the new screens look great. are those cave environments? i'm pretty excited about all the different terrains this game is going to have, the graphics so far are pretty impressive.
Ahh quite a lovely game this will turn out to be indeed, yet no crafting you say? Where did you read that? I've searched the main site and can't really find anything about it..... Please help out. Ahh and very nice updates, it's nice to see a DEV post on something other than their own boards for a change

It is correct that we do not have crafting...at least, not in the traditional sense. We do have the ability to imbue items with special virtue powers allowing you to create unique items that cannot be obtained from just monster looting. You cna sell these items for gold or use them yourself!

IMO crafting is very important part of the game. It really should be a part of every MMORPG. Housing is not that important but it's a nice concept that adds some value to the game. Do you have any date for the start of beta testing? Will players from Europe be able to participate?

I guess that would work greatly in some cases, yet wouldn't it throw back people whom only play for crafting? Yet, I still like the idea and I think it could work quite well. (Of course there might be a few bugs here and there, but oh well :P

I for one like what I'm hearing about the developers not including all of the traditional systems just to have them for release. I think most of us play MMORPG's for the adventure and IMO combat is a bigger part of that than crafting or housing. I like those aspects too, but if it's something that will be developed later and added as an expansion to a well thought out game then i can live with that. If they put as much thought into those aspects as they are the combat/questing/dueling systems then it's definitely going to be something to look forward to.

This is how I feel too. All too often I see games add crafting (and housing) just because there is this weird assumption that every MMOG has to have these features. Then, the crafting system usually goes in requiring weeks of nothing but click-fest, macro-like gameplay. Just doesn't make sense to us to add something like that. We want to make a game that is engaging in all aspects.
So that doesn't mean we'll never add crafting. But, if we do it'll be just as deep and fun as our combat and adventuring.

I don't have a date for the beta or how it will work. We'll update the site with beta information once those decisions are finalized.

Crafting is not only about doing repetitive clicks, or a click fest as you call it.
It is a different way to reach your goal in a peacful manner, without ever wielding a sword or wearing an armor. Its about gathering and trading ressources, setting up your vendors, chatting with the smith ( ot whatever) next to you .
Dont get me wrong here. I am more of an adventurous player. I love to explore new areas, new dungeons, fighting fiercy beast...and, well...not to forget about collecting some nice loot
But there are times when i just want to sit back and relaxe, do some less thrilling and less exciting stuff suff.
Thats why i LOVED to play a fisherman in UO from time to time
As I'm sure you all can tell, I'm relatively new around here. I've been reading the site for some time, but haven't been vocal as of yet.
I have always been a big fan of adventure MMOGs, but have very little gaming time spent with "crafting" and "housing." I am really looking forward to this option. Allow me the time to kick back as well as really make the realm more of a society.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT UO/UXO PREMIUM PRICING
Q1. How will I be billed if I am subscribing to both games?
A. You will continue to be billed separately for each product, no matter what price packages you choose.
For instance, if you choose to subscribe to UO on a monthly basis and UXO and a three-month basis, your credit card will be billed $9.99 a month for UO and $27.49 every three months for UXO.
Q2. What about players using a Game Time code, do we get any premium pricing benefits?
A. For customers using a Game Time code for their Ultima Subscriptions, instead of discounted rates, we will give you bonus Game Time days. You will receive extra days when you enter Game Time for either Ultima subscription, so long as you have an active subscription for both products. The bonuses are as follows:
A 30-day Game Time code will actually add 39 days to your subscription.
A 90-day Game Time code will actually add 115 days to your subscription.
A 180-day Game Time code will actually add 216 days to your subscription.
The bonus is applied each time you use a new Game Time code, just so long as you are an active subscriber to the other Ultima game.
The Game Time bonus is not retroactive. That means if you are on a Game Time subscription for UO, then later use Game Time for a UXO subscription, only the UXO subscription will get the bonus time.
However, when you buy a new Game Time subscription for UO, the bonus will be applied to it, and to every new Game Time subscription, just so long as you're an active subscriber to both games.
Q3. What about pre-paid subscription for both games?
A. For players who want to play both games with a Game Time pre-paid subscription, combo Game Time codes will be sold through UO customer support when UXO launches in early 2004.
Combo Game Time codes, which will give access to both UO and UXO, will cost:
$19.99 for 30 days added to both subscriptions.
$54.99 for 90 days added to both subscriptions.
$99.99 for 180 days added to both subscriptions.
It's pretty detailed and I think the whole info is on the http://www.uo.com/pricing.html page. Glad that they're doing this!
UO started many years ago, and as i see it (correct me if im wrong) it was one of the only MMORPG's on the market at that time. Many people started playing it, and got sucked in by the concept of a MMORPG. Through the years the game develloped to be a great universe -if you will-, with a huge amount of content, a huge amount of goals you can put for yourself. I quit it a long time ago because i didnt like the direction the game was taking and i was irritated by the players more then that i liked playing with them.
IMHO, if UXO wants to succeed they have to devellop the game in a way, that reflects the original UO, but with significant changes to graphics sounds and controll. I mean many many people fell in love with ultima online, and i still think they will again if devellopers are able to get the same overwhelming feeling across to the players playing their game like (for me) was the case in Ultima Online.
I think that if devellopers decide to leave out vital parts that made the original UO great (like PVP, Crafting and definitly housing) they will make a critical error, because i know a lot of players in UO, that did never come into a dungeon, or accept a quest because it was fun for them. No that can only entertain for so long. No, people kept hunting because they wanted the 4 mil extra so that they could buy that nice little small villa near brittain, wich will become THE place to be for shoppers because they could sell their crafted / found items there through the best selling system i have ever seen in a MMORPG (vendors).
Without those elements to keep players interested once they reached grand master, it will be just like DAoC without RVR, shadowbane without PvP. I think content is the key to any (MMO)RPG. Heck everyone can make a game with skills to gain, and dungeons to tackle or unexplored area's to explore. But what really makes a game interesting is content to be involved in after you have reached your first goal. Or your second. That was and still is the power of ultima online, because without all the content, (new) mounts, (new) houses, (new) items (to craft) and such, it would never have existed in the way it does now.
I have been a die hard ultima online fan. I liked Blacksmithing, i liked buying houses to sell them again at profit and i liked PvP and even factions. But if there was only 1 of those options in the game, i would never have had a hard time leaving in the first place.
I agree. Fighting and questing is the most important thing. But other things (crafting, housing..) make people stay with the game and help develop communities.

I played some other MMORPG but none had the UO feeling...
Yeah there where games with better graphics, better teamplay, and even games with a better combat system... But still it was nothing like UO...
UO had so many things...
The only game where I could stand at the bank and just listen to the ppl... Hear them selling, hear them talk to friends about there adventures, see guildmates PvP eachother. It felt so alive...
I love the crafting: tinker, smith, tailor, carpenter, mining etc. You really could do everything... I could run around the world and just look into every house to see how the ppl decorated it. And the vendors were great too... Thats why I played UO for 3 years...
I did stop playing UO but it was just because of the grieving... I know that every online game has it, but in UO it happend to often, it ruined my fun.
I really hoped that UXO would give me the game that I would play for another 3 years or longer... but from what I see now is that it is just a DaoC without RvR... (I played DaoC for 1 year, nice game but didn't have the depth of UO) I really hope UXO gets the same depth as UO had.... But you need more then good combat/quests for that.
And don't get me wrong, the features that UXO mention at their webpage do sounds fun, but I miss so many things that made UO great and better then all other games that I have played...
UO definitely set alot of standards for MMORPGs, and it was an awesome game in alot of ways. UXO is something totally different though, which is good to see happening. What I'm excited about is the plan the devs have got for the game. Most of us like and play the combat/quest part of MMORPGs more than the crafting/housing in general and I think the devs understand that. The fact that the systems they're creating for those parts of the game are so detailed and unique mean that I'm probably going to enjoy playing right away. And while they're not including the other more community aspects immediately it doesn't sound to me like they're ignoring it. I think they just want to be able to provide the same level of uniqueness and detail in those that they are doing for the other systems. I'd rather wait for something better than have a half done rehash of the same old stuff.
I personally never really was able to get into crafting. There was nothing wrong with it, it just wasn't my thing. The ability to imbue weapons with virtue powers, however, sounds quite interesting! Does that mean, for example, that we could theoretically take a lightning virtue and put it into a long sword to create an electrically charged version of a long sword? If possible, could you elaborate a bit more about the system? If it's too soon to speak about it, that's perfectly all right. Thank you for posting here on our forums, your input here is very much appreciated .

Basically you can imbue weapons with properties that you can't get through normal looting. These include effects like lowering the "aggro" your weapon does against a monter (perfect for mages!), giving you resistance to effects like stun or root (which you normally can't get), etc. There are 8 total virtue imbue effects, one for each virtue.
Not every item can be imbued and items can hold varying amounts of virtue depending on how powerful the item is.

I've read that you can anounce war to another clan and if that clan agrees the war begins. How does that look? How long does that war last? Does it involve only one massive clan vs. clan battle? Or can you freely attack members of other clan untill some form of truce is achieved?

I don't want to get too far into the details of the guild battle system because we haven't posted about it on the official site yet. But basically a guild officer can challege another guild to a battle. He can set a variety of settings such as participant total, battle type, victory conditions, map, wager, rated, etc. If accepted a private map is created for the guild to fight on. You can't freely attack other guilds though.

Hey, for all current UO players here I just got this from Stratics:
On UO.com, a new UO - UXO Premium Pricing Plans Overview and FAQ Page popped out of nowhere, listing detailed information about a combined pricing model for both games:
