Shroud of the Avatar: Early Access on Steam Begins

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Early Access players can now log into Steam to give Shroud of the Avatar a look. The game will be available to players 24/7 and will give the opportunity to see SotA evolve over time.

For most of 2014, the game has evolved with content updates one weekend every month. The latest update, Release 12, will be available to Steam Early Access subscribers today. With this update the game is now available 24/7 (except for planned downtimes). There are currently two ways to access SotA…through Steam Early Access or via Shroud of the Avatar’s regular game client, or both.

“We are excited to be pushing the doors wide-open to Shroud of the Avatar,” said Creative Director Richard Garriott. “When we applied for Early Access for the game, we received our green light in less than three days. In fact Steam players gave the OK with an 86 percent approval rating. What they’ll find is a fantasy RPG that harkens back to my earlier games in the genre, but with modern day technology that combines a single player narrative with an Ultima-like sandbox MMO.”

Still not sure what to think about the game. Played a couple of those pre-alpha weekends and I did kinda like it, yet I didn't like it either. I'm not too sure I'll grab it on Steam now or wait a bit longer...

I have not played it yet but remain interested.   After reading the game is not an open persistent world, Im hesitant about the game.

Was just reading steam reviews and saw this (In yellow)...

IF this is true, that's pretty cool. I'm liking a lot of what I hear about SOA, many aspects I loved about SWG, such as consensual PVP flagging, Guild Warfare, Etc..., plus many OS RPG features.

"Lord British (AKA Richard Gariott) came down with the community and did a tour of the work we had done over the past few days. He stopped by a cafe owned by my wife in game, and even had a beer and watched some PVP duels on the streets of kingsport.

This event was preceeded by him having a player roundtable to everyone present in game and letting people ask him questions directly and address player concerns. This just doesnt happen at this level in games, and this is why I have invested in this game heavily. I want to make sure this game survives and succeeds for years to come."

That's not what I read... where does it say it's not a persistent world?

Not getting the game still, but that is badass and very old school.

Unfortunately I'm not paying a redic amount of money to hang out with virtual Richard garriot.

The game offers open, non-instanced lots ("deeds").... I'm having ArchAge nightmare flashbacks.

I saw this on massively earlier. I looked at it some more on steam and watched some videos. I read a couple threads on PvP aswell. What it sounds like the PvP is "You must flag" type system and a couple pvp zones. As far as the zones I'm thinking more Wintersgrasp than Cyrodiil...

If this is all the PvP is going to be the game will be DOA, atleast for me. Besides that, the game looks cool. I might have bought today if there was a less restrictive pvp system.

I was a backer from the beginning but only really started playing with R12. While obviously very incomplete it just feels soooo good. I need to find some help though as I'm getting my ass kicked at every turn! Kinda refreshing having a game really make me work to figure things out.

Did they mention they delete comments that aren't positive on steam? Because that's exactly what they did to me - delete my comments during the greelight campaign. All I said was for them to consider a different direction for combat.

    "Ultima-like sandbox MMO."? Yeah right.

The only thing this has in common with Ultima is the creator, nothing more. There's no full loot, a weird ass "deck" combat system, a completely illogical skill system- the list goes on. Every good suggestion a player has ever made has been disregarded. And don't think they didn't know about all the pushback when things were announced, because they full well did. Crowdfunding? Heh, More like crowdf*cking.

At first when I went to Steam they wanted $40 for the game and being a backer at the $275 level, I was a bit annoyed.

After going to Portalarium's website and finding out how to link my account with Steam so I can download it, I was less annoyed.

However, it's a good thing I speak Spanish because the login screen and the game key acceptance page are in Spanish. Heh.

I just read that you can buy anything in game with real cash. As in see a vacant house drop w/e the price is in $$. Is this true? Real money economy?

Even if he gave me money I would not want to meet him lol.

His whole debacle with Tabula Rasa is still too fresh on my mind.

Open PvP = you can attack or be attacked anywhere in the game by other Open PvP players.

You can't get any more open than that given PvP is consensual.

That's correct.  By default, the hotbar behaves like all other MMOs.  You have to intentionally switch to the deck system if you prefer something different, more dynamic, something that makes you use your brain rather than spam memorized hotbar keys.

You can buy housing with real cash now before launch, but you can do so later in-game with in-game gold.  And you can buy some non-combat pets, and some pretty clothes and housing decorations for your SimAvatar, if that's what floats your boat.  But similar items like those will also be available for purchase in-game, with in-game gold.  There are thousands of items in the game that can't be purchased in the store (with real cash).  So no, you can't buy everything with cash and it's not a real money based economy.

I thin kit's obvious Bc wants to force his play style on everyone and dictate the way you play the game.  He'll never understand that Non-Consensual PvP is a bad thing in an MMO.

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

I think it's just no fun for some when those they fight will most likely be able to defend themselves, because those who can't can't be attacked.

Non consensual PVP is really a pain in the arse if you are interested in exploration and PVE. This was one of the main reasons I left early UO and DarkFall.

I might be tempted to give this a shot as it appears to have all the allure of UO without the annoying kiddies that take a pop at you every five minutes (assuming you get the PVP settings right)

I used to visit this site a lot however in recent years it has become the home of negative forum posts, illogical opinions and tantrums so I visit less often.

    Played or Beta'd: UO / DAOC / Horizons / EQ2 / DDO / EVE / Archlord / PirateKingsOnline / Tabula Rasa / LOTRO / AOC / Champions / Darkfall / Mortal Online / DCUO / Rift / STO / SWTOR / TSW
