It won't be F2P.  It might be B2P with a possibility to buy subtime with currency, like Wildstar, for example. This is not a speculation, just what Blizz said.

The "Veteran" accounts cannot do pretty much anything, but log and maybe talk with people. It was an oversight to let people that never paid log and do some limited stuff while making those that paid for a while unable to even log. The vet mode will apparently have almost the same limitations as Starter edition. You know what that means?

You cannot play expansions. That means you won't even be able to raid, PvP or access your garrison. Might as well not bother logging.

This should put this speculative article to rest. Dream on.

the fanboys dont want it to be f2p but the realists know that it will be f2p.

Those unmature brats (25-30y) eventually will grow up, marry and stop playing.  Life will hit them hard.

WoW is nt living of new players- since they have new standards but from old manicas that refuse to step into the reality, aka real world.

Also lets not forget that Blizzard counts 7mil subs (also subs in asia wich are time 2 play- even if you logged for 2hours) very awkardly just to stay in the middle of spotlight. Asia has around 5 mil f2p and the rest is devided in EU/NA.

If a server can hold 10k ppl its not hard to make 30 servers for 300k players. I Doubt the engine can hold like 100k people. Nooengine and serverinfrastructure can do that- not these days.

yeah while they have so many people they can milk each month its never going to happen maybe if they lost nearly all there subs then yeah they would do it but that is not going to happen any time soon as there are still people stupid enough to pay it each month without question for a sub standard game

Blizzard imo puts  more into their business plans than their games sort of like SOE i guess.

There is ONLY one reason for f2p,it is because with so many games devs know people are not going to sub to 20 different games, impossible.

SO remember that game Blizzard was advertising well before it is ready,i don't even know what genre that is suppose to fall into but not like Blizzard sticks to actual genres in their games.

Anyhow i expect Blizzard wants a large player base in their new game, that won't happen unless either Wow goes cash shop or the new game is free and i doubt the new game is free as they will milk a sub fee for as long as it is accepted.

Point being do not expect any news for a long time, right around when the new game is ready to launch or more likely just before Beta.

With the changes in the 6.1 patch, WoW is effectively F2P. They have removed the last barrier and can now start using this as a marketing term if they wish. They don't have to start marketing this until they feel the need. I would also expect them to raise the level of the F2P game from 20 to 50 when they want to make a marketing push. If you don't believe that this will happen, then take a look at Heroes of the Storm, as this clearly shows where Blizzard is heading.

If is not the question.  Eventually it will be free, but when is the question.  I bet not for  a long time.

First of all, last recount of subs was 10m. Second of all, you can't know how much in China pay to play the game.

But whatever helps you sleep at night.

    i'm expecting the same

EVE, EQ2, Wildstar all offer similar options  (PLEX, Krono, CREDD)

The few times that the ratio of sub vs timecards have been reported it has been that timecards are between 66% and 75% of the total reported subscription base. I believe the last time this was mentioned was when they changed from The9 to NetEase.

No, it's not.  It's asking a legitimate question.  The free trial (starter edition) is vastly different than a f2p title.  For one, it's very restrictive on levels, chat, and other things.  In other f2p titles, these restrictions aren't usually in them, such as in AA, Rift, Tera, etc.

Thank you for proving my point.

I don't care what people think about what the subscription mix is unless I see some real evidence. I have seen the bottom line in their financial statements and the argument that the original poster made that there are only 1-2m subs in NA/EU and that the rest are paying peanuts just don't add up at all. When they had 7m subs and they got a revenue of about a billion from WoW, then it pretty much you know that WoW certainly is doing great in terms of sub numbers and they are not all veiled up by 6m of chinese people who only pay 10 cents a month.

I been playing continously since 2007 and started WOW in 2005. This is the first time I lapsed my account and honestly don't miss anything. My friends list dried up so fast, raiders started not showing up. I hope they do some additions to the game, it needs something more to do besides raiding and garrison baby sitting for me to pay a sub for it. The professions are ruined which is what I used to work on with so much of my time.

GRIND DOES NOT EQUAL MAKING A GAME CHALLENGING!! YES I AM YELLING LOL

    TL:DR

f2p is the biggest industry scam in ever
