What happened to me

I use to love playing MMOs and downloading the latest ones and trying them out. Now I don't even have the effort to click sites that offer game downloads.

Did I grow out of them, or maybe its because of all the crap they are releasing now. Or maybe its because of the types of games to be released, all new games that follow the same old boring mechanics.

I think I grew out of them, i started playing MMOs in my late teens (Ultima Online), now I am in my mid 30s.

I can't wait for VR to kick in, maybe that will get me to play MMOs again.

Imo, a lot of games released in recent years (maybe the last 10?) just aren't good as games used to be. Again imo, I think f2p kinda killed the genre. Not because f2p is really bad, but because every person with a comp in their mother's basement is trying to hop in and milk what they can. The production of more games trying to offer better features than the competition forces already good games to conform and gain players. I will always prefer p2p games but I think the model needs to be more realistic to meet the actual schedules of today's playerbase. If p2p was actually pay for the time that you actually play, I think more people would be comfortable with these types and the ones that tried and failed at p2p models would've been more successful. F2P isn't exactly a failure, but you do get what you pay for and many people forget that. Not to mention that companies are getting greedier and greedier each year. The genre is honestly less about producing good games and more about finding something to milk before something else is put out.

Edit: In short, I don't think its you, I think its more of the quality of the work being produced.

I was wondering the same thing myself. My favorite MMO got canceled two years ago and I haven't really found anything to take its place. I blame the loss of community and decent games. Now things feel like a gear grind. I don't know if I'd blame f2p, but there has been a greater shift to solo content. I used to solo all the time in my old MMO but there were times where I needed help. With the last few MMOs I tried, I only needed help a handful of times. Having friends to run missions with made the game more fun, now it just makes it easier.

Alot of the games are copied game mechanics. Thats why when a new one is released I am always very hesitant to try it. Like for instance, when Dragon Prophet was in open beta, I was hesitant to download but I did anyway, and its basically a copy of previous game style, with the addition of having a dragon.

Final Fantasy ARR is another example, its just the same shit done over again, even the combat is boring.

I think what I want is some completely new and unique MMO idea. And sandbox would be a plus.

I'm gonna buy Elite Dangerous on the 16th hoping its something new, I wish they would do a real open beta so we can all try before we buy.

So there is 3d, isometric and side scroller, along with browser style interface types. Is there room for anymore.

I will have to wait for Virtual Reality to come out to have a completely new experience, and you what that will get old fast too.

You got old, welcome to the club Bob.

Also you might have grown out/got bored of the same old same old... and need someting new. I myself can't stand the 'classic' type mmorpg's anymore, but I can't wait for Dungeon Fighter Global to go live.

Hymmm on a different not, I've been a member since 2003, and this is my first post.. so um.. hi all? ;)

It also depends too on what you want from a game in the long run. When I try a new game, I usually look at the population and so much I can tolerate the combat system to do it on a consistent basis. In that regard, games like WoW are kinda ok since the combat system can be bland but it can also work well for extended periods of time depending on type of player you are. Luckily, there are some interesting games coming out next year (imo) but then again, some of the previously released games were just ruined due to poor management, so you never really know until a game is released. Anyway, it doesn't really cost you anything except time to download a game or wait for a trial to test something out before deciding to invest, but what everyone values things differently. Some value time more than money and vice verse.

The "Players" have changed or been drowned out by new players with different tastes.
That's whats really driving how these games are made.

    Bingo.

People can say the games are worse, but they are all making more money than the older ones. More people wanting to play worse games doesn't make sense. The games just appeal to the masses.

it is a big pile of poor leadership in the gaming and Hardware sectors.

Gaming has advanced terribly slow, you would think that means super cheap Hardware to run these games with ease but not the case, poor coding and game design also to blame.

You know what developers look for?NOT creativity but what have you been a part of in past releases,so ya experience.Experience does not mean anything, other than you have worked on other games.

What i feel is developers need a real gamer non geek coder to design the games and then let the geeks make it happen. They NEED to LISTEN to creative ideas and quit just hiring some guy who worked on WOW or for Blizzard or for SOE or whatever other developer.

Right now the market is so incredibly predictable,Blizzard makes money selling any crap ,space games are still an untapped market,Moba's are washed up beyond Dota and LOL because gamer's want the MOST popular not the best.RPG's are always solo designs with linear questing, really absolutely nothing creative has stalked this market for over 10+ years.

    Basically that.

I can't play tab target, hotkey based MMOs anymore. They're so horribly dull and boring it just drives me away.  FFXIV's re-release ruined the game for me (or well, the combat overhaul patch to the vanilla version did).

As for VR, I doubt that will come to the MMO space for quite a number of years.  Being able to support the tech on such a massive scale is going to be a problem I think.

Hell, maybe in 50 years we'll get some .hack//sign stuff going. That would be amazing, but it seems too fantasy at present.

I'm with you.  So much of the same shit has been pushed in the last deacde (see: since WoW came out) its really depressing.

Yep. Plus, add in all of the cash shop nonsense going on now as well as the general dumbing down.

Me and you both, OP. And honestly, I don't think its because we "dislike" them anymore, but I think that there hasn't been anything really innovative that could capture our attention for years and years. There were great games released in the last few years, but honestly, they have either died out, or don't offer much at the end of the rainbow. I still have the want-to play the MMO's I just cannot find one that makes me wanna just keep going and going.

In the valley of death I cast a shadow to block out the sun. I am a monster accepting what i?ve become. My faith was drowned in a sea of doubts. Now the thorn littered road its my only way out so I push on. Iron willed. Demonized. Tongue forged in fire. Hate in my eyes. Celestial supremacy replaced with gloom. Inhale aggression and exhale doom

It's not you it's that MMO devs are garbage for the past 10 years. Maybe WoW was ahead of it's time but it's still making everyone else look bad to this day. MMO's stopped being about the game and more about how they can leech every dollar they can until you realize you've been wasting your time.

Games are the past, Freemium is the future. The good news is single player games aren't quite as corrupt by the the nickel and dime mentallity as the MMO market but they're getting there. Thanks Destiny

I remember playing Baldur's Gate and then Morrowind. Wow it would have been fun to play Morrowind with another person!

Then I started DAOC, and a couple of friends and I played and it was a blast! It was fantastic, to share the world with another player!! RvR was great! Then came ToA and the gear grind. Gotta log in on time, stay on for the hours it takes to run the raid. Sigh.

So I switched to CoH, a new experience and one of my favorites. But then it became a gear grind too. So I switched to PoTBS and that was fun for a while. Ryzom was fun too, as a change. The shine of playing with other people steadily got duller. LoTRO was fun until it too became a grind.

Finally I wanted the "old school" feel again, and played Vanguard, until it too became a gear grind requiring hours to play at a time. The newness of playing with other people is gone now, replaced with the dread of a grind. Raids have become a hassle. The game closed down and I have no desire to do that again.

Nowadays I buy new games just so I can experience their worlds. I still enjoy living in a virtual world, exploring, fishing, etc. But I avoid the mandatory gear grinds and most of my old friends have moved on. F2P games with cash-grab shops repel me. If I'm interested in a story RPG, I'll play Skyrim or something.

    The thrill is gone.

VR sucks for MMOs because the current iterations (display strapped 2 inches from your eyes on your face) SUCKS for long play sessions.

That's the basic problem - MMOs are often played for 3-4 hours - no VR display is built for that yet as most people start getting nausea and headache after about 20-30min, also the eye strain

So you've tried them all and are now an expert on VR?

I felt the same way. Then i went back to the old games UO and AC and had a total blast again.  The old games aren't made mindless for the kids. That's what makes them fun for me.. I'm not just a drone behind the keyboard following an arrow to the next face roll =)
