I see people keep talking about survival vs zombie . It not my liking , but it sure interest how people will make Survival (+zombie) MMO .
Or prefer how one should be.
So what's your zombie survival game ?
My survival (+zombie) MMORPG : It a game you must survival .
The goal of this game is keep your character's survival time highest while "exterminate" other player's survival time .
The highest "survivor" (live longest) will get "reward" each months (or weeks)
You need to "eat" to keep your character "living" but in a ruin city , find food isn't easy.
Then there are zombies moving around hunting the "survivors" .
There are limit how many items you can carry and equip ,
to keep surviving , you need to hide your item (food , weapon) , but the items not safe in open world , they can be taken by other players or decay.
There are survivor NPC , they will sell you item if you manage to get a hand on the items they want .
Some survivor NPC will attack you if you don't met they requirement .
It not fun to play "human" only . So i add zombie ... you can play zombie to hunt human survivor NPC , or human players.
As player need food to survival , zombies need human brainn ..... so time to eat....
You can eat other zombie , but they don't have brain , so only waste of time . And zombie will attack you if you start eating too much zombies .
While player can equip item , zombie can't . So the longer they survival , the more they eat , the more they body change , and stronger they become . Some will gain special "ability"
As zombie grow strong , player do . They will gain "ability" if they manage to kill "ability" zombies .
All player will start as "human" ,
to become zombie , they need to eat "zombie meat" .
"player zombie" wear equipped item when they will living but can't use the weapon .
When players (human or zombie) dead , they will become "ghost" for minutes , then get spawned in random place in city as "human" again .
There are guns type in this game , but there are many way to craft "equipment" to use things around you.
And to protect your "good" items , you can place traps to create dungeon .
some trap can kill you , for example , you kidnap a zombie and trap it inside hided "good" room . People who enter will get eaten , and if you careless enter , it end for you too.
I forget something importance.
When you log out , your PC still around in game world , they are easy prey .
But don't worry , after you log out for 30s or 60s , your PC will auto teleport to "save" place (hide place) . So you don't have to find place to hide when you need to log out ASAP .
But it not totally safe , there are change you will see a ghost when you log in . There are no safe place in this game lol .

I don't like survival game.
I would much rather play a straight action (shooter?) game with zombies, or even a apocalytical RPG with zombies.
I like survival of the "live in the wilderness and craft your way up from sticks and stones to a ranch or castle" variety, but I'm not much of a horror fan, and not at all an FPS fan (which many zombie games are about little more than shooting things). Here's a design for a not-quite-zombie game I'd like to play though:
3rd person POV, no guns in the game. You start as an ordinary human with a t-shirt, jeans, sneakers, and a backpack. The easiest weapon to acquire is a tree branch usable as either a club or a construction mat - they are lying around everywhere. Throwable stones too. Higher level weapons are mainly swords or mutant body parts like claws. Gameplay is a cross between Bioshock 1 and Spore with added crafting like Xsyon or A Tale In The Desert; your goal is to eat pretty much everything you encounter to get points to spend on mutating yourself in beneficial ways, while scavenging materials to build yourself a personal fortress. There are two main NPC factions - those who believe in using technology, remaining human, and recovering the past vs. those who believe in mutating themselves and leaving the bad past behind in favor of a radically different future.
Philosophy of MMO Game Design
pvp means replayability. And most of these zombie games don't have story lines as such, although some single player ones do.
You need to create lore, and other time consuming stuff for PvE. PVP just figure out whether headshots kill in 1 or 2 hits and your more or less ready.
Watch Led Zeppelin, Darkfall Tribute
Watch Johnny Cash, Darkfall Tribute
Fortunately they don't.
Not really an MMO, more just multiplayer. But since I always wind up interacting with people more in this game, as far as I'm concerned, it's more of an MMO than most MMOs.
7 Days to Die.
It has everything I want in a zombie MMO.
If a developer wants to shoot themselves in the foot at ever obtaining a large number of players, they'll focus on pvp as the prime source of "content".
In a survival game, the time consuming "pve" portion is just the survival aspect. Make basic tools fairly easy to make, like put a rock together with two sticks and some type of a binding and blammo, hammer tool and weapon combined. Better tools are more difficult to make, but then also offer vastly better options. Early game food is scarce (due to lack of tools), water can be abundant but not clean (gotta boil it), but those aspects become a bit easier with time and tools. Eventually be able to make a farm to grow food and allow for the curing of meat so it doesn't decay as quickly. Give players the ability to dig a well where water is from a clean source, etc.
The cooperative pve portion could be in the building or rebuilding of towns. They would have to be destructible by zombies, especially basic structures, but with better tool and resources you could build formidable defenses. Over time and more activity in an area a horde of zombies could appear that is completely overwhelming by any known defense (basically a reset for the area), which promotes people being mobile (nomadic) and keeping population numbers down in singular areas as to not attract the ultimate horde of zombies.
Resources can be scarce, renewable over time but the better the material the longer time it takes to renew. So the "pvp" aspect becomes less about killing and more about resource control. Even then with the ultimate zombie horde looming, you can't just get and hold everything because you will be wiped out one day over the course of time.
Basically, you need a pve developer who isn't afraid of forcing people to start over at certain points.
So what's your zombie survival game ?
I love "7 Days to Die!"
Proud MMORPG.com member since March 2004! Make PvE GREAT Again!
While I agree with you about the game direction, a lot of the early classic Romero zombie films were really about the human interaction after the civilization's collapse. Zombies were just the iconic means for the collapse, and the wandering threats.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Because players don't have to waste time socializing with anyone?
There is no reason for players to work together. I don't know how it would be possible to make a zombie MMO (ZMMO) work without it becoming something other than a large multiplayer shooting match, and if this is the case, then why make it an MMORPG in the first place?
Zombies are just a type of monster. Any existing way that an MMO can work can be done with zombies substituted for whatever monsters they have. You could have WOZ, World of Zombii, with quests everywhere. Think outside the box, man!
Probably because zombies (like all npcs in any game where they are in similar strength to the player) are not a threat to any competent person. There is no need to work together unless the devs introduce gimmicks and overbuffs that force you to.

What I would like to see in a survival zombie game is:
1st it must be perma death
2nd it must be extreamly hard to start. New player life usualy 2-3 minutes. But once you have a game plan for your start position you might make it longer.
3rd make the game so it "is" posible to survive forever but making it there to a state of balance with the game world takes a lot of trial and error a great rng spike and good teamwork.
Also it must be full loot open world Pvp
7 Days to Die is awesome!
I've been playing the hell out of that game with some friends. I have a hard time imagining any zombie survival MMO will ever match that game's fun for me.
It'd be hard pressed to match all those sandbox features, and it'd probably involve having to deal with random douchebags in a full loot environment.
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

I agree, the one advantage I see for H1Z1 is that they have staff. They can throw resources at a problem. They have knowledge. They've done this dance before, so they likely have experts in any conceivable domain, meaning they can close knowledge gaps more quickly. I'm excited for both, though, although my kids are probably more excited than me.

MMOs are to me games that I want to play longtime.
Thus a survival MMO is not of my liking and I wouldnt bother to make one.
Also, I fail to see the point of games that only have zombies. Seriously, boring.
I think something like state of decay would get much more mileage as a "multiplayer game" instead of an mmorpg.
I don't think these types of games in general would translate well in to mmorpgs, people generally wont accept systems like permadeath that would be required to give death the meaning it deserves in this type of scenario.

All in All... because zombies aren't dangerous enough.
If zombies were more like 28 days later we would probably see more people working together. From what i'v seen so far zombies are just more of a nuisance rather than a threat...
I would definitely take a State of Decay, or just wait on Fortnite which looks promising too.

If you have Arma III you can download this fantastic mod: http://www.thezombieinfection.com/
That's my survival/zombie mmo
Is it similar to dayz? as it's on the arma engine.
I'm really hoping for Dayz to feel playable sometime in the future.
I'd love a survival zombie game like DayZ but on the source engine or whatever engine contagion is using.
I have played several survival games ( not just zombie ) and they are more or less kill other players before they kill you and not really about surviving. When it is like that it should just be an arena based shooter where you collect resources for points.
IMO survival games need factions as much if not more than other genres. Both sides could work together within their faction and know what to do and expect when running across players from the other faction.
Survival games can be so much more than the trash that is out there now.
