Let’s remember a year of Landmark development by looking at two good and bad aspects of the game that are likely to be transformed or improved upon by Everquest Next’s development.

what is amazing to me is how few people seem to be working on landmark or eqn...i'd expect a team of such a big project in the 100 people area...maybe soe doesnt take this project as seriously as we thought or the situation is really dire

Lndmark is nothing but a testing ground for Next...

all your conclusions are based on landmark, while EQnext will probably be a 2017 release...

Combat deffinately needs work, they need to add lots and lots of interesting sytems and combos to make an 8 skill combat system work for most MMO players...  But obviously the team is there to learn from Landmarks testing

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

I am a huge fan of optimism as well... but I can see why MMO fans have gone from extremely optimistic about a new AAA title to as skeptical as the day's long.

Every single MMO since WoW's first release has overpromised and underdelivered.

EQ: Next looks like it's easily on pace to do to WoW what WoW did to EQ and bring the genre to the next evolution... but it won't have a chance if its combat sucks, the grind isn't balanced and players have a hard time finding meaningful things to do, as the writer said.

With every failed title, MMO players become an increasingly fickle bunch. I gave Archeage until level *2* to impress me. It didn't, logged off, never played. Based on how poorly its doing, I didn't make the wrong decision - I just made it faster than everyone else.

In this market, you just don't have a long time to make a good impression - especially a Free to Play game.

What games out there compare to the current combat systems talked about?

    Two games come to mind.

Guildwars 2 due to it's obvious use of the way the weapons are directly linked to skills. Some of how that game did this would not feel deep enough for EQ universe though. An example would be resistance checks to damage types. It seemed to me that damage was only modified by crits, bleads, burns, etc. This was stacked with combos that made it a bit more interesting. But EQ had fantastic resist checks and all mobs and players had built up resists that modified tactics you would use against them.

Neverwinter due to it's more action oriented active blocking and other things seems to be a direction as well.

Would really appreciate more info on how the system will come together this year. I liked some of the keynotes but they are more talking points than functional displays at this stage. Crossing my fingers that EQ Next will be a great success since players are being put to work to basically make many of the structures of the world and the world has already been etched out from the maps we have seen. Combat animations seem to be coming along well. My thought is we will see an alpa/beta access starting in July and official beta in November since the devs have switched gears to EQ Next full time.

Aw man I just hope I don't lose interest by the time the game actually releases.....which has been the case for the last few MMOs I had been burnt out by hype.

    They already have shown them.

Caster freezing the ground and then a Melee destroying the frozen ground to access another area. Not sure if the Caster couldn't break through the ground with other means, but I'm assuming team work will result in more efficient result.

They've also said that there will be individual "combos." As in chaining class skills will result in different results then the individual skills themselves.

Hopefully it doesn't take 3 months to hear something important about the game .. Luke the mechanics or story bricks in action

thats not really what i mean...look into dragon age where every class has combo initiater skills and combo detonator skills - but it mostly only works cross class..

for example - mage freezing an enemy and warrior being able to shatter enemy with shield bash...

sure in eqn everyone can be everything but such cross class work would be very interesting to benefit cooperation and make the combat more tactical...

Thank you for mentioning that the Combat sucks. Number one issue with the game as it exists thus far is a combat system that feels terrible. If they fix the combat, the game will be on a much better footing.
MMORPG players are often like Hobbits: They don't like Adventures

people already overhype what that stuff will mean...in the end it will come down to, if faction x rules a certain area you will see soldiers x running around, if y takes over you will see y soldiers running around...but my big guess will be that this is the only change youll see...

DA's system doesn't seem too far away from what they've alluded to with EQN. I think with 40+ classes that combos would have to be based more off of CC or effects in general. Like a Warrior stunning an opponent would allow a Mage to do X% more damage. It would be based off the Stun effect itself and not what class caused it, not too unlike DA's system if I'm reading it right.

While I wouldn't mind that type of setup, I also like SMITE's "combo" system as well. Where it's more about positioning and using hard to land skills. If a player has a hard to land attack, another player can knock an enemy up/down/back or whatever into an area or position that makes them a lot more vulnerable and easy to hit by other team mates. It's less effect based and more use of space and timing. Hopefully we see a variety of things in EQN.

EQ Next? Is that still even being made?

It's been so long I thought SOE went into the house-building business.

Well, at least that's how it looks to me :D

Well with the purchase of my new PC, I have been playing a lot of EQ:Landmark over the past week or so.  I must admit that it has been fun, especially porting down into the depths and running around using my grappling hook on everything I can and just "hanging around...", yea I went there.

I actually am enjoying the combat system however I can see some issues with it.  Although I have only tested with the sword thus far and haven't done anything with wand/bow/2-hander etc.  So I am looking forward to trying those out but so far the combat doesn't seem awful unless your just not into that type of thing.  I will also agree that as it stands now the mob AI is so awful, it really is easy to kill any mob.  Strafe in 1 direction around target while attacking, any mob is dead.

Last night I actually had another player give me a lot of stuff.  Although I am kinda wishing he didn't since now I find it hard to figure out what to gather for but I also got some of the higher tier weapons.  For instance the sword with the charge and aoe on it, which has made the combat more entertaining with the added abilities from just the regular swing.

Some of the issues are concerning, but I think the game thus far has a lot overall that is worth it and making it fun.
