[Preview] Elite: Dangerous: The Entire Galaxy, Yours For The Taking

BMunchausenBMunchausen Staff WriterMMORPG.COM Staff Posts: 400

Thirty years ago, programmer David Braben created the ground-breaking, but controversial space trading game, Elite, a game that sparked many a debate among computer enthusiasts, and served as a precursor to games like Wing Commander: Privateer and EVE Online. Next Tuesday, Braben's releasing Elite: Dangerous, an ambitious sequel that could very well be the next ground-breaker/debate-maker, and I was fortunate enough last week, to get an early look at it.

    I'm having a blast with it !

Bugs and all, the game is good and very fun. I recommend playing with a flightstick.

If you enjoyed the original Elite games, you'll be real at home in this new version. If you've only ever played a "space-MMORPG" like "Earth and Beyond", I'd recommend doing a bit of research before leaping into E:D. It's probably not what you're expecting...

    Just like the Asminov incident.......lol

Which was never corrected even though it was pointed out over and over etc lmao

To the new people coming to play for the first time the 16 I suggest getting use to the controls and entering/exiting stations etc in solo mode first unless you want to feel like fish in a barrel!!!

Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

Cute game, fooled around with it a bit and had some fun,  but let's be serious this game is not a space sim, it does not simulate anything like you would experience in space unless of course space was filled with air.  I did not like the way it docks, that would all be handled by computers, no space station would risk letting someone try to bring a ship in manually.

Space sim is a genre... you just described most of them.

im just wondering if it doesnt get boring fast (what im always wondering with space sims) - cause your  basically shooting at stuff very far away you can hardly see and then move on to do it again...it just seems a bit repetitive and graphically "understated" because of that...on the other hand lots of people seem to really like it.

To anyone that remembers the original elite death by crashing into space stations while docking was a frequent and frustrating occurrence. In the original you could buy a docking computer and obtain a cloaking device. I think the longevity of the game will depend on how interesting the ship and ship upgrades are. Elite had an invading alien race and some of the better missions revolved around confronting them. Looking forward to trying it.

I never played the original Elite but I did play its sequel Frontier for a while it was quite a fun game . Actually when I first saw EvE online I thought it was an Elite sequel at first . From what I understand Elite Dangerous is a multiplayer version of Elite but it has no chat channels so player interaction will be limited in it . It sounded rather good until I looked into it further . I don't think its something I would enjoy over a long period .

When buying a game for the PC I expect the controls to play perfect using keyboard & mouse. My understanding of E:D is that it is only enjoyable using a flightstick, which is a huge gamebreaker for me.

You can play the game quite happily with KB+M in the same way you can play Assetto Corsa or Street Fighter fine with KB+M. Having the correct peripheral can make each game much more enjoyable but is by no means a requirement.

Almost as if they have develeoped a great engine and they now need to write a game to go with it.

I enjoyed many hours in Frontier Elite but I doubt it would be enough to keep me interested today.

Lots play with keyboard and mouse, Xbox360 controller or HoTaS, its a flight sim (kinda) so will always feel better with a HoTaS, throw in the Oculas for the ultimate experience.

So what's the deal with this game?  Is it considered "retail ready" on the 16th?
