The Dark Elf Trilogy, Icewind Dale , Chronicles, Legends, and the Elminster books. I know I read a lot of others I enjoyed as well, but those are probably my favorite. I always wanted someone to do something with the Chronicles trilogy, but it never happened. Forgotten Realms is probably the richest world in terms of lore, but the current D&D rulelsets aren't as fun as the 1st and 2nd edition. It's why the video games that are based on them now don't due to well IMO. They also like to push their current settings on people.
Each "new edition" of D&D has been more and more tailored to video gaming. 4.0 was so MMO oriented, even having classes listed as "tanks", "Healers", and "DPS" types.
This may be true, but I don't see any games ore MMOs using it. Perhaps it just seems like it is being written in the same fashion of MMOs, but it's actually just copying all the IMO boring ideas we see in most (not all) current RPG games.
There are a couple book series I would love to have as an MMO:
1. The Green Rider series by Kristen Britain, I would love to be a Green Rider delivering the mail and running into all sorts of mischief and mayhem!
2. Wheel of Time series - Robert Jordan. I have read his series since the 1980's ( I heve have Book 10 autographed by him). I would love to be an Aes Sedai!
3. Sword of Truth series - Terry Goodkind. This series was a fun read (and I miss the TV series even if it was nothing like the books). It would make a fun MMO though.
Originally posted by Wolfhammer Also the whole of the David Eddings series of books... The Mallorean or some such.. Cant quite remember as I was a LOT younger when I read them, but did read every series....
The Belgariad was the first series. I think you got the second one right
Though I have not read the book (just watched the movie), I agree Thane's "Blade Runner" idea. That could make for an interesting setting.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
Dune will never happen. The Herbert estate is crazy protective of their IP -- as anyone who played the old Dune board game (now called something else with a completely different IP) will know.
My favorites that I would like to see become possible mmorpgs:
The Vlad Taltos ( Jhereg ) book series by Steven Brust - ( Fantasy world, humans and dragaeran races, mob/crime vs royalty/heros factions )
The Myth ( Ahz and Skeeve ) book series by Robert Aspirin - ( Multiple dimensions, multiple races and worlds with magic/no magic )
The Honor Harrington book series by David Webber - ( Militaristic space story, multiple worlds, genetic engineering, political intrigue and war! )
Or if webcomics/comics can be included:
The Girl Genius ( Online Comic) by Professors Phil & Kaja Foglio, could be a great mmorpg. - it has a great story, expansive steam-punk like world theme ( Sparks, jaeger-monsters and science! )
The Gold Digger comics ( Comic ) by Fred Perry - Awesome world with interesting characters ( Fantastical and inter-dimensional creatures/people and science! )
Originally posted by Aeander Anything by Brandon Sanderson would make a great MMO, but his new masterpiece, The Stormlight Archive, would be especially good for it. It lends itself to a unique setting, political conflicts, dynamic weather, and faction wars. Plus, it's full of fascinating wildlife and fauna.
First thing that came to my mind was the Mistborn series. Classes could be each type of Misting, all based around the uprising against the immortal leader.
The Morgaine series by c.J.Cherryh, sci fi dressed as medieval fantasy, end game raids would consist of gathering an army to help Morgaine and Vanye destroy each world gate then port through to the next world.
This would likely suit a large multi player audiance rather than mmo maybe, say 60-100 player/server.
Wheel of time we may never see since red studios have been sitting on the ip since 2008 :S
What book do I think would be a great foundation for a MMO?
Ringworld series..... Dune Series..... Several of the sword and sorcery fantasy novel series would be awesome, it's been so many years since I read them I don't remember their names now...
Just one problem. Every time a great Book (Tolkien) or Movie (Star Wars) or TV show (Star Trek) get's used as a foundation for a MMO it gets butchered. Every time. It's not fair to the original Authors/Creators of the IP, nor is it fair to the Fans of the IP before it gets used for a MMO that so many find unacceptable or substandard.
So I would rather NOT see any more great books have their reputations ruined by being used as a foundation of a MMO.
None. The best settings for MMORPGs are original, as the lore can be tailored to fit the game as needed, whereas when you're basing the game on a pre-existing IP you always have to dance around the source material. The best MMORPG settings I've played in have been City of Heroes, Eve Online, and The Secret World, and I don't think it's a coincidence that they're all original.
I saw this one mentioned many times, but I think the land of the Wheel of Time series would make a great setting for an MMO. The only thing is, I think it would only work as a PvE focused game (maybe with some instanced PvP), rather than a sandbox open world MMO.
The only reason I say that is the books are mainly about good and evil, Light vs. Shadow. Open world PvP in this game wouldn't make much sense, unless you set it at times where certain nations are at war. I wouldn't mind if certain liberties were taken with the story to make it work, but others who are fans of the series may or may not be as forgiving lol.
The time just before the Last Battle would probably be a great place to start it. Or maybe the time just after saidin was cleansed.
