Not saying this game is perfect, couldn't even tell you because I'm too broke to buy it atm.
But its nice seeing something that can't quite as easily be called another theme park/sandbox/sand park.
Just taking a quick peak at the forum I can see this game isn't for everyone, but I love sci-fi and I would like to see more games that don't involve just mashing 1-9 keys = fantasy combat.
Just saying its a nice change and plan on saving up to buy it .

Being one of big fans of original Elite. (I still consider 1984 Elite being best game ever made)
I can tell you that not all is roses with E:D
The game was clearly set up as MMO, a sandbox MMO equivalent to EVE but with awesome twitch combat.
But for some reason Frontier (and big number core fanboys) hate multiplayer, and MMO is curse word for them. EVE is the plague of the world according to them. And would simply want for the game to be single player.
This have caused few insane decisions:
1. There is no standard MMO communication or social tools.
There are no chat channels , no guilds , no mail, no trade, no groups ... nothing.
2. Single player and multiplayer are not separated.
You can basically play as trader , make money safely from PVP and than come online just when you have no risk and with some insane ship you earned by safely trading.
As it seems right now. This decision is final. And if they plan to change it they are very quiet about it.
But unless they do change it. Elite has no future.
Without player interaction and politics , there is very limited game there that gets boring very very fast.
I enjoy Elite a lot, the flight and combat is superb, the galaxy feels fantastic to fly around in. It's a very easy game to lose yourself in.
What we have now is a really good base for the game. I like that they're taking submissions for player run events to be shown via GalNet, patch 1.1 - http://www.pcgamer.com/elite-dangerous-patch-11-preview-community-goals-revealed/ shows some of the more traditional GM style events they'll be adding and then over the next few months new ships, balancing, mission overhaul, new stuff added to the galaxy should see the game become more fleshed out.
OP, when your funds allow .. buy it. Its a good game. If it takes a bit longer before you can buy it ... even better. At the moment it is a fun, but basic game that will profit from more polishing and adding new elements in the near future that clearly could not make the cut in time for an X-Mas release.
Personally I fly with a Docking Computer. Not because its necessary - in fact the slot could be used better for other modules. But for me personally - having played the original in 1984 - its simply "Elite Incarnate" when you are listening to "The Blue Danube" while you are cruising to your landing pad in a Coriolis station.
Have fun
LOL, this is why I use docking computer as well
Considering the lack of features and placeholder content, I find myself playing Elite: Dangerous a lot. Blasting ships out of space is quite satisfying, as is turning home to dock and cashing in a big fat bounty reward.
Man! I use to play this on my C64 and until you guys brought it up, I didn't even put 2 and 2 together. I found the Commodore version more interesting than the mmo I'm afraid.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
This game is quite good for there being....about 4 real activities to do in the game.
It just worries me that Frontier Developments does not see how valuable multiplayer is to the success to this game.
Yea Yea..."Wings" is supposed to be its savior...but..i Just have this feeling that its not going to be enough at this point.
The fact that they allow the single and multiplayer games exist on the same server and offer no bonus to those who play in Open play just shows me that they really have no clue what they are doing in terms of incentive to play online and interact, or be subject to interact with other players. If they cant see that, then any hope for this game being the awesome space mmo that it SHOULD be are already lost.
Ill still be playing this until something else comes along but Its hard not to dream of what this game could and should have been.
No, the game is actually a fine example of "over-hyped" if there ever was one.
One of the most common phrases you'll read about E:D is that it's "an excellent frame/foundation/skeleton to further expand on". What that actually means in plain English is that much of what was promised in the design documents was not delivered.
It's a classic example of "the game has great potential". I've often heard that said about certain MMO's over the last decade, but sadly none of them ever realised that potential.
E:D is in an odd place. Because all the actual game play takes place either on your client (solo mode) or in P2P sessions (multiplayer), many standard MMO features like ingame chat, grouping, AH, etc. will never be implemented fully. There is no central server that runs the "game world", the central servers only keep certain types of data (like character stats, trade prices for the NPC market, faction influence, etc.).
Elite is definitely a gem of game.
Sure it has it's flaws, and i would have done the whole "solo/multiplayer" thing differently, but it's still an awesome, awesome game. i have an Oculus Rift and this quickly become the single best experience in the last 5 years. there is no space game out right now that even compares.
I bought it a week or so ago and I am really enjoying it however even in open play it feels lonely.
I played EvE a bit and despite being a game about floating about in space I didn't feel as disconnected from everyone else as I do in Elite.
It is a great game and well worth the £40 I have paid but will I play it far beyond the next few weeks? Probably not unless there are more social features added. Just having system or station wide chat and guilds would make it seem infinitely better.
Then the upcoming Update 1.2 "Wings" (around March) will be the right thing for you.
The Community Events in Update 1.1 might help you to feel less lonely, as you can expect commanders to gather in the mentioned systems to accomplish a common goal. You then can communicate with those commanders.
Have fun
