Curious... Beta vs release

ChromeBallzChromeBallz Member UncommonPosts: 342

I've been reading up on the game here, but some stuff confuses me - Some people are calling the game crap simply because it's not the same as it was during the beta phase. Others are digging it quite a lot despite there being less emphasis on a sandbox and more on a themepark.

Thing is, i can't really find much information on what's what and how stuff worked then and now. The question is, can anyone explain the differences between beta and release? Please, no insults back and forth or subjective terms - Simply state how it worked then and how it works now.

I've played it for minutes at best when a few friends coaxed me to try it out, but i dismissed it as it didn't really fill the shooter niche i was looking for. Now i'm back trying to see if it works as an MMO style game.

So far the only in depth information on the game i've seen comes from MMOGrinder: However, the video is from almost a year and a half ago and probably not relevant anymore. I do wonder if the community bit still holds true, as it does seem quite horrid.

I also wonder if it also works as a PvE game. As i'll be playing with my GF i'm not really looking for PvP that much.

Well, the point is that i want to get a feel for the development of the game. As i have limited time i don't want to spend it on a game that's moving in the wrong direction :)

Firefall was at it's best (in my opinion) at beta .8 version. Release changed almost everything. In beta crafting was incredible and you could tailor make items to suit your play style.

Now all that being said the game is getting better. Very slowly....combat is still fast and furious (especially in events). I do miss the jump jets and Chosen weapon drops we had in beta. Try the game out...it's fun. I don't do the job boards and you can level up just doing events. Most of the player base is great.

PvP is hurting right now, but soon they will be working on that.  The new level 40+ (no level cap increase) area will put us to the test.  Now how do I kill those brutal juggernauts?

To be completely honest, I haven't played it since beta, but I plan to this year. I played this during beta from the initial launch until about 2 months before launch. In all honesty, I loved the game as a shooter. I loved the events, but there are plenty of people on here who feel beta was better because it was more open and I don't think they like the "levelling" model. So it was primarily gear-based progression before. Now it's levels, as I understand it.

Personally, while I loved the beta, it was very lacking in any sort of focus. The crafting was good, but became extremely grindy at higher levels. The meld was awesome, I was actually in a city near the meld one day, and logged in the next day and BAM! I was dead. It was a bit of a piss off, but still freakin' awesome. Personally, I support level-based progression and I definitely think that it makes sense in Firefall. Without it, the game did feel much more empty. While events popped up, and they were great, it often felt like your singular objective in the game was to keep a thumper on the ground as long as possible, and that's just not how everyone wants to play.
