[Preview] The Secret World: Issue 10 Nightmare in the Dream Palace Preview

The Secret World issue 10: Nightmare in the Dream Palace is live, and we recently had the chance to run around the other side of Tokyo in a look at the brand new content. When we last left issue 9, there had been a huge explosion that conveniently reduced the quarantine wall that had been blocking off one side of Tokyo from the other, to more of an inconvenience than an obstacle. Issue 9 worked to lay down the foundations of new systems and new strategies, specifically having to do with Aegis.

Very good review, to the point.

It's however pretty sad a major update of TSW only adds several, though solid, game play for the players.

I am weary from the game, but the story still tickles me. I am absolutely in love and fascinated by this issue! The longevity though.. I am playing this game more or less like a single player RPG.

I just got to Tokyo last night, after buying to Issue 10 CE lol. Not sure if it's my build or what, but man that place is brutal! Loving the challenge of the area myself.

as long as they dont revise their combat system (its boring and repetitive) the best stoires and quests in MMO land cant help the game much...

Adding passive stuff like Aegis does nothing for the combat system

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

The combat is fabulous. How come YOU defend static, motionless, rooted-to-the-ground combat in WOW, and at the same time, bitch about AGILE, mobile, and VERY FAST and FLEXIBLE combat system of TSW? That doesn't make ANY sense.

Oh, it actually does, you just go on what's popular and have no OPINION on your own and bitch about a game YOUR HARDLY EVEN PLAYED. The combat in TSW is as fast or slow or responsive or whatever, as you make it, if you dig deep enough into the game, and not just scratch the surface.

    REALITY CHECK

I agree, totally a rumour by ppl who have never played TSW properly.

I have never understood the scorn ppl aim at TSW combat, sure it can be 111123 etc BUT so are all mmo's.  If you understand and play TSW you know that the many builds and how you have to adapt your build and gear to the area/zone/dungeon make it very much more involved than most mmo's.

This new Issue is awesome and  rounds out Kaiden very nicely.   If you play; /tell CultOfXtc in-game if you need a friend or PM me for a buddy key to test it out. (Then /tell me).

Great game, great community and great Developers.

Out of all honest, as much as I love TSW, he is actually right. The only thing that worn me out of TSW is the combat. I am almost mostly .5.5s and couldn't progress further due to the lack of high end tier players.

I've read from numerous places talk about how wrong TSW combat is. Someone pointed out that, in lower gears and even higher gears if you don't know what you're doing, you feel like dealing no damage to the mobs. It's true because how TSW combat is and it makes combat very less awarding. It's the builders and consumer cycle, and in a solo if you missed a single hit consumer, say glanced or blocked or evaded, you just feel that you have to restart the whole process again and it's just not fun. The skill build aspect sure is cool, but maybe it's mainly for PvPs. Say, in dungeon, most niche damage output build is set in stone, either EF a channeler, or massive crit on a molten, or maybe, just a maybe third alternative that I haven't seen yet, there's not much difference for it; at least if your goal is to max damage output and breeze thru the dungeon. Even in scenarios you are meant to do certain things beside the min/max: dispel, purge. There's few choices for them but there's only one or two are actually viable. And around these you have to pick out rest of your build, etc. etc.. And since I mentioned PvP lemme do a very very, very fast rundown for you: it's not fun, too gear / number (as in people) dependent.

Don't get me wrong, I still love TSW; here's some questions and answers for you, tho:

Do I love the game? Y

Do I still play the game? N

Do I still consider it is a good game? Y

Do I want to see the game shutdown? N

Will I recommend the game? Y

Cant be the combat that makes this game fail. Final fantasy reborns combat is almost identical. Guild wars 2 is close to identical, also almost all mobas are identical to this combat system. Maybe it they should of made it simpler, instead of 7 keys only 4, and instead of letting you choice what you want to use, force you to do classes.

I actually like the combat my self, and i like the group runs. I only made it to the first one in that motel, but it was lots of fun running it, reminded me slightly of everquest. Where every one had to work as a team, to beat the bosses. The bosses are fun to with different things you have to do to beat them.

As for being slow, stationary combat, I am gonna have to say you havent played the game at all. If you just stand still your just gonna die over and over again. This combat system takes alot of practice to master. It reminds me of everquest in that aspect, because if you get some one who cant figure it out, they can wipe the whole group out.

The combat system is pretty much similar to Age of Conan, where you had to constantly move as melee / ranged class (except mages). Dodge, evade, position behind for sertain skills, etc.

Same in TSW. If you just stand still, you die. Simple as that.
