a fraction of an inch
This is pure slander with no evidence - things have turned around for Trion big time under Hartsman financially - the previous CEO and exec team were running the company into the ground
they eventually realized that making games is not their strongest department.
And yet they keep making games..... again you are way off base
So why not rather publishing games of other studios? Sounds like easy and quick cash for which you neither have to do sh*t nor care in any way -and in fact AA has been just all that for Trion. Didn't work out so well with Crytek and Warface though, as Crytek likely saw the writings on the wall back then.
Again pure speculation about Warface - you do know that the game is not doing well at all, and Crytek is in financial dire straits? So maybe Trion saw the writing on the wall - as Warface would have been a loss.
there are absolutely zero facts in this post so this is no better than anything else here. Either bring proof or don't just add to the hyperbole.
I tried playing AA. It was a Ok game, nothing exceptional. Had some game breaking aspects
1.player housing lots were gone within a week and farms.
2 gold spammers in every channel.
3 long Q
haven't logged in in awhile, the Q thing may be fixed with dwindling pop.
But alas, without it being a above average game, these 3 things are game breakers.
Played:SWG(pre NGE/CU sucked)Yep its true, anyone who quit SWG because of the NGE/CU missed out on a much better combat system. DCUO, Fallen Earth, STO, The Secret World. Battlefield series. Planetside 2. Still playing SWG.

You should have seen the SOE beating for SWG on the CU/NGE. And that game ran live for 8 years. Cancelled and revived by hard core coder gamers.

Sometimes people do something so stupid that a point needs to be made, in order to ward off others from making the same mistake. Trions error was to take on third party publishing.... without understanding how it actually works. Many other (larger) companies have made this same mistake, but were able to sweep it under the rug... so no one noticed. Now we have a more visible example to point too... so that others will take heed in the future.
This thread is not really looking for actual discussion, but is a thinly veiled bash Trion thread. While having a negative view of a game or company is fine, include some substance and why for people to actually discuss.
Instead of X company sucks, try 'company did x and failed to do y'.

Yep, they gambled...
...and won.

Trion lost

Trion's loss not mine.

1. If AA had a sub only server, I would play it.
2. The only "gambling" going on is players buying "founders packs", so dumb.
