Rift or Tera?

raystantzraystantz Final Fantasy XI CorrespondentMember UncommonPosts: 1,237

I think I have it narrowed down to these two.. here was the criteria I started with.

1. Must be FTP,  with the ability to unlock most of, if not all content via in game means. Even if it takes far longer to do. I can't pay a monthly sub right now.

2. My gf and I will both be playing, so being able to do stuff together is a must.

3. There must be world pvp, and the option of battlegrounds. I don't care if the world pvp has meaning, just as long as its there and people are active in it.

4. I don't care that much about crafting, but side stuff to do is always fun ie housing, etc. My gf likes to decorate.

We were playing AA but we felt like the game was too oriented on crafting, and not enough of killing stuff/people. We both like world pvp, and it seemed to take forever to actually get to any. Feel free to sway me differently.

With that being said, I tried to narrow it down based on that, I've played literally EVERYTHING out there, but she's only ever played ESO and AA.

I'm leaning towards Tera, but when I played before I can't really remember why I left. Rift, was far too much like WoW when I originally tried it, and I was already so far into WoW that swapping to another game just like it seemed silly. I'm ready to give it a real try this time. I know both are F2P, but which way should we be leaning based on our criteria? Or maybe a different option all together?

Rift! Dimensions would be perfect for your girlfriend for decorating, and I think it's just a damn fine MMO all around. Rift has open world PvP on Seastone and Battle Grounds.

Tera was pretty and the combat was unique but overall the game itself seemed incredibly shallow to me. It did not hold my interest for very long. I wish I could comment on it's PvP but I did not make it that far.

If PvP is most important to you I would say play a MOBA personally the complaint in Rift is no PvP gear and best gear only from raids. I'm not super serious about PvP so the brief bit I've done was fun for me.

Tera is the best MMO on the market right now second to WoW, though I'm not sure what WoW has to offer over Tera besides world setting and lore. Tera has all the same core MMO features but with much better combat and graphics.

However, a lot of people have a problem with the aesthetics of Tera, even though it has one of the most beautiful game worlds, the characters are over sexualized and there's a race called the Elin which very much resembles a little girl. If you can get passed that and the eastern aesthetics of the game, then Tera is much better than Rift in practically every way.

The Rift devs have specifically stated that they are not interested in catering to PvPers at all in the game, the focus is PvE, and compared to Tera the PvE is a joke, Rift is not even as good as WoW. So if you want a PvE centric game that does it worse than WoW and Tera, with a pretty bland and dull looking world, with the worst race diversity I've seen in any game, then Rift is for you.

Tera simply has the best combat on the market, it also just received an expansion which came with a lot of quality of life improvements and a large boost in its already large population. Now would be a good time to start Tera.

Other than that, I can't think of any reason to play Rift over Tera or WoW, Rift is a worse version of WoW, and Tera does a few things better than WoW.

While world PvP is pretty meaningless in both games, if fun PvP is what you're after then there is no question that TERA is the better game. Not only is the combat far superior, but a lot of players actually value PvP in TERA. In Rift, it tends to be something most players simply ignore. There's a reason, after all, that RIFT only has one PvP server.

Now, if you're interested in having activities you can do aside from combat, then RIFT has TERA beat hands down. There are all sorts of things to collect, you can sit and fish all day, and the game's dimensions feature is practically a game on its own.

Personally, I'm partial to TERA. But that's because I'm primarily interested in getting together with a bunch of folks and killing stuff.

My suggestion is that you and your girlfriend download and try both games. Play them both, maybe on an alternating schedule, until you find that something that really gets you excited about one title or totally turns you off the other.

rift is a solid choice BUT some of the class specs are locked behind a pay wall. It does not mean you NEED them but yea. It has a good pvp system and quests to do together, not to mention you can mentor  to a persons lvl (if they are lower) tera is a bit different. there is nothing behind a paywall and imo the combat is a lot more action based, though it is a grind fest with little story that makes sense. Graphics are nice on it as well, and classes tend to compliment one another. I play (or have played both and enjoyed them as well. Tera has some PVP servers with open world pvp but and this is a big BUT, max levels enjoy killing those who are leveling. Then again it is like that in most pvp based games now days.

Rift would be my choice, it has it's issues, and some players are turned right off by them. Overall I believe it to have more content and more options than TERA. TERA you are locked into a class and play-style for the duration of your character's existence. Rift you can be anything (Tank, melee, ranged, healer, support) on one character, and very easily.

TERA's world and story are pretty but very bland. Just flat zones with groups of enemies to slaughter who just walk around aimlessly.

The PvP is more fun in TERA, but also much more imbalanced and completely gear dependant. Rift PvP is more focused on cookie-cutter builds, but gear isn't as much of a factor in instanced PvP. Open PvP is lacking in both games until Max Level.

TERA's engine is more optimized. Rift has world events at all levels. Tera has world events only at Max level.

Rift has dimensions which is the most decorative and creative housing in any MMO.

Both are F2P with no locked content locked behind a paywall.

Now Playing: Bless / Summoners War
Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile

TERA is my mmo choice.  En Masse is the best out there imo. I actually just recently subbed to it. Fate Of Auron expansion just launched so its a good time to join. I I tried Rift once but did not like it at all. TERA is a much better game then Rift.

Rift probably has more to it but I found Tera to be more fun.

    I prefer the combat.

Honestly its like comparing apples and oranges, and only you can decide which you are in the mood for. Both are decent games in their own right, but do many things vastly differently.

Specific to your criteria, I would have to guess you would like Rift much better. It suits more of the things you are looking for, which im guessing means more to you than all these people trying to tell you that Tera is better because of the combat. That wasnt even one of the things you said you were looking for.

To be frank, you will need to play Tera to see if its something you could even get into. The combat for some is the best part, and for others the worst. To be honest, the combat is the ONLY reason I wont play Tera. I find it completely lackluster, and more times than not its downright frustrating. You will either love it or hate it, and you will need to have hands on time, to decide for yourself which side you fall on.

Also as others have mentioned, most of the best activities in Tera do not open up until max level. If you can put that much time into before it meets any of your criteria, then it may work for you. Rift on the other hand has much more to do, for you and your GF at all level ranges, and will most likely keep you more entertained during the leveling process, instead of just powering through to get to the real game at max level in Tera.

Rifts housing is exactly what your GF needs. The dimension system they have in place is very robust and a must see for a "decorator". Although I wouldnt call it the best on the market, its a very close second to EQ2 (which wasnt one of your options, and doesnt really meet any of your other criteria).

So in summary. If you are looking for the game that best suits your specified criteria, its hands down Rift. If you want to listen to people telling you Tera looks better, or the combat is more fun (both are subjective, but not wrong), and you dont mind it not fullfilling your criteria, I suggest give it a try.

Archeage requires a lot of commitment and you should be part of an active and supportive guild.

There's a lot of good in archeage and you certainly can ignore the quests if you are interested in crafting but it is very crafting centric.

Someone would have to speak more to the "decorating" part of archeage.

It just felt like hardcore farm story to us. It was SO centered on farming and crafting, I didn't feel like I could do anything else.

I recently moved to Tera from Rift because I felt after the Nightmare Tide expansion I was being forced as someone who enjoys pvp with a side helping of pve to get deeper into the pve side of the game than I wanted to . This happened because both pvp and pve gear has been unified . Also there is very little open world pvp in Rift . That is not to say Rift is not a solid mmo . Thus far I'm enjoying Tera and I hear its a lot more pvp orientated .

So I guess its really down to what you enjoy in a game . I would play both side by side for the first 30 levels and see what appeal to you personally .

Tera was good but I ran into a problem with performance.  I have a pretty decent gaming rig, but it still did not run well for me.   I5 @ 4.1 mhz, gtx670, 16 gb ram.   The battle grounds I went into were almost slide shows.  That was the major drawback for me. So if you are playing on older computers, that is something you might want to consider.  I will note that I am picky about performance and really hate low frame rates.

But you can always try both and see which you like better.

    edit

One thing I will say is that Tera has some really cool mobs.  The BAMS are great and some of the other ones are just really neat and original looking.

your rig is slightly better than mine and i run tera smoothly..

try this if you have nvidia : download nvidiainspector, search tera profile and delete it ..... afters open nvidia control panel and adjust settings for tera for better perfomance

Rift is a fantastic PVE game, but if you're heavily into PVP i wouldnt bother.  I enjoyed it back in the early days when it was just instanced battleground stuff, but from what i understand now it has no seperation between PVE and PVP gear.

That being said, the PVE parts of the game are absolutely great.

Really ti comes down to whether you prefer tab-targeting combat or action combat.  If tab-targeting, then Rift.  If action, then TERA.

Since when is Tuesday a direction?

That's because Archeage simply isn't that good, it was extremely hyped because of the freedom the game supposedly gives you, it masqueraded as more of a sandbox when it's actually more of a themepark, when you play it you'll quickly find how shallow most of its systems are, it does a lot of things but doesn't do them very well, it's very mediocre and in the end a child version of Black Desert.

Not only that, but apparently the game opens up "after level 30" and that's where all the fun is meant to start, after you quest grind to level 30 you can start doing other activities like crafting and tradepack runs, people don't do much more and the rest of the systems are pretty lackluster and unrewarding. There's the housing system as well which you can't take advantage of unless you become a patron, in which case you may as well play WoW or ESO for $15 a month which are much better games. The landscapes are big yet empty in Archeage but I'm sure you noticed that when you played, all in all the game will become completely obsolete to most of the population once Black Desert comes out, even Rift is a much better game than Archeage.

Of course these are partially opinions and you're free to try out Tera/Rift yourself in comparison, but one thing that's NOT an opinion is that Tera has the best cash shop system on the market, they give you everything free in that game besides some cash shop cosmetics, but a free player still has access to all systems of the game. Stick with Tera or Rift, Archeage is not a game for the long term.

Tera- dungeons, BAMs, graphics are amazing. Rift is pretty good too though so you should have fun in either.

I think the open world pvp is better in Tera. Also Tera has amazing battlegrounds, but you can't access the first one till level 30 or something.
