[Column] General: Why Heroes Charge is Nobody's Hero

Heroes Charge is a dreadful game in some ways. It just is. I’d rather not waste your time and, frankly, my time, with attempting to flower this several-hundred-word column with attempts to describe the game’s systems and finer points. It’s a Sunday, my normal day for writing these articles, and the Golden Globes are on in the background. My dog is begging me for food as I type this up. I’m having a Hostess Apple Pie. I have things I’d rather be doing that talking about this title.

I can also tell you that Ucool, the makers of this bad game, completely screwed over all of us playing Commanders of Evony when they abandoned it without notice or refunds, so they could support Heroes Charge. This review indicates what many of us already know (the hard way). Avoid Ucool games like the plague.

I generally rate games I play on my iPad using my Pooper Scale. The scale is meant to determine how fun the game is in 15 minute increments. I've actually started in on Heroes Charge and it's alright if you're looking for something to fill some bathroom time and you need a game to fill a slot in your bathroom game rotation (Right now, for me, that's Monster Legends, Tap Titans, and Heroes Charge). Progression seems really quick at first, but it's one of those games that you couldn't sit down with for hours at a time without sinking in significant cash.

Free chests every minute, free epic chests every 48 hours, +60 stamina a few times daily, arena every hour (I think), "Raid" a couple times daily. There's plenty to do and you don't really need to sink cash in if you're looking for something to pass the 10-20 minutes you're on the can. Anything more than that and I think you're going to be let down.

Oh yeah! I'd give it 3.5 Poopers out of 5.

While it may be an accurate review of the game, Beau, next time wait for the nausea to pass.  You write better when you aren't choking on your own yak. ;)

So...mobile games still pretty much universally suck? Because they still pretty much do.

How do these random mobile reviews get chosen anyway?

Pretty much this. Mobile gaming is only ever meant to be played in small bursts. Sounds to me like the reviewer is looking for mobile games to sit and play for hours on end like some sort of MMO. Taken in small 15 minute here or 20 minute there fits, the game is exactly what a mobile game should be. It may not be the best, but it covers all the bases.

As for the bit about adding more to combat, like some sort of match-based puzzle. Well, theres already a whole genre of mobile games doing just that. From Puzzles & Dragons to Marvel Puzzle Quest, and quite frankly this isnt meant to be a team building match puzzle game. To say that it needs to be, is like saying LoL should add quest hubs and NPCs. Thats just not the game it is. If you want a match puzzle game you pick one from that genre.

All that said, Ucool is pretty bad about supporting their games, and will likely move on to the next when its time. Also, it has a very high P2W or at least Pay to get Ahead structure. It would take hundreds of dollars if you want to be the top in the arena, but you can settle for a very mediocre middle and play for free without any pay walls in the content. Overall the game can be just as fun as any mobile, just dont expect to be the best without paying for it.

I did get a 3-star hero out of a free chest tho :)

Agree on this. Unless you're willing to throw these games away, you might as well not start them. Same goes for pretty much any game by Kablam!

This game's mechanics, reward systems, and gameplay are exactly copied from a game called Dot Arena. It's also nearly identical aesthetically. The makers of Dot Arena are being sued by Valve and Blizzard because their characters are identical to DotA characters. A newer game called Gods Rush has also copied these same mechanics, reward systems, and gameplay, but with completely new visuals.
