I love MMOs and I'm not really playing one right now. I guess I'm subbing FFXIV but I might actually play 5 hours a week currently. Just log on once and a while and do a dungeon run with a RL buddy of mine and that's it.
In all honesty if I am actually playing an MMO I don't usually frequent this website. I am most active here when not playing and anticipating a game. Yet I'm not even doing that right now…. I need to get a new hobby.
Are there true MMORPG's out there today? I haven't found one.. They are all lobby based linear themepark games.. I think the last true one I played was SWG (pre NGE) and EQ. The one thing I miss the most about EQ were the zones.. From newbie zone to raiding zone, I was actually sad most of the time when I out leveled an area and had to move on.. I enjoyed each step and zone and never felt like I was trapped in some dumb zone wishing to level up and get out of hell..

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR

So under your point of view, what defines a good MMO is if it is a Sandbox or just a themepark?. The real problem here is about how in the last 10 years gamers/players have evolved, video games have evolved but MMOs are pretty much in the same place that we found them 10 years ago, WoW and his 10 mill of subs lie is probably the main responsible for that.
MMOs need to evolve, learn from the past 10 years, and evolve, All those Kickstarter indie Sansbox MMOs that we will see next year are just games for a really small and core group of players, but not the future of the genre.
What MMO will show us the way, is still uncertain.
The real problem here is about how in the last 10 years gamers/players have evolved, video games have evolved but MMOs are pretty much in the same place that we found them 10 years ago,
What are you talking about?
Now we have MOBAs, instanced based pvp MMOs like World of Tanks, instanced pve games like GW1 and Warframe. 10 years ago, we have nothing but virtual world games.
I would say MMOs have evolved into more varieties and better (for me) games.

"The genre largely began with Aeon of Strife (AoS), a custom map for StarCraft[1][2] where four players each controlling a single powerful unit and aided by weak computer-controlled units were put against a stronger computer-controlled faction.[3]Defense of the Ancients (DotA), a map based on Aeon of Strife for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne, was one of the first major titles of its genre and the first MOBA for which has been held sponsored tournaments."

With the plethora of other games out there I haven't even tried yet, I'm pretty sure I could quit my current MMO without any regrets and go back to single player games.
The only thing holding me back is I'm heavily invested in the story of the game (which I'm sure I could find Youtube videos of if I wanted to, but it's just not the same experience if you don't accomplish it yourself) and the people I'm playing with. (some of them I have 10 years of gaming history with)
I only got into MMOs because the console franchise I played (Final Fantasy) came out with one with FFXI. My exposure to MMOs apart from this was practically none. My idea of a multiplayer game before FFXI was Starcraft.

since MOBAs are not part of MMOs, i would say that is close enough ... so MMOs took RTS ideas and evolves into a new game type ... i don't see how that is not related to MMOs.
If MMO can take RPG ideas, FPS ideas, why not RTS ideas?

You would say. But, speaking taxonomically, you'd be wrong. Also:
Love MMOs, been playing since SWG pre-NGE, but since ESO I haven't found anything worthy time and none of the current games on the market appeal to me.
To the people who respond that aren't currently playing an MMO. What games are you looking forward to?
Go download Project Gorgon .. and give it a go ..
I cringe every time someone suggests this. Download this game if you want to know how bleak the future of sandboxes are.
Just because some of us long for a good sandbox doesn't mean you can throw standards out the window.

I see it, mostly in response to your constant posting that they're the same genre despite having distinctly different self-defining game designs (say that ten times fast). Marketing and journalism don't make right. Snopes.com can attest to that. Or the recurring Cracked.com article that proves many "headlines" run by major journalism organizations patently false.
I didn't see anyone in this thread mention the issue until you brought it up, as you are very wont to do. So, you got a visit from ole Fontleroy. Feel free to bring him elsewhere whenever someone else brings this up in a thread that's totally unrelated. He won't put up a fight, I promise.
Love MMOs, been playing since SWG pre-NGE, but since ESO I haven't found anything worthy time and none of the current games on the market appeal to me.
To the people who respond that aren't currently playing an MMO. What games are you looking forward to?
I know what you mean. I played City of Heroes until it ended. I tried Neverwinter, Star Trek Online, and Wildstar (even a bit of WoW) to try to get back into MMOs and they all fell short. I'm waiting to see if City of Titans or Valiance Online will pan out. Until then I'll play non-online games. Sadly my computer is finally starting to show its age (built it when Windows 7 came out) so unless I upgrade the graphics card, I can't play many of the new games. That's OK there's still many older games I want to play.
Me. I've been playing SMITE, the 3D MOBA for two years at a semi competitive level.... but I actually despise it. Don't get me wrong, I love the game and I love mythology, I just despise that this is my "gaming life" now.
I've never liked the themepark style of MMO, yet I've tried nearly every single one that has come out. I'm tired of MMOs that challenge that model shoving out half-assed pay-to-test alphas that lack content or polish or enjoyment and never reaching the promised land of, uhh... What they promised you for your support?
Okay, so my boat is being rowed my two people now, that is good to know.
You are not alone. I would be playing ESO, but Update 5 broke the game on my computer and Zenimax after 3 weeks of troubleshooting couldn't fix it. Sooooo until I get a new PC, I've switched to a console (PS4) for the first time in 10 years and I couldn't be happier. I am currently LOVING Dragon Age Inquisition, about 20-25% in and 60 hours played. Its one of the best games I have played in ages. I can see myself returning to ESO when Nvidia released the next big card (like a new Titan or 980ti) where I can game in 4K without SLI as Nvidia and AMD now suck at supporting games with SLI or Crossfire at release. When they do release the next big card, then I'll get a new PC as my gaming laptop is over 3 years old.
My other lessons learned is to never buy a gaming laptop. I bought it from a company called Malibal and they are the worst. Horrible support, over priced, and the damn 580Ms overheat constantly. They forced me to attach a 2nd HUGE powerbrick just to play MMOs lol.
not playing any MMORPG right now. i never liked the grind or cared for my items in MMOs but liked to play with others and exploring vast lands. i understand grinding is sort of fused to the genre but since it is very time consuming in MMOs many or at least some rather not spend their life doing the grind in more than a few MMOs.
i would love it if one day the story in an MMO make me feel really attached to my character or even to some of my items but i understand it is a hard task specially when you see other people walking around with the same stuff or character design you have.(like if you could give a name to a sword you forge and add description/story to it, it could make things better. not sure if it is done already just an example. something similar is already done for character creation) i understand some already achieve this through "role playing" but sadly no MMORPG really gave me any desire to "role play".

Not looking forward for Mmos, next game for me will be Farcry 4 and then Witcher 3.
i am opposite to you. I do not love MMOs (they are just some online games to me) but i do play Marvel Heroes. Very fun MMO that can be enjoyed as a single player game.
Wait.......you don't love MMOs and yet you have posted 20 000 times on mmorpg.com? Anyway........
I kinda feel the same as the OP. I have played and been disappointed by too many mmos in the last few years that nothing can keep my attention for too long anymore. I'm hoping The Repopulation, Blask Desert or something else turns out to be a winner.
to the first question: No you are not alone. There has been absolutely nothing to interest me for about a year and a half now.
to the 2nd question: Absolutely nothing in the pipeline looks the least bit interesting to me.
The only thing I can see that might save the industry for me is a developer which makes a game in which no exps are awarded for any quest. Items, faction, opening of special area's etc would be o.k.. I also hate that games have a complete armor set every 5 levels with additional sets of rare/epic loot at higher levels every 5 to 10 levels. I also really hate that "rare" etc type loot becomes more and more common the higher you advance thus no longer being rare.
There are many other things which annoy me about the current generation of MMO's but that list is way to long for a post like this.
I'm not playing any MMO's either currently. Black Desert may be fun for a short while, but what i'm really interested in is Camelot Unchained. Another MMO that could be fun for some time is Bless, and then there's Lineage Eternal and Lost Ark. Camelot Unchained may be more of a niche MMO, but i'm pretty sure they can make it work.
I've just been replaying older games mostly, because i'm finding it hard to fill in the time until new releases come out. The games that i deem worthy anyways, considering i'm not supporting the likes of Ubisoft, EA, etc. I even replayed Planescape: Torment as well, while i'm waiting for Torment: Tides of Numenera.
As much as i used to love playing WoW, that time has passed about 3 years ago. The game is definitely not for me anymore, even though i really wanted it to be despite Blizzard's new audience direction. Too many changes, but not in the way of overhauls for the classes.

I'm still waiting for the next FFXI......FFXIV left me wanting to send Square Enix a box of crazy ants.
Played ESO since public beta/launch.
Then took a break to try WoD. Quickly got to 100, leveled my garrison and geared char.
Went back to ESO after a month in WOD.
Many people still belive early reviews and never look at what changed. Its a healthy game today and have to say quite fun.
Mature player base helps a lot as well.
