[General Article] General: Warhammer Quest Review – How Not to Port a Mobile Game

BillMurphyBillMurphy Former Managing EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 4,565

Warhammer Quest is the perfect example of what’s wrong with the gaming industry in 2015. Rather than creating new experiences that people want to play, developers and publishers are shoving these types of quick, cash-grab games out by the truckload. Let me give you a bit of a history lesson on Warhammer Quest and why you should stay far away.

    i agree makes a great mobile/tablet game!

love it through n through!-they should of focused on an mobile xpansion instead of a PC version -imo.

@orbitxo - I had not seen this game yet. This looks really good. Cool tactical gameplay in the Warhammer world.

    Thanks

just tried it....looking nice at first but is getting horrible realy fast

Every second menu has something that requires unlocking in the shop. Even next to oyur gold there is a + to add more of it via shop. Controls are ok but ui and ui-mechanics are bad from the perspective of a pc player(no museoven functions, no right-click-tooltips, no keyboard). No real control over saving/loading is another negative thing for me.

Thank you for the brutally honest article. At first I was a little put off by the immediate negative bias against the PC version but as I read on I could totally understand the frustration you felt. I've heard many good things regarding the mobile version but I stay away from cash-store games on phones (It's just gone too far on mobiles) so was looking forward to this one on Steam.

My expectation was like yours; if something is going to cost me three times as much as a mobile version it should come with three times unlocked content or at the very least some unlocked content that isn't in the $5 version, slightly updated textures, some slight audio enhancements (since it's not using mobile phone speakers anymore), and SOME sort of effort put into adapting the controls to a mouse AND keyboard for crying out loud.

Hell, even if the game is excellent if one could ignore all of those flaws, the sheer lack of effort, love for their own game, and care for their consumers experience is outrageous and has shut my wallet to Rodeo Games, Twistplay, Chilled Mouse, and any other publishers/developers that practice this business mentality.

I'd like to think that the more of these articles and reports we see will lead to less disappointing ports like Warhammer Quest, but who knows what they are thinking anymore when it comes to pushing out games and their ports these days. Keep up the honest reporting David.

Thanks for this response Tallyn. This type of positive feedback and appreciate is always great to receive. Writing reviews like this is tough, so I'm glad to see it's making a bit of a difference.

Unfortunately, I don't think negative reviews will have any impact on releases like this. The term "cash grab" get's thrown around a lot on this site. But I think something like this really is just a quick generate some cheap income type of release.

They probably assigned the smallest team possible on it and gave them just enough time to get the bare bones release done so they could release it and get some cash  and move on.

They don't care about informed gamers reading reviews first. it's a $15 game with Warhammer in the title. They're just expecting enough quick impulse buys to generate some revenue and then they will forget about it.

Thanks for the honest review  David. I was tempted to buy this game but now knowing all the paywall stuff and lack of love I wont thank you.

I only hope the Mordheim game will be more than this.

My opinion is my own. I respect all other opinions and views equally, but keep in mind that my opinion will always be the best for me. That's why it's my opinion.

Can you play against other people online with the tablet game?

No you can't. There is no multiplayer for either version of this game.

That was a nice suggestion, it looks quite a bit more robust!

    Good, honest review.

I bought it and he is right. I didn't read the FINE print. It reminds me of Odium (if any of you remember it) The biggest complaint is that, like the OP said, everything costs even after you've purchased the game. Want extra swords, bows? A buck each, want extra classes to take on your adventure ? $2.99 each. I can tolerate a cheap game that's fun that is a bit out of date. I cant tolerate an out of date game that likes to charge for more that should BE in the game.

The only way that this will stop is if people stop paying for the extra content. OFC here the base price is a rip off too.

Ummm don't think David have play the game or do good research.

Warhammer quest the board game, 4 player and one DM if you don't want to play the automated dungeon, so 5 player max not 6.

A lot of people ask for a PC or android version because they don't have overpriced ipad. That why the port to PC. Its a port, so the UI need mostly only the mouse. Some short cut have be made like 1,2,3 or 4 to select a character, but for a PC gamer, yes its not enough.

Anyway, the game is 15$ on steam but contain add ons the 5$ iOS game doest have and worth 20$ on iOS. the deluxe version 30$ worth around 50$ on iOS. Always wondering why people see 2 different package and doesn't look what each contain. buying the cheaper will not have everything, I can guaranty it. Its all in the text on the store page.

If you buy the deluxe version, you have ALL ADD ONS you can have except the possibility to buy gold, but you don't need to buy gold, except if you want finish the game without playing it.

Anyway if you want a skyrim game don't buy it, if you want a tabletop game where a dungeon can last 10-15 min its a good game. It not a perfect game, he need work but they working to it. If you find 30$ a lot, wait for a good steam sell.

    Sorry for my bad English.

So the 6th paragraph , kinda trializes and makes the rest of this review sound petty , and doesnt justify the score you gave for a game that in your own words..

"Enough of that though, I should probably spend a little bit of time talking about the game itself at this point. Believe it or not, it’s actually a pretty fun and rewarding game – the iOS version must have a nearly perfect score for a reason, after all. The overall goal of the game is pretty simple: explore dungeons, kill enemies, and get rich. It does a nice job of tapping into the addictive treadmill of kill, loot, repeat, and once I got passed the initial issues I was having a good time for the most part"

So you enjoy th game itself but gave it a bad score for its cost which isnt relative .. they can charge whaeveer they want.. (and seriously its 20$ for the amount of fun ..its worth that ) ..Dont Buy it! .. you also trivially pick at UI that works perfectly for what the game is and needs to do ...pretty petty review overall and seems you have a bone to pick for some reason..
