DC Universe Online: Name Reclaim 2015 Announced

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Sony Online Entertainment has announced that the great Name Reclaim 2015 initiative will be happening soon for DC Universe Online. Beginning January 20th, accounts that have been inactive for the past eighteen months or so will see character names 'reclaimed' so that other players can use them for newly created characters. Characters and names will not be deleted, but will have an underscore and a Roman numeral placed after the name.

If you haven't logged in since July 20, 2013, and do not want to lose your characters' names, you have between now and January 20, 2015, to log into the game. Simply logging in once will preserve your names. The actual renaming will then take place a few days later. Check back for the exact date.

If you know of friends or league mates who might have stopped playing but would want to keep their names, please help us spread the word before January 20, 2015, so that they won't miss out.

For everyone else, get ready to name or rename your characters with some new, old names!

So basically it's a clean up of inactive accounts. That's cool. I wish more games would do that.

Most games do... both the automated HKP and this kinda massive sweep. Though the auto-rename is a bit harsh maybe... just put the characters "on hold", until their names are really needed, or the player logging in the next time.

(TOR did that last year. True, it was still a hassle, reclaiming my previous names one-by-one :) won't be a problem with DCUO, I used to log in every once in a while.)

Thats just it most names are not being used by some players thaty have not been on sense release up to a year after. If any of them are to return they would have by now and this will free up hundreds of millions of names that are no longer being used just collecting dust.

This is good news finally I might get to finish making my supers with the names I have wanted to use and I dont have to get the names already in use only to find out that person has not been on sense launch.

Well if they had a naming system like Cryptic's this wouldn't be a problem.

It's a console MMO.   They can have whatever cool names I came up with.   'Cause I'm not going back.

Is Superman still an Ice Tanker?

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Exactly! Been saying this since the game's launch in Jan 2011.

Losing my names to the server merge was the final straw for me with DCUO -- so I left.

I really wish more developers would realize just how important names are to some players and incorporate a better system like Cryptic's.

Wow, funny/ironic that the two biggest reasons I left DCUO were mentioned in back-to-back comments in this thread.

As mentioned in my previous post, there is the whole server-merge naming-conflict issue and then there is the button-mashy, repetitiveness of DCUO in which the powersets suck and force you into certain archetypes -- like ice or fire tank. Of all the ice-based characters in the DC Universe that come to mind, none that I can think of are tanks...they are blasters!
