Crowd funding and skepticism

crysentcrysent Member UncommonPosts: 841
There seems v to be no shortage on ambitious promises coming from the small dev teams working on the multitude of crowd funded games. My question is: has even a single one delivered on its promises yet?

I was reading the very ambitious goals the star citizen devs have set for their game, and could not help but wonder how realistic their ideas are. .?

From the repopulation to camelot unchained and star citizen, there is no shortage of wild, ambitious, and amazing ideas, but most of these would seem incredibly difficult for even the largest studios to pull off.

How likely is it that any of these studios will be able to deliver a finished, functioning product that will live up to the expectations they have set for themselves?

Mmmm, true, but let's see how it's doing n 6 months time.  There's an ever-growing trend for game companies to over-promise, over-hype and under-deliver.

    There was FTL.

And Wasteland 2 was one of the best RPGs of the year.

Camelot Unchained internal testing is going amazingly well.

    Divinity: Original Sin

    Trove

These two are the only ones I can think of that were released and turned out to be good games. They were both made by established game studios.

Oh, and Divinity: Original Sin is actually nominated for Game of the Year over at GameSpot.

I guess it really depends on on your measuring stick. It's actually very rare, especially now with Day1 patches, etc. that a game delivers in good, working order. If you feel like you can name one game that delivered on their promises, my ears are wide open.

While there has been some good games coming out of crowdfunding, we haven't seen any mmorpg's being released. Here's a list on a few crowdfunded products.

    • Elite: Dangerous is released tomorrow, but not sure how much of MMO concepts the game has. It should be great for elite fans.
    • Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues, is on steam early access, in a pretty rough alpha.
    • The repopulation is still stuck in alpha under NDA.
    • Pathfinder online has had couple of release dates for their alpha-like minimum viable product but haven't gotten it out.
    • Camelot unchained is scheduled for 2016.
    • Life is feudal: Your own module is out on steam early access.
    • Star citizen has their alpha dogfighting module out.
    • Albion online is in alpha.
    • Trials of ascension don't seem to go anywhere
    • Greed monger don't seem to go anywhere
    • Divergence online don't seem to go anywhere
    • Embers of caerus don't seem to go anywhere
    • Pantheon: Rise of the fallen is best described as popcorn worthy

My personal impression is that camelot unchained is the game that has the most potential of delivering an mmorpg experience closest to their promises. If you can create DaoC on a $2.5M budget, you should be able to deliver a 3-faction PvP game on a $7M budget. With that said, most of the known things are concepts.

I can't give a fair impression on any of the other games.

Trove isn't an indie game... It was developed and published by Trion.

Divinity: Original Sin isn't either. I thought we were talking about all crowd funded games. Trove did a lot of crowd funding using their own website during alpha.
