Looking for MMO that still has a lower level "community".

Hi everyone,

Sadly, I know the MMORPG world is struggling right now, but I'm wondering what/if there's anything that's quality you all are playing that still has some community in the lower levels and has some adhesive to the story/lore (ie: not just designed as a progressive level system with pixels in the way of you and cap). I'm not looking to blow through content and get to endgame - quite the contrary, actually. Did that in WoW over the years and I think I'm just ready to try and enjoy something with good folks.

I'm game for PvE or PvP both, I can honestly get on fine with either one if the system is functional.

Tried to jump in to EQ2 just recently, and while I want to love it... and the lore itself just begs me to play it, being alone all the way to current expansion just isn't going to work for me.

Thanks!

-Seraph

Maybe try FFXIV? Content is played at all levels because all characters can level all classes, albeit use them, separately. There are also rewards for high levels to get brought down to low levels and do that content. Your mileage may vary with the story, but I've heard more positive than negative. While it's P2P, there's a 14 day trial before you commit, and you can get pretty far in that time.

GW2 does a great job of keeping its huge world evenly populated. Your char's level is adjusted to meet the area automatically, and it is very seamless.

You could try Lord of the Rings online.

One does see players shouting for groups in Bree which is a lower level area. I can't guarantee how even the population will be leveling up but I was surprised to see life in Bree. This was on the Brandywine server though I'm sure other servers might have equally lively populations.

Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

You may want to try SWToR. It does have a really good story and lore (if you like Star Wars, or if you like Space Ninja Wizards...). There is a pretty huge chunk of reasons that people roll alts constantly, so every time I've gone back to level a new character, the areas are decently populated. And if you really enjoy the levelling game, there are 8 class stories to go through, so plenty of smelling roses and daisy picking.

You could always try EVE. But that is usually a big step for an avatar gamer.

I just came back after 3 or so years away and it feels too crowded for me to be honest. But then again I was there in the beginning.

    Nope, just keep moving on.

There's a disturbing trend on a lot of smaller MMOs now to be released as a stand-alone version that connects to various dedicated servers. Due to the nature of the servers, you're going to find lots of lower levels, but there's also little cohesion to the overall game since server admins can make or change rules on a whim.

Then there are the older/F2P games like LotRO which, when I tried a year+ ago was a graveyard up to the higher levels. Sapped the fun out of an MMO, being the only one in a zone trying to level up. Fallen Earth also has this same problem.

Then there are the "ancient" MMOs that have been out for over 10 years and people still talk about. The problem with them is the amount of "bloat" that's been stacked upon over and over again. DAoC is one example, It used to be a pretty easy to use/understand interface, but after trying to keep up with WoW, they've just added so much, that you need a manual to decipher it all. EVE Online is another victim of this; it was already a complicated game to start up (I was in beta and thought it was overly complicated then) but after about 10 years of updates, you'd be better off getting a graduate degree from college then trying to read and comprehend even half of the game anymore.

The only games where people seem to be equally spread at lower levels are the F2P action/shooter games like World of Tanks or War Thunder.

If you're daring... and this is only if you're willing to overlook many negative aspects of the game and its company, you can check out Uncharted Waters Online. It as a pretty expansive "newbie" base being free to play but remains playable to much higher skill levels while still being rather populated thanks to being released on Steam fairly recently. It also has the added bonus of being one of the only MMOs I've ever cared about reading the quest dialog for because A) there are some interesting stories being told and B) there are no golden "!" to follow so you can easily get hopelessly lost at sea.

  • ESO maybe?

    Thanks for the responses everyone.

I may give FFXIV and LOTRO (another) try. I would try out ESO, but I'm not entirely sure how that's going to fly on my rig, and I have a 2 year old at home, so diapers > new gaming PC obviously. :)

If they'd (Zenimax) just give a 7 day limited trial or something and I liked it/could run it without issue, I'd buy in for sure. Don't know why they won't.

Didn't you try the agnostic dungeons in Everquest2? If not I suggest forgetting all these lesser games and just do it,you can join them from level 20 all the way to level 89.also on thursday they are making it so that by the time you hit level 90 you will have at the very least 280 aa.

Trust me there is no better game, you already said you love the lore, just queue for an agnostic dungeon! :)
