H1Z1: It May Be Monday Tomorrow, But a Patch is Incoming

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The SOE H1Z1 team was on hand much of Saturday to put the finishing touches on a small patch that will be deployed on Monday, January 19th. The patch will deal with some server stability issues as well as sorting servers by populations and getting rid of the ever-annoying floating arrows.

1) Floating Arrows - yeah they are annoying as heck. 2) Further analysis and improvements for server frame rate 3) Buffing shelter doors. 4) Sorting servers by population 5) Properly refreshing server list. (also thinking about a button for it)

This is meant to be kind of a starter list. The team is off today. The game is stable and the team needs a breather. Tomorrow is a holiday for SOE but we're going to be in here anyways because we want to address these issues. Please add any immediate fix stuff here and we'll try and get it in. Again, your help with self policing threads and getting a positive community going is requested. We're only trying to focus on the stuff we all feel is important. Please help us with focusing on what we need to.

Thanks

Smed

It will be better to watch this game on twitch than will be to actually play it. H1Z1 is missing an it factor. These games, they are touching the surface, but there needs to be more, I don't need a story, we can make our own, but I do need some other incentives other than survival, I think an in game status metric should be in play as well, for example, number of zombies killed, or if we can get a human at populous, number of lives saved, where you help escort stranded human ai to a safe haven, perhaps a server event that is timed with respect to response, where you as the player see commotion off in the distance, rally your allies, fight off hordes of zombies and help an ai family escape, perhaps a small reward for doingso, like ammo, or food, or supplies.... On the flip side, should you fail, you witness the ffamily burn alive and get ate by zombies.... Just some extra incentives.

This game is a lot of fun to play, and it's still unfinished. Looking forward to them filling out those loot tables in all containers (office desks, I'm looking at you).

Side note: Anyone know where I can find fire aside from flares?

There's lighters around as loot. Bow drill can be crafted, and used to start camp fires.

    Yeah. There are multiple options.

There are premade campfires around the world. If you find those you can lit them up using igniters like flare, torche, lighter or bow drill. Flares and ligters are lootables, torches and bow drills you need to discover the recepies first and have materials to craft.

Temporary campfires can also be player crafted. But you need 2 logs which you get by chopping down trees with axes.

You can craft barbaque grill but it needs quite some metal so chances are you won't have that easily.

Haven't tested furnaces and owens with food and water but that could be an option too.

I've also came across burning trash cans which had green border indicating they are interactable but wouldn't open.

I am pretty sure they don't know what to do because with this community they are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Totally disagree.   When is it ever more fun to watch someone play than actually play the game?

If anyone redaing this is prepared to make the argument "for me i play games to have fun bla bla bla real life", then we greatly appreciate your input but this post is not about that. In fact looking at the picture below, "fun" is not listed.

a survival MMO does a great job with the orange step and the red step is where the main "deep endgame" rests. On PvPservers at least. PvE servers focus more on the orange step.

More traditional MMOs, however don't scratch these tiers at all. Which is why there's a "zombie craze" going on. That's what's unique and different here.

Traditional MMOs focus more on the purple step, with occasional green step within the game's clas/guilds/alliances.

Unlike real life, most MMO players don't seek out the blue tier. As such, MMOs don't focus on it. That's where your raid leader or alliance commander is. number of players who embrace an MMO sufficiently to reach this level is very limited, as it is very challenging and rivaling real life in level of reponsibilities. (aka the whole second-job argument. Recruitment officer, anyone?).

Now what does H1Z1 lack? Anything above Red. player villages? Alliances? trading? player wars? Why would we do any of that? Why bond together and become an in-game clan, family, alliance or colony? Why problem-solve? why distribute and rationalize space and ressources for the colony? Why establish ourselves in the server community and reach respect and diplomacy?

TL:DR: Survival MMOs absolutely must reach into green/purple tiers to have long sustainability and replayability. Satisfying 4 steps versus a traditional MMO's 2 steps would make them infinitely succesful. Will they ever do that? Probably not. But the poster who I quoted is searching for an "it" factor and i guarantee it's in that purple step of the pyramid.

    Am I wrong?

What is all this crap? If you enjoy it play it, if you don't, well don't.
