Do you also find it strange that the main protagonists in fantasy or SF books are almost always human? Maybe there's a clue in there somewhere about why humans are also the most popular race in MMOs... Identification.

Sure, identification is seen as very important. But do you need to be a woman to identify with the women who is the heroine? Do you need a male figure with her so that you can "identify"? Do you need to be a child to identify with a child? Or an adult to identify with an adult?
You are right that this is seen as an essential in all forms of media, you have to buy into the hero after 5mins playing/watching. But think about it and you realise that you can identity with anything that thinks in a vaguely human way. From Vulcans to Tuskan Raiders, from ET to Frankenstein. When writers let their imaginations flow we follow them. But when studio heads and editors start worrying about identification, we end up with humans. For that reason we will never see a MMO that does not have humans in it.
For iRohan, for me the most boring race would be the "healers" since I do not like the idea that I'm always there to support, I'm like more of a hitter so I've decided to change to guardian, assassin and templar.
There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own. -- Herman Melville
Played:SWG(pre NGE/CU sucked)Yep its true, anyone who quit SWG because of the NGE/CU missed out on a much better combat system. DCUO, Fallen Earth, STO, The Secret World. Battlefield series. Planetside 2. Still playing SWG.
Unexceptional stats and abilities followed by having the plainest mediocre looking armor and weapons (in comparison with other races). MMO's usually regard Humans as the "safe pick" during character creation and try to avoid marginalizing them by giving a larger selection of classes to choose from or faster experience gain.
I normally don't choose Human unless I must however, I do understand why they're a popular choice...

I usually find the male human to be the most boring characters in any given game. But in the end, it comes down to animations.
For example, I can't stand the way the elves in Rift run. So, human character it is.
I picked the Bahmi in Rift, way more interesting than the humans.

Elves, they're skinny humans with long ears.. I mean really.. Wow.. The fantasy.
I get why people often pick humans, because people like to be able to relate to their character.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Vulcans, aren't they really just elves?
Just sayin.

Yeah Right. If the creator know that there will be a boring race, then why did they create it. Again. It's "Perception".

Humans.
