I’m sure you have seen the commercials for Game of War, the hugely successful city-builder by developer Machine Zone. There’s Kate Upton, world-renowned supermodel, asking “Will you be my hero?” You might have seen another commercial that shows her asking “So tell, me, do you want to come and play?” after a relatively impressive battle of armies (without any other woman in sight, by the way.) That one aired during a football game.

"I’m sure you have seen the commercials for Game of War" luckily I don't, at least until now... I agree, it's cheesy, over-acted and even a bit weird at some places, but it's still better than Avril's Black Gold commercial was (true, that one set the bar fairly low, so being better doesn't mean much)
"... finished watching the third and final installment of the Hobbit movies, “It would have been incredible if I were 14 years old.” " I guess it depends. I'm pretty sure my 14 years old self would think the very same about the Hobbit movies as I do now (and to add a comparison to a weaker one like above, I'd rather accept Evangeline Lilly's not-existing elf in the story than watching Pine and Quinto as Kirk and Spock )
Can't comment the game itself, I used to play mostly just TCGs on tablet, and some real (-> turn-based) strategies. And board games. And ScummVM games. And dosbox. Eh, forget what I said...

I cringe every time I see those commercials. So bad.
However, I'm surprised the article doesn't mention how heavily the game is advertised. With that much exposure, it's not a surprise at all that it's beating a sea of games with zero advertising budget.
