[Column] General: How Is Game of War Such a Mobile Hit?

I’m sure you have seen the commercials for Game of War, the hugely successful city-builder by developer Machine Zone. There’s Kate Upton, world-renowned supermodel, asking “Will you be my hero?” You might have seen another commercial that shows her asking “So tell, me, do you want to come and play?” after a relatively impressive battle of armies (without any other woman in sight, by the way.) That one aired during a football game.

I think it's predominantly because of a beautiful woman riding a horse with long blond hair and large real breast. Love those Kate Upton commercials. Imagine Kate riding that horse in front of you, wouldn't you be a little distracted? But nope, not a video gamer, a video gamer just like those warriors don't even think twice, their consumed in war.

It's totally Kate Upton. I'm not gonna lie, If she were part of the UI, standing around in a Chainmail bikini, I'd prolly play it too.

"I’m sure you have seen the commercials for Game of War"  luckily I don't, at least until now... I agree, it's cheesy, over-acted and even a bit weird at some places, but it's still better than Avril's Black Gold commercial was :) (true, that one set the bar fairly low, so being better doesn't mean much)

"... finished watching the third and final installment of the Hobbit movies, “It would have been incredible if I were 14 years old.” " I guess it depends. I'm pretty sure my 14 years old self would think the very same about the Hobbit movies as I do now ;)  (and to add a comparison to a weaker one like above, I'd rather accept Evangeline Lilly's not-existing elf in the story than watching Pine and Quinto as Kirk and Spock image)

Can't comment the game itself, I used to play mostly just TCGs on tablet, and some real (-> turn-based) strategies. And board games. And ScummVM games. And dosbox. Eh, forget what I said... :)

So, the tl:dr version...you know, the version where to the point that I had quit reading, only had talked about tig ol bitties, was designed to do what?

No, the game is successful because, unlike most cash grab games that are P2W, Game of War is simply F2P.  They aren't stingy with the gold (the in-game cash currency), the game is easy and fairly friendly to get into, and it doesn't seem to attract the sort of rectal haberdashers that other F2P (actually P2W) games do.  If you don't have money or don't like to spend money to play a game, you can be both competitive and successful without spending money because you can get a lot of money from free loot crates that are won through the constant contests and tournaments your alliance participates in (just by doing what you always do, in fact), and by getting lucky with the daily spin and free gifts that have a random timer, but can go off twice a day or ten times a day, and drop anything that drops in the game, of your level.  It's a more social PvP game, and the alliances I have been a part of have been open, friendly, and fun.  Its a success because no matter how you play, you always feel like you're doing well.  Its the only game I've played constantly for the last six months, and I'm still not at the end game where there's nothing left to build.
  • Great article.  All the truly great articles get the name of the developer wrong...Machine Head, Machine Zone.

Sorry, never heard of this game until now.  Shameless advert?  Didn't bother reading the article.

Her breasts are as big as my couch.  Never even thought of playing the game, but I don't skip past those commercials.

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

Nope. Never seen or heard of this game prior to this article.  I guess we watch different shows.

I read this article and I just kept thinking... is that Andy Dick talking about games? Sorry :)

I cringe every time I see those commercials. So bad.

However, I'm surprised the article doesn't mention how heavily the game is advertised. With that much exposure, it's not a surprise at all that it's beating a sea of games with zero advertising budget.

Extra points for Beau using the word be_enemy_ ... doesn't matter if it's actually a word or not, it is now!

Cuz Kate Upton is Kate Upton and nerds are nerds...and nerds are sexually frustrated and extremely horny and will apparently follow a beautiful big-boobed woman anywhere.
