AD2460 asks for your phone number to register

dalewjdalewj Member UncommonPosts: 94

Maybe i'm just an old coot, but if you ask for my phone number to register to look at your game there is now way I'm going to register. An email address (Which you also demand) is more then enough to send me an activation code.

I don't see the issue, give them some random number. Does it say you have to give them a real working phone number? Places that ask for it, I always give them the number for my old home.

This particular old coot has been handing out random digits as my phone number for years.  :D.  Just because they ask you for certain personal info for signups doesn't mean anything other than the email address has to be true, lol.

During the MANY years I've done this no game company has ever sent me an email saying they'd tried to ring me but my number is incorrect.  :)

The reason why the phone number is needed is simply to be able to send you your user creditdentials.

So providing a fake number will never give you access to the site, as your password is sent by SMS.

We will never use the phone number for any other purpose or charge anything to your phone subscrition.

You could argue that this would be better by email, but we have landed on SMS in order to reduce multiple accounting (one account per phone number) and to avoid automated bot scripts filling up our universe with "bot-accounts".

The game launches on December 29 - you all are most welcome to try it out

It is about time companies finally take some responsibility with who they allow through their doors.

Yeah I was thinking the same.

Think about ArcheAge - originally you had to sign up with your passport id. People couldn't create infinite accounts and hack and bot all they like.

Getting away from the anon system is good for any honest mmo player.

Don't be a smartass, not giving out your phone number to strangers are police guideliness in Europe. It has nothing to do with social life.

It has to do with identity theft, fraud, easier access to your bank information, etc. For children it has to do with stalking, harassment, etc.

Since you live in the UK, here is what your police says about this, metropolitan police site:

I use my mobile purely for friends and family and nobody else.  By "nobody else" I also mean game companies, so whatever this game is about I won't be playing it.

I don't give out my phone number either. I don't want it to end up getting sold to other companies and put on call lists for sales.

You can get free SIM cards from various companies, just for the asking.  Even better, the Burner app gives temporary numbers for your monile phone...  "Burner is available on iOS and Android, and comes with a free trial that lasts seven days, 20 minutes, or 60 messages.  You can get unlimited voice minutes and texts in the area code of the user's choice for 8 credits, which cost from $4-$5 depending on the amount purchased."

It reduces your security measures against multiple accounts to near pointlessness.

If you use a smartphone and have downloaded an App then you have given your phonenumber not only to the Google Play market or the iTunes store but also to the creator of the application in most cases. You have no idea who they are or what they do with the information.

If a gaming company like the one behind AD2460 uses a phonenumber for their registration its something they do overtly and they are also bound by the laws of their country to handle that information responsibly. They are from Norway as far as i know so not some kind of shady third world shadowcompany.

So if you use a Smartphone of any brand, then you have already handled your Phonenumber much more irresponsibly than what you fear would happen signing up to a game that are very public with how that information is handled.

I can understand the reasoning ,may perhaps have to do with CC fraud,when/if they see some suspicious CC activity via cash  shops purchases, they want top be able to call before it goes through.

I have actually purchased game keys before from over sea firms "ya risky i know" but had no problems at all, they called me on my phone to verify i was legit, again i have no problem  it was their cost for long distance not mine and everything worked out fine. However yes i think most of us have given out fake phone numbers when a site asks for it.

Give them the number of Interpol, see how funny Interpol thinks their game is.

You can't just ask people their phone number, unless you have a good reason.

    "BUT GOOGLE DOES IT"

They do, and they're in trouble in Europe for linking phone numbers to other services that have nothing to do with a phone number, like email and youtube.

Does that make owning a smartphone a further requirement for this game?  I'd have to factor that into the expense of playing.

Back in the digital transition era, I kept an analog phone because it cut through all the 'enter your number' digital malarkey, and generally got you connected to a person at support instead of endless menus designed to convince you to give up.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

From the info on their website the phone only needs to be able to recieve an SMS. Something most ancient phones can. So that means no smartphone is required.

If you dont submit the right number you will never be able to activate your account.

As long as you have a unit/device/PC with an internet browser and internet connection you can play the game.

The phone is only needed for receiving your password upon registration

Any 1900 number so they get billed high for it.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

Our company has been in business for nearly 15 years and we have always complied with all applicable laws and ethical.

As written before, we have chosen SMS for user authentication to avoid multi-accounting - I would higly appreciate if you could tell me where this law is written and we will change our sign-up system instantly. I doubt you will find this law anywhere.

But if you are right and such law exsist, which I doubt, I will offer you free gaming time for AD2460 for the rest of your life. OK?
