So, I was going to go on a big rant about how every new age MMO is solo quest till max lvl then raid but I'm sure everyone has heard it before. I'll just ask point blank; are there any new age MMOs that resemble the older models? I'm talking about games like Everquest 1 and DAOC. I love those types of games because of the social aspect of it. I don't want to pay 15$ a month to play a single player game. I like camping a spawn for hours on end or dungeon crawling with a group of buddies but I am unable to find a newer MMO that fits that bill. Is that age of the MMO completely dead? Is there a game I may have overlooked? Just so someone doesn't mention a game I have already played here is a list.
Age of Conan: Unchained, Aion, Dark Age of Camelot, Darkfall: Unholy Wars, Entropia Universe, EVE Online, EverQuest, EverQuest II, Guild Wars 2, Lineage 2, MU Online, Rift, TERA: Rising, World of Warcraft
I played DAOC for about 3+ years and EvE online for 3+ years and enjoyed them a lot. Most of the others I played here and there for maybe 6 months or so.
Thanks for your time!

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:
A. Proven right (if something bad happens)
or
B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)
Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!
The old school model of aoe camping mobs was just as boring. So I don't see how that's the solution unless you like hardcore grinding like a robot in one place for hours.
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.
To each his own. I really enjoyed getting a few buddies together, setting up a camp and pulling mobs over and over while we chit chat for a few hours. Oh look there's a duo over there! Lets join groups and head to a dungeon! Thats the sort of MMO I played and liked. Now pulling the whole zone and having an overleveld/buffed character AoE everything ya thats boring as hell and I don't like that.
You seem like the same type of mmo player as me. Those types of games do not exist anymore but I have a feel that they will comeback. The only game that I know of where people pretty much play grouped is Lineage 2 and probably Final Fantasy XI. Lineage 2 starts off as a solo game but when you get higher level everything you do will be in a group with other players. Just keep in mind that the game launched in 2003.
I generally agree, but I actually enjoyed this in City of Heroes, mostly because I found the combat system so fun.
I do agree though, that I would like to see a game where the world is dangerous enough that grouping is mandatory. If I wanted to play a single player game, I would play a single player game - they will do it far better than any MMORPG can ever hope to.
Sounds like Archeage would be a good fit for you.
- No dungeon/raid finder tool = People aren't sitting around in the city waiting for dungeons to pop.
- People are always forming groups to grind mobs in the Hasla zone so they can get tokens to purchase weapons/shield.
- PVP raid groups.
- Fishing groups.
- Guilds frequently do trade-runs together.
It's definitely a more group/guild oriented game than the majority of mmorpg's that have released in recent years. Sure it has its flaws, which there's no shortage of people eagerly awaiting to point out every chance they get, but I don't think I've ever played any game that didn't have flaws or shortcomings of one type or another. It's F2P, so there's no initial investment required to try it, though if you intend on playing it for any extended period of time you're going to want to get patron status, which can either be bought for $14.99/month or purchased with credits, which can be obtained via Apex, which is bought with in-game gold.

Please rant. It's the only thing these forums are good for.
