I'm a mid 30s mmo vet going back to school, so my time is now extremely limited as well as my wallet. I need help deciding between LOTRO and Rift to satisfy my mmo urge. I like short dungeon runs and good story quests.
LOTRO - I have a 54 Loremaster on Brandywine that just got into Moria. Do people even still do Moria dungeons? I haven't played in many years. . I enjoyed the quests and story line, my only worry would be that I would be wandering alone and not find any dungeon groups for my level range. I also have no idea where to begin with weapons, leveling, etc.
Rift - I have a 53 Mage in one of the zones of the first expansion. So I'm not extremely too far off from the new content. I loved my Rift mage. Are people still leveling thru the last xpac?
TLDR version: I would probably enjoy LOTRO more but wonder if people are playing old content like Moria? Are all the players in the new stuff only?
Edit: I'm open to other suggestions. I just have those 2 games already installed with some content available and mid-high range characters. I have a mid level Cleric in Tera...I loved the healing in that game, and a couple characters in Neverwinter. I just thought LOTRO or Rift would probably be better for longevity. I checked my LOTRO account and had founder coins accumulating so I can purchase the 3 expacs I didn't have. Still deciding between that or Rift.

My first thought was similar to the reply above, why don't play both? But I'm a hopper
Rift first, because I know less about it:
if you have SL already, you can play the whole game without any restrictions. (a limited wallet can tilt the scale heavily) I'm not familiar with the end area, I rarely play Rift nowadays, mostly just goofing around with the Dimensions.
LotRO:
Brandy is a crowded server, you can find groups easily. Moria is still runned frequently, no matter which server I play I see GS groups forming all the time, Delving too. Won't "be wandering alone" anyways, with the beorning there's quite an activity on the lower regions too. As an LM it'd be fun to see all those bears like your pet, just a bigger version
"where to begin with weapons, leveling, etc." Moria was revamped a year ago (or 2), it's a nice ride now. If you're in the beginning of it, everything will be straightforward, won't have problems with leveling. "just got into Moria" I guess you have the first LIs then, that system hasn't changed either.
I play both.
I find Rift probably easier if you want a mix of easy activities. You can do instant adventures for quick group PvE content (though I find it boring), Rifts and zone events pop up everywhere, dungeon queues aren't too long as long as you can do more than plain dps, and pvp queues at peak time are fast too. You'd get from 50 to 65 in no time, as like most MMOs, levelling is really dumbed down.
On the other hand, I find LOTRO more relaxing. It's a more peaceful game, generally slower paced because of the enormous landscapes, but that's not to say it's not fun. It's much more content rich, the quests are more engaging. The server population issue is being addressed this year, but as it stands, group content can be hard to find on most servers, and PvP options are poor.
I engage far more with LOTRO -- while Rift has excellent qualities, it's very generic in storyline and much of the areas are direct copies of WoW.
For you I'd suggest a bit of both, as others have said. For a quick dungeon fix Rift's good. LOTRO for the quests and content, you're already on a busy server so you can find group content there.
Thanks for the replies. I'll probably start with LOTRO since one poster mentioned older instance runs were still active. I had gotten the first quest legendary weapon there and then went back to complete book 13 in Forochel.
I could try to play both but with maybe 5 hours a week total leftover for any gameplay that doesn't give much room for two games. If you worked night and weekend shift and had school during the days you'd know. I miss my 20+ hours a week of gaming, playing 2 mmos was easily done then.
