I've tried a few games over the years and most recently Drakensang, but the mind numbing grind with is killing me and it's time to look for a new game.
I more of a pve guy versus pvp, but as long as there is an option, I'm good with it. I want something that isn't too boring yet doesn't rely on a grind that lasts forever. I like the Diablo style games which is what originally drew me to Drakensang.
Premium or subscription is fine, they are usually cheaper than the F2P games :-) Although I would prefer a chance to start free to see if the game is worth investing the time and money.

When I said i had "time", i meant virtual time, i got no RL "time" for you.
Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!
Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!
Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!
All MMO's have grind to some degree, even the really good ones. Its how they keep you invested otherwise you'd clear all the content quicker than they can pack it for you. It sounds like to me however that you don't mind a grind, but wish to be immersed to some degreee so the weight of the time spent is not filled with mind-numbing tedium.
Personally I would say check out Final Fantasy 14, there is a trial presently so you can play for free to see if it's your thing. But, as long as you play from 1-50 on a character you will not feel any grind. If you wish to do all the jobs on one character, then you will feel it. But if you were to play now, you'd prolly catch up in time with Golden Saucer and there is a lot of end game distractions to get involved with.
Path of Exile is always good, it is an ARPG like Diablo so expect the normal loot runs you would do, but building characters through their extensive talent tree is very fun.
The Secret World is a good game too, but can get a little grindy at the end, but the story and pve content is solid and I would recommend at leats giving it a go.
My top grind free/light games are:
Single pay - Guild Wars 2
I really liked Guild Wars 2 before they screwed up World vs World. But the regular persistent world and main story feels the least grind out of any MMO i've played. I feel like it only becomes a grind after you've put in at least 65+hrs since that's when you're really trying to get the uber items that require grips of repetition. But the game as a whole just felt very expansive, the persistent world evolve a little each month, on going story, personal story, etc. The nice thing was that anything you do gives you EXP, go explore, get exp, craft something, get exp, leech off a party, get exp, etc. And the month to month events are nice to keep things a bit different. And you couldn't mess up your character since you could always change your stats later. There is even a PVP section for practicing builds and trying out different equips to see what works since while in this specific pvp mode you get to wear basically any rune equip from a locker so everything is balanced.
If they would fix World vs World I would jump right back into GW2.
Free to play - Atlantica Online
Atlantica Online wasn't too bad as far as grinding goes, mostly since it felt more like a strategy game kind of like Ogre Battles. I also liked that there were a lot of layers to the game the more you progressed and joined a guild. And when I stopped caring to play the battle portion all I did was play the market and craft, since the game doesn't limit your crafting ability to your level since it has nothing to do with levels and more about just having items.
I wouldn't mind paying a subscription if the game didn't feel like it was intentionally creating grind just to make me play longer to pay for the subscription like Final Fantasy AR that game is nothing but grinding, jesus christ. They seem to throw every grind trick in the book at you, it's high popularity does show that there are a lot of people who like to grind for the feeling of time put in equal work output. But I'm like you I can't stand repetitive grinding, that's why I like the above two games because they provide a lot of change or dynamic fighting or continual new experiences.
I also wish there were better evolutions of games like Dungeon Fighter Online or Rusty Hearts since they feel more like the old school beat'm up games but something you ham out on like a fighting game since of just clicking constantly.
It sounds like some of you have misunderstood what I am looking for...
I fully understand that all mmo games have some grinding to them... However, when it takes months to complete 1 quest, that is when it becomes a bit much for me. Running the same map over and over and over again hoping that a good piece of gear falls out of the sky is the part where it becomes boring.
I honestly would not care if a game takes 2 years of playing to reach the "end game" maps as long as there is something to look forward to.
What I don't like is when all the quests happen in the first week so that you level up to the end game and then have nothing left to do but grind endlessly for nothing.
rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar
Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D
If you like the Diablo style games (isometric camera, find l00tz) then maybe try King's Road. Its very similar to Diablo except its browser based and instead of huge levels divided into chapters, each "level" is like a little mission that takes 5 - 15 minutes to beat. You access each mission from a hub center.
I am still not entirely sure what you mean. If you are looking for a quality game with interesting quests and a slowish pace of levelling then ESO is a good bet. NWO has an interesting levelling experience but it is really quick to get to level cap. Neither game feels particularly grindy while levelling.
Once you get to end game unless the game is pvp focused, aren't all mmos about grinding the same dungeons over and over for gear?
Gw2... You don't have to grind for anything... You can claim yur exotic gear in days and then you can do anything you want. WvW, Spvp, pve, living story etc. etc. The only grind that you will see is cosmetic grind. That's all...
Well, there is still the ascended gear who is slightly better stat wise, but GW2 is probably the least grindy modern MMO.
If that is too much grind for OP I would go for the first Guildwars, there is nothing out there with less grind.
Its only a grind if you dont enjoy the game.. if you cant have fun just playing the game then stay away from it..
Most people called Darkfall a horrible grind because it took a long time to level your character up.. but I really enjoyed it so never really noticed it andI was just a casual player..
At the end of the day an mmo is not just about end game but its about having fun playing the game from the start to the end so if you cant find this fun playing mmos then best to try something else.
While that is true you can very well consider some parts of a game grindy, like certain level ranges or the raiding, and still enjoy the rest of the game..
But generally is it grindy if it either forces you to repeat the same thing over and over or if the content is very similar (you killed 10 rats for me, now I need you to kill 10 cockroaches as well). And some games have more of that then others.
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.
