Why exactly is this game so bad?

Biggest issue I have with the game are the money farmers and bots in the game. They are destroying the market by being able to purchase 100's of gold with money which would taken a normal player around 30-40 minutes to get to the location to turn in their packs. Then they have to wait 22 hours to actually get the money. With the purchasing money, they can purchase gear which normal people can take up to a week or more to get.

The problem is most people don't realize this.  They want to slog through monotonous grinding, levelling up, and gearing up, even with a cash shop on top monetizing it at the expense of making it fun/bearable/sane, just to do something they could do in other games without the monotonous grind.  All because it gives them a sense of accomplishment.  But then, feeding on humanities' addiction tendencies is the primary way that F2P games make money.

Quest markers that show you where to go.

Japanese anima'ish artstyle ( just not for me)

I could go on but for me those are my main gripes.

The game world is pretty nice though albeit really artificial.  Absolutely no effort was given to make this game a living breathing world influenced by the players.  ArcheAge is everything that is wrong with the current crop of MMO's.  Still glad I tried it though.  This game actually made me miss Darkfall.  Might have to resub.

I agree with a lot of what you wrote.  I tried the game but just did not have any fun.  And with all the fuckups Trion and XL have done, I'm actually relieved it was such a turd and didn't waste any more time than I did.

I personally don't put much stock in these toxic forums, but for the record Ive been playing since beta and havent enjoyed an mmo this much since Ultima Online. My server is alive and thriving and I plan to continue playing for the foreseeable future. Are there some issues?   Absolutely, but I'm having fun and that's all that really matters.

People are still talking about how much the game sucks? with all the time spent doing that, you could have a full epherium set in AA without using your credit card at all!
Now Playing: Bless / Summoners War

Epherium isn't made with time.  It's made with labor.  All the playing AA in the world won't get you more labor if you aren't using your credit card (unless you're spending that play time pirating people or playing the auction house, but that's really not most peoples' cup of tea) (and Labor compensation potions don't invalidate that statement because those are capped at 2 per day)

Also, Epherium is so last month.  Delphinad is what all the cool kids are wearing now.

The higher level zones are all PVP zones where not only do you have to try and quest while enemies come up behind you but people in your own faction can purple up in an instant and attack you.  Did I mention the water area is all PVP with roving gangs just waiting to catch an unsuspecting fisherman?  It is a PVP game but some people dont realize how PVP focused the game actually is.

So you made it to max level?  Awesome!  Now you have to go to a place called Hasla that is a very small PVP zone where you have to kill mobs who may drop a random token from 8 possible tokens.  You will need 150 of a specific token to get your first PVP weapon but you will compete with the rest of the pvpers on the server for the limited space to farm the mobs.

Got your Hasla weapon?  Awesome!  Now you head to a dungeon called GHA and farm that over and over with a group to get your pvp armor.  You need 7 pieces of armor I think.  I have had quildies who had great luck and got their entire set in under 10 runs but i also have some you have run it more than 30 times and still dont have all their pieces.

So you decide not to PVP and craft instead?  Awesome!  All crafted weapons require a material that is rare, unless you buy it from the cash shop.  And once you buy the material, crafting is all based on random number generation and not your skill.  One guy will craft an awesome bow his first attempt while the next guy will fail 10 times in a row.  Of course their are things in the cash shop to better your odds with dealing with the random number generator.

Did I mention most land is taken?  There are still places for the smallest farm and you can always buy property from someone but property is taxed each week, I have a farm house which cost 15 tax certs each week and to craft the tax certs, it costs me 200 lp to make 5 so each week I have to use 600 LPs just to pay for my house.

Oh, and dont let people grab your interest with castle seiges.  There are 4 castles on each of the 21 servers and there have been at least 3, if not more, rounds of seiges and not one has even been close.  That means out of 252 possible seiges not one castle has even fallen to the attackers.  The walls are buffed making it almost impossible and Trion has done nothing but say they are looking at the evidence, week after week.   Castle seiges are for the most part abandoned, most castle owners have not even been attacked.

I had a great time with the game until I hit level 50 and started to farm.  Now I log in, spend all my LPs in 20 minutes farming and crafting and then log off.  I'm just waiting for my sub to run out.   Could have been an awesome game but the issues dont get fixed and there is a new exploit each week.  This week there is a trade hack allowing someone to use the secure trade to scam you.  To you it looks like the item is there but once you hit trade, the item disappears and you are left with nothing while the hacker gets your gold.  Trion has done nothing about this issue.  There is a flower that makes people dance and will dance you right off your vehicle allowing people to take it and steal your trade packs.  It has not been fixed in two weeks.

I recommend you try it but dont drop a dime until you get closer to level 50 so you can make an informed choice.

This post sums the game up perfectly.

AA is such a chore...a job....I played for a month and quit for the reasons this poster said perfectly. If you like to be punished..play AA

It's not a game..it's a job. I would expect to be paid $20/ hr to play this job.

This is the worse game/job I've ever played..and I've played a couple dozen mmo's of over dozen or so years.

Now 3,5 months into Arcgheage and my opinion didnt changed.

with the esperience of  17 years in MMORPG's i can say ,this is the best MMORPG developed since a decade ago. Finally a developer put some thought into a concept that support many playstyles and designed a believable seamless world where players can be part on every activity they want to. PvP, PvE, craft, explore, hunt treasures, be a fishermen, design and play songs with instruments, design your custom logo on cloaks and tabbards, grow any sort of herbs and plants. There is hardly any MMORPG offer all of this AND THAT CAN be played on casual basis while doing this.

A lot of thought has been put in the game design to make this possible and it resulted in the most balanced game i have ever come across to, in  regards of hardcore vs casual, looted vs crafted gear and  PvP playstyle vs non PvP playstyle.  The later is well banlanced in the risk vs reward formula. If you want as a non PvP higher gains per run then you need to take the risk and enter PvP regions.  vs you can stay forever and never come cross to any PvP activity while you gains are smaller.

You Just answered your own question. On a plus note, dont forget about the insane amount of bots, farmers and hacks that the game like pretty much any other F2P korean MMO have.

There really is zero balance in PvP, there are what 120 possible combinations? Peeopla in PvP play 4 or 5 of them. And those all own. But it also isnt really even avout the skills you get butt he gear youre wearing. Game is 90% gear and 10% ping and skill in playing a class is really zero.

But since so much else is broken or hacked in this game then no one can really talk about it because when a game is so horribly coded and run taliking about  class 'balance', gameplay' options, and lack of content etc is way down on the list of complaints. The game is broken on the most fundamental of levels and has ben since long before it was launched in the US.(west). Te hope people had was trion was going to stuff those holes and gaps with software. Unortunately they havent and wont and are doing what many feared blaming Xl for their coding and not being able to do anything to 'fix' the game.

Nothing Trion claimed they wold do have they done. worse they made things go backwards. What few limited 'fixes' they have implemented have actually made trying to play legtimately even harder.

Now what you say the game has it does in the most basic sense. Which does makeit a good design/blueprint for a game but the implementation and coding of these things is so bad every part of them can be manipulated and worked around. That right there makes the game totally invalid.

And if you think it doesnt effect everyone (even if you dont see it) youre blind. It actually makes it worse because the game is run by people who spend the most money. The only thing it has going for it is that its so bad that people dont know any better and think the screwed up stuff is 'normal'.

Not saying the labor system is perfect, but I don't have a lot of time to play and so I sell my labor. I process materials for gold. It's not the best system but you can use it your advantage.

Also, you can play this game casually and still make gold and buy gear. I don't have to schedule Raid times to advance my character. Again, everyone knows this game could have been better, why has the hate gone on for so long, it's getting more obnoxious than the white knights ever were.

    whats wrong with it?

first they went hard with the gamble box's which at first it was that bad b/c it was only a donkey but then went on to the thunderstruck tree's that gave 10% more chance of getting one and those tree's you need for pretty much all big builds of Vehicles.. so all in all that 10% you have a more of a chance to get thunderstuck log(300g) Thunderstuck tree(1200g) which you need 2 TS Tree's to make a Fishing boat which in the end make's you a lot of money since you can store fish when you go out fishing with it.. or the merchant ship that you can store 20+ packs on which makes you bank..

The other reasons was that there was an exploit in the cash shop items that people exploited to make gains, they caught a couple players that did it but most of them are still reaping the benefits..

1 Exploit was the Credits.. which you buy 1 Apex and you can get 10k+ from 1 that should only give you 1250..

Another exploit was you would mail the apex to an alt character and at the sametime you send it you open it.. it would give you the credits and it would still send the apex to another character...

and lastly there are land hackers I guess... I never really got to see one b/c I got land in headstart and on Auroria.. but after all of the apex exploits and nothing really done I just stopped playing.. you can't compete in that game without being a swiper..

I am a huge pvp person and I finally broke my habbit of spending lots of money in cash shops and dont want to go back to that dark place.. just to have fun for a year or some in a game. it just isnt worth it imo, so I tired to keep up to the swipers by just farming 8 hours a day after work on jester bags, tradepacks.. and sometimes fishing.. made 1300 gold in a week or so but that is just a fraction of what you need to buy a good weapon..

Kooncoon gives a great view on the game.. and how it is really hard for free players to keep up with the pay players..

he finally quit archeage after dumbing a ton of money into it.. I believe he deleted his characters...

    watch that video..

This game is a RNG item trap with a cash shop that is fully PTW. The game is fun until you start to get towards end game. At that point its over. Labor is stupid you cannot even play the game completely as a subscriber without buying massive amounts of stuff off the cash shop. God forbid you go to a pvp zone and run into a pocket warrior.

My character has t3 hasla gear and 7/7 plate and leather from GHA and when a credit card warrior attacks me I tend to get stunned/tripped and 2 or 1 shot.

    End of story

PS this game should be shut down for gambling for money or at least most people warned. Full blown Asian ptw game.

That's my suggestion to everyone too.  Go find a different game.  Fortunately lots of people seem to be taking it.  Unfortunately, many others don't, keep complaining, yet keep playing and paying. Which only continues to keep encouraging this type of monetization model.

It's not a game..it's a job. I would expect to be paid $20/ hr to play this job.

This is the worse game/job I've ever played..and I've played a couple dozen mmo's of over dozen or so years.

Agree 100% with the first post and your response.   I truly felt as if AA was going to be the game I would be playing for several years.   Unfortunately after the shininess wore off,  I started to see the cracks in the game.   Don't get me wrong, I don't mind working hard for something and am far from being "entitled," the common insult thrown around the forums.    I started running into the labor wall all too often and would sit there for a few minutes starting at my screen thinking....now what am I going to do?   Yes, you can make your own fun...explore, PvP, etc.   After a bit though, that wears thin.   After our second trip into Hasla, my spouse looked and me and said, "This is kind of boring."    As members of my largish guild started to feel the same way, my enthusiasm dampened even further.    Most folks in my guild have drifted back to their old games.

I decided to hang on to AA....I have my nice thatched farmhouse, my livestock grazing peacefully away, a nice lakefront view.    I'm slowly plugging away at my crafting profession.    I decided that AA is best played with another MMO and that is why I reactived my WoW account after 3 years.      I can quickly exhaust my labor points in AA and log into another game to 'have fun."   After doing this for a few weeks, I found that logging into AA was just a chore.   I canceled my sub yesterday but will hang around a bit more in AA to see if things improve.  I still have weeks on my sub so I will log in every day, feed my livestock and just wait.    I fully expect to see server merges at some point and part of me is happy for that.  When/if I lose my land, my decision is easy and the stings are cut.

Another thing that really bothered me about AA was the griefing and just plain cheating.  Although all games can attract their share of griefers  (WoW has them in abundance....high levels opposing faction killing NPCs, blocking of quest givers with huge mounts, etc), folks seem to take great delight in taking every advantage of the systems in AA---the flower exploits, bridge blocking, trade window hacks, land grabbing, etc.   Cheaters bother me even more.  We had one guildie exploit the game like crazy and made thousands.   He was banned....temporarily....but was let back into the game with his thousands of ill gotten gains.     In the meantime before he was caught, he 'laundered" his money and quickly maxed out several professions.  Seeing this self professed cheater (he bragged about it in guild forums) made my blood boil.   There seem to be a number of other cheaters running around with just a slap on the wrist.   AA also seemed to bring out the worst in many people and my guild ( a community) almost fractured over this game.

Anyway, I don't think it is the "worst" MMO I've played but it was pretty disappointing.  I'm still emotionally invested and hanging on but it doesn't leave me with a warm fuzzy feeling.   My advice to a new player is to try out the game, make your own judgments.   My only note of caution is to not get too caught up in the euphoria of a brand new, sandbox feeling game and don't make any snap decisions on long subscription plans like I did.   I remember receiving a PM from a long term beta player many months ago regarding AA....words I chose to ignore.  Now I wish that I had listened a bit more.

That and its pretty much like every Asian mmo to me anyways. The style just doesn't work for me anymore. It seems with every new Asian mmo it gets worse. And i will always feel that Asian mmo's are made based on how they are played over there. All the players play mmo's in cafe's not at home like we do in the U.S. That's the biggest reason why cash shops have p2w items  in them. Over there play time is limited and costly.

    ......sniP

Whats described here is a games strength really ..it  balance out  inbestment vs gain.

Sport fishing can you net immense amount of gold, without that mechanic the game would be ruined. Sport fishing as it is with this gameplay mechanic still can make you rich on gold.  Well thought out by developers to balance this with such labour cost an i am glad they did.

Cloth armor that never can be destroeyd ?  It should be limited. I am glad the developer make the grineers pay an investment bprior them flooding the market with 24 hours item grinding. Its bad enough as it is with so much labour people can get , it fills me with horror thinking about these labour osts wouldnt be in the game to limit those 24 / 7 maniacs.

100 LP to get 140 wool !!  Yes thats almost half a fabric pack just from that one sheering !  100 LP look to me to easy going on the fabric generation, cost should be higher considering the cotton way to fabric.

120 LP for crafting abnd turning in a pack.Yes well thought out cause the materials used in those artifcials packs cost a fraction of that gold you get when you turning in as a pack.  I am glad the developers implemented a well thought dynamic to balance this out with the appropiate Labour cost.

The "cash shop" labour is limited in the use. Only 1 pot in 12h can be used to grant you 1000 LP.

The "cash shop" labour has been deigned for the free to play crowd to use since they don't get the patron LP otherwise.

But guess what the maniacs that pay patron and swim in LP want to use them too ??!

These instagrab generation that wants all now and cant enjoy the path to something like real MMORPG veterans did, is Archeage biggest problem. Their judgement is driven by instagiv without using braincells to think about gamemechanics.

    Ok let's have a look.

    1. Horrible graphics. Games from 2004 look better. WoW looks like next generation compared to AA.

    2. Horrible animations

    3. Horrible questing. This is as bland as questing can get. They did not even TRY to conceal how no thought was put into the quests. This game makes Rift questing look like the most exciting and exhilirating thing ever. And we all know how terrible Rift questing is lol.

    4. No housing/farms for regular folks. Huge design flaw. Limited space for housing/farms makes the game unplayable for a lot of people. And housing and farming is fundamental to the game but only select few (aka botters/hackers and people who were there at the very beginning) can actually own land.

    5. THis game is extreemely poorly coded so there are hacks/bots everywhere.

    6. RNG in this game is sick. And I mean ridiculously sick. High level crafting (which your source of the best items) is extremely, EXTREMELY grindy and it's all down to whether the RNGesus is on your side. Crazy low chance of success.

    7. Horrible Hasla grind.

    8. It's business model is horrible and extremely greedy.

    9. Horrible launch. Horrible launch of a major patch.

    10. Putting super expensive stuff like thurstruck trees in the cash shop. And to get one of these thunderstruck trees, you need to be very lucky. RNG much?

I am sure I can come up with more stuff but this game is just horrible. If there was a poll for the worst MMO of 2014, I am going to vote for Archeage without ANY FREAKING HESITATION.

    This game is horrible. Horrible.

PS. Ignore DMKano. He will whiteknight this game till the end of time :)

My problems with the game were the cash shop implementation, the changes made to the game between alpha/beta and release, and the hacks/exploits that were rampant from day one.

I LOVED the game prior to the 1.2 patch.  If Trion had launched AA as a P2P title with that system in place, I think it would have been a huge success IF they were able to deal with the hacking and exploiting.

    1) It is the only MMORPG I have ever played riddled with hackers

    2) You literally cannot do anything without seeing multiple botters

    3) The PVE is a joke

    4) It is monetized in a very poor fashion in my opinion

    5) It has had more server downtime (especially during weekdays) than any MMORPG outside of its 2 week launch window.

The game itself had great potential but the back-end support was atrocious, and failure to implement effective anti-cheating mechanisms are not excuseable to me.

Like with every Korean MMO, they put all their eggs in the PVP basket, which generally wears off after a month.

I'd personally kill for a PVE focused, EQ1/SWG style MMO with Eastern art style. That's what i was hoping AA would be.

For me, I just found it to be boring.  A ton of content to be sure, but it all felt the same.  Questing and combat feels just like every eastern MMO I've ever played, I don't feel unique at all.  The storyline is trite and uninspired and the sandbox elements have a lot of tedious aspects to them making me not want to develop them further, such as the Labor Point system.  I wouldn't use it as the "source" of what to compare games to in "bad" game terms but I wouldn't use it as a defining moment in game development either.

Honestly though, just try the game for yourself and make your own mind up and then see who you agree and disagree with, that will answer your question better than anybody's opinion in this thread.

I don't really understand why people are saying it is so bad.  Is it bad hardware (lags or servers going down) or trolls (13 year old boys in chat or high level PvPers killing low levels left and right) or bad gameplay or rather than P2W it is more like P2Even function in the game?

If they had a sub only server I would play. Does that answer your query?
